Book excerpt: Opposum Lake Dam is a zoned rolled earthfill dam with an impervious core. Construction was completed in June 1961. It was inspected 5 April 1978. This dam does not have the capacity to pass the recommended spillway design flood of one-half the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping. The spillway capacity is not considered seriously inadequate, as the project will pass the 100-year flood. A serious and persistent problem exists in a constant seepage passage over most of the length of the downstream slope of the dam. It is recommended that the owner maintain continual surveillance of the dam until the embankment has been rehabilitated to correct the serious seepage problem.

Book excerpt: Pursuant to Public Law 92-367, Phase I Inspection Reports are prepared under guidance contained in the recommended guidelines for safety inspection of dams, published by the Office of Chief of Engineers, Washington, D.C. 20314. The purpose of a Phase I investigation is to identify expeditiously those dams which may pose hazards to human life or property. The assessment of the general conditions of the dam is based upon available data and visual inspections. Detailed investigation and analyses involving topographic mapping, subsurface investigations, testing, and detailed computational evaluations are beyond the scope of a Phase I investigation; however, the investigation is intended to identify any need for such studies. Based upon the field conditions at the time of the field inspection and all available engineering data, the Phase I report addresses the hydraulic, hydrologic, geologic, geotechnic, and structural aspects of the dam. The engineering techniques employed give a reasonably accurate assessment of the conditions of the dam. It should be realized that certain engineering aspects cannot be fully analyzed during a Phase I inspection. Assessment and remedial measures in the report include the requirements of additional indepth study when necessary. Phase I reports include project information of the dam and appurtenances, all existing engineering data, operational procedures, hydraulic/hydrologic data of the watershed, dam stability, visual inspection report and an assessment including required remedial measures.

Book excerpt: The Lakeside Dam is an earthen embankment about 428 feet long and 14.1 feet high. The dam is owned and maintained by the DANAC Real Estate Investment Corporation and the Metropolitan Federal Service Corporation. The dam is classified as a small dam with a significant hazard classification. The spillway is a riprap lined earthen side channel spillway located at the right abutment. This reservoir is used for recreation. Based on criteria established by the department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the 100 Year Flood. The spillway will satisfactorily pass the 100 Year Flood and will also pass 100 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam. Therefore the spillway is adjudged as adequate. The visual inspection revealed no problems or remedial measures in need of immediate attention. There is no regular maintenance operation program or warning system, and it is recommended that a maintenance program and a warning system be established. The maintenance items listed in Section 7.2 should be accomplished as a part of the regular maintenance program within the next 12 months. (Author).

Phase I Inspection Report written by Boris O. Taran and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper and Lower Apple Mountain Dams are two impounding structures with the tailwater of the Upper Dam being the reservoir water surface of the Lower Dam. The Upper Dam is an earthen embankment about 351 feet long and 34.5 feet high, while the Lower Lake Dam is an earthen embankment about 377 feet long and 32.9 feet high. The dams are classified as small dams with a hazard classification of significant based on location. The emergency spillway for each dam is an earthen channel located at the left abutment of each dam. Based on criteria established by the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the 100-year flood for each. The emergency spillway of the upper dam will pass 6 percent of the PMF and 100 percent of the SDF without overtopping while the lower dam will pass 4 percent of the PMF and 100 percent of the SDF without overtopping. Therefore, the spillway of each dam is adjudged as adequate.

Phase I Inspection Report written by James A. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unimin Tailings Dam is an earthfill embankment approximately 84.9 feet high and 574 feet long. The principal spillway is a 30-inch bituminous coated corrugated metal pipe riser and the emergency spillway is natural, topographic saddle on the right side of the reservoir. The dam is on Mine Spring Run approximately 1.2 miles south of Gore, Virginia, and is used for waste tailing storage by the owner, Unimin Corporation. Unimin Tailings Dam is an 'intermediate' size- 'high' hazard structure as defined by the Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams. Adequate stability analyses were available for review during these investigations which evaluated the factors of safety against complete and partial failures of both the upstream and downstream embankments. All of the analyses performed indicated acceptable factors of safety against failure. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for initial review of spillway adequacy, the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) was selected as the spillway design flood (SDF). The spillways are capable of passing 100 percent of the PMF without overtopping the crest of the dam, therefore, they are adjudged as adequate.

Martin and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower Wallace Dam is a homogeneous earthfill structure about 450 ft long and 25 ft high. The principal spillway consists of a 15 inch diameter corrugated metal pipe (CMP) riser and outlet pipe which extends through the structure. A secondary spillway consists of a CMP and a square inlet box which is located at the right abutment approximately 0.5 feet above the crest of the riser inlet. A 43 ft wide emergency spillway is located at the left abutment approximately 4 ft above normal pool. The dam is located on Poor Creek approximately one mile east of Greenville, Virginia. Based on criteria established by the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the appropriate Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the 1/2 PMF. The spillway will pass 15 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) or 30 percent of the SDF. During the SDF the Dam will be overtopped by a maximum of 1.7 ft for a period of 5 hours at a maximum velocity of 5.8 fps. The spillway is judged inadequate but not seriously inadequate.
