Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in good condition. The size classification is considered to be high. In accordance with recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for this facility ranges between the 1/2 PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Due to the high potential for damage to downstream structures and possibly loss of life, the SDF is considered to be the PMF. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis is indicate the facility will pass and/or store approximately 75 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. As a result, the spillway is deemed inadequate, but not seriously inadequate.

Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is small and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility ranges between the 1/2 PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Due to the high potential for damage to downstream structures and possibly loss of life, the SDF is considered to be the PMF. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store approximately 92 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. Based on screening criteria contained in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. Deficiencies noted by the inspection team included a seepage condition along a portion of the downstream embankment toe approximately 160 feet to the right of the left abutment hillside and a minor vertical crack in the concrete spillway overflow wall.

Phase I Inspection Report written by John A. Dziubek and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parker Dam is classified as a 'Significant' hazard - 'Small' size dam. The dam and reservoir, owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Resources, are used for recreational purposes. The dam and appurtenant structures were found to be in good overall condition at the time of the inspection. A spillway design flood (SDF) in the range of the 100-year flood to the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (1/2 PMF) is required for Parker Dam. Since the dam is in the middle of the 'Small' size category according to storage capacity, the 1/2 PMF was selected as the SDF. Hydrologic/hydraulic evaluations, performed in accordance with procedures established by the Baltimore District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, revealed that the available spillway capacity is much greater than the maximum flow expected during the SDF. Therefore, the dam will not be overtopped during the SDF and the spillways are considered to be 'adequate'.

Book excerpt: Examination of available documents and visual inspections of the dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies that need to be evaluated and remedied. The spillway is adjudged to be seriously inadequate and the dam is assessed as unsafe, nonemergency. It should be noted that Eaton Brook Reservoir Dam is located approximately 2.2 miles upstream of Clayton's Dam on Eaton Brook. Its spillway has also been adjudged to be seriously inadequate and the dam assessed as unsafe, nonemergency. Due to the appreciable size of Eaton Reservoir, the breaching of that dam would undoubtedly have a serious effect on Clayton's Dam. Similarly, the failure of either of these dams would have a serious effect on two small dams also on Eaton Brook, located 0.5 miles and 1.7 miles downstream of Clayton's Dam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brush Valley Dam is an earth embankment with a maximum height of about 21 feet and an approximate length of 920 feet. The top of the dam (Elev. 1128.0) is 16 feet wide. The upstream slope is 2.5 horizontal to 1 vertical(2.5H:1V), and is protected with riprap. The downstream slope is 2 horizontal to 1 vertical (2H:1V) and is surfaced with grass. An ungated overflow spillway is located about 200 feet from the right abutment. The crest of the spillway (Elev. 1123.0) is about 52 feet long. The control section is concrete, while the downstream slope is surfaced with riprap set in motar. A timber decked steel beam bridge supported by 3 intermediate piers, provides access across the spillway. A 16-inch diameter cast iron pipe is located at the base of spillway section. The upstream end of the pipe is joined to a submerged intake structure. This structure is fitted with screens to prevent debris from entering the pipe. Pipe discharge is controlled by a valve located at the downstream end of the pipe in the center of the spillway channel. The valve is operated manually and diverts flow either to a pumphouse or to the downstream channel. Based on a review of the available drawings, no upstream control valve is positioned on the pipe. The pumphouse is located at the toe of the embankment about 400 feet from the left abutment. Water is pumped from Brush Valley reservoir to a distributing reservoir about 8,000 feet to southeast. The distributing reservoir is about 600 feet above the level of Brush Valley reservoir. (Author).

Phase I Inspection Report written by Frederick Futchko and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam consists of a zoned, earthfill embankment that is 590 feet long and 52 feet high at its maximum section. The main spillway is a drop spillway located near the right abutment of the dam. It consists of a concrete riser connected to a 30-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe under the embankment. The auxiliary spillway is an excavated channel along the left abutment of the dam. It is a grass-linked excavation in earth. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, PA-467 Dam is judged to be in good condition. The existing spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood(PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. There is a slope stability analysis for the embankment, and it indicates that the embankment has adequate factors of safety. There is no evidence of significant problems threatening the embankment.

Phase I Inspection Report written by George Koch and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual inspection of this dam and engineering analyses revealed that the poor condition of the dam creates a hazard to human life and property. As a result of these determinations, the dam has been assessed as unsafe, non-emergency. One of the spillway sections has failed completely, creating a large void in the dam. The other spillway channel is in poor condition, having cracks in the concrete and several small voids. The earth fill upstream of the dam completely blocks the failed spillway section and partially blocks the other section. Due to the serious nature of the deficiencies, it is recommended that within 30 days of the notification to the owner that the dam has been assessed as unsafe, repair work on the structural deficiencies should be commenced. These repairs should be completed within 3 months. Within 3 months of the notification of the owner, a detailed hydrologic/hydraulic investigation should be commenced. This investigation should accurately define the site specific characteristics of the watershed and determine appropriate mitigating measures to be taken in response to the seriously inadequate spillway capacity. These measures should be completed within 1 year of the date of notification.
