Phase I Inspection Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of Williamsburg Station Dam is based upon visual observations made at the time of inspection, review of available records and data, hydraulic and hydrologic computations and past operational performance. The inspection and review of data at the Williamsburg Station Dam did not reveal any problems which require emergency action. The dam appears to be in fair condition. The Williamsburg Station Dam is a high hazard-intermediate size dam. The Spillway Design Flood for a dam of this size and classification is the PMF. The spillway and reservoir are capable of controlling approximately 18% of the PMF. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed inadequate. This dam is a run-of-river type dam with inflow discharging over the spillway. With high discharges the tailwater builds up rapidly causing the weir to become submerged. Downstream flooding normally will result because of runoff in excess of river capacity rather than a result of dam failure. Dam failure at low river flows could result in the loss of more than a few lives in the town of Williamsburg and downstream flooding due primarily to the failure.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the inspection is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life or property. The dam consists of a homogeneous earthfill embankment that is 680 feet long and 64 feet high at its maximum section. The main spillway is a drop spillway located near the left abutment of the dam. It consists of a concrete riser connected to a 30-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe under the embankment. One 12-inch by 21-inch uncontrolled orifice is located in the upstream face of the concrete riser with the orifice crest at El. 1227.0, which is 27 feet below design elevation of the top of the dam. The auxiliary spillway is an excavated channel at the right abutment of the dam. It is grass-lined except for portions that were excavated into rock. The hazard classification is high hazard. Downstream conditions indicate that a high hazard classification is warranted for PA-468 Dam. It is owned by the Susquehanna County Commissioners. Its purpose is for flood control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Walter Dam is located on Spring Run, approximately one mile upstream of its confluence with Meshoppen Creek in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The condition of Lake Walter Dam is considered to be good. The only significant condition noted which requires further attention is the lack of erosion protection in the emergency spillway discharge channel. The swampy condition at the toe of the dam is not considered to be significant at this time; however, the condition should be monitored to document if seepage is developing.

Book excerpt: Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations, and past operational performance, and according to criteria established for these studies, No. 5 Dam is judged to be unsafe, nonemergency, because the spillway capacity is rated as seriously inadequate. The spillway can pass 29 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the dam. Failure of the dam would cause an increase hazard to loss of life downstream. As a whole, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. The spillway gravity weir does not have any significant deviations from the guidelines for stability, since the toe pressure is well below the allowable. There is no evidence of instability on the embankment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshwood Dam is two homogeneous earthfill embankments with masonry core-walls. The dam was built in a natural saddle. The embankments impound water within the saddle. The dam has a main spillway and an auxiliary spillway. The main spillway is located at the right abutment of the South Embankment. It has a sharp-crested concrete weir with a crest length of 100 feet. The auxiliary spillway is a canal about 300 feet left of the South Embankment. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, Marshwood Dam is judged to be in fair condition. The spillway can pass 65 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as inadequate. This rating is dependent on implementation of some of the recommendations herein. If the low areas on the embankments were raised 0.6 foot to the design elevation, the spillway can pass 80 percent of the PMF. The spillway capacity would still be rated as inadequate.

Book excerpt: Pottsgrove Dam is a 37-foot high earth embankment approximately 900 feet long. The embankment is comprised of three sections of which the center section is about 560 feet long. The left and right sections are approximately 90 and 250 feet long (including spillway), respectively, and each form an angle of about 60 degrees with the center section. The facility is served by a concrete and masonry chute channel spillway with an uncontrolled concrete, ogee-shaped weir located within the right embankment section. The spillway has a crest length of 64 feet and is 4.6 feet deep (below wingwall level). In addition, the facility is equipped with a 16-inch diameter cast iron pipe (C.I.P.) blowoff line, and 10- and 12-inch diameter C.I.P. supply lines controlled by gate valves housed within a structure located at the downstream toe of the embankment. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, PA-467 Dam is judged to be in good condition. The existing spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood(PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. There is a slope stability analysis for the embankment, and it indicates that the embankment has adequate factors of safety. There is no evidence of significant problems threatening the embankment.

Book excerpt: Maple Lake Dam is an earthfill embankment 14.4 feet high and 283 feet long, excluding spillway. The emergency spillway is located at the left abutment, consisting of an earth channel having a trapezoidal cross section. The bottom width of the spillway at the reservoir outlet is 56 feet. A service spillway, consisting of a 12-inch riser pipe and an 8-inch diameter outlet pipe, is located approximately 100 feet from the right abutment. The outlet works was reported to consist of an 8-inch diameter asbestos cement pipe, extending upstream of the riser pipe to the reservoir and terminating with two sections of an 8-inch diameter vitrified clay pipe, having a concrete plug at the inlet. Based on visual inspection, the Maple Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. Under the present conditions, the spillway will pass approximately 37 percent of the PMF. Should the top of the dam be restored to its design elevation, the spillway could pass the SDF without overtopping the dam.
