This book was released on 1980 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Sheridan Dam is a rubble masonary and concrete gravity dam. The dam is 89 feet long and 9 feet high. The intercore of the dam consists of the original rubble masonry construction. The concrete portion of the dam was added during the 1966 modifications. The dam consists of an overflow and a non-overflow section. The overflow section of the dam serves as the normal spillway for the reservoir. The crest length of the spillway is 40 feet. A reservoir drain valve is located on the upstream end of the right non-overflow section. In general, the dam appears to be in good condition. The spillway design flood for this dam is the 1/2 PMF to PMF. The spillway design flood was selected as the PMF (probable maximum flood) based on the downstream potential for loss of life and property damage. The spillway is capable of controlling only 2% of the PMF. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed inadequate. Since Lake Sheridan Dam's non-overflow section consists of a concrete section over rubble masonry, the non-overflow section should be capable of safely controlling a partial overflow. However, the amount of overtopping that can be safely controlled is unknown. In this case the amount of overtopping is directly related to the structural stability of the dam. No visible seepage or other obvious deficiencies affecting the stability of the dam were noted during the inspection.

Book excerpt: The Saddle Lake Dam is a homogeneous earthfill structure with an earthfilled cutoff trench at the center of the embankment foundation. The top of the dam embankment is 24 feet above the streambed elevation. The main embankment is 350 feet in length to where it meets a natural high knoll at its right abutment. The knoll is about 100 feet across beyond which a second embankment section has been constructed extending approximately another 400 feet to the right where it abuts the natural ground surface. An uncontrolled concrete triangular weir spillway is located at the left abutment of the main embankment. The approach to the spillway is through a 45 foot wide approach channel from the left side of the reservoir. This channel is a 90 deg curved section about 200 feet in length. The spillway outlet channel has a concrete slab and 2H to 1V sloped concrete side walls and extends 57 feet downstream from the crest of the weir. Beyond this point, the channel is paved with riprap including a stilling basin about 200 feet further downstream.

Book excerpt: Stevens Lake Dam is an earthfill dam, 99 feet long and 9 feet high. The crest width of the dam is 12 feet. The upstream slope is 3H:1V and protected with handplaced riprap. The downstream slope is 2.5H:1V and is grass covered. The spillway is located at the center of the embankment and consists of a concrete structure with a modified sharp crested weir. The spillway is equipped with wooden stop logs located along the right spillway wingwall. The 5 feet long wooden stop logs are used to regulate the level of the reservoir pool below the spillway weir elevation. The length of the weir is 52 feet long. The inspection and review of data of Stevens Lake Dam did not reveal any problems which require emergency action. The dam appears to be in good condition and adequately maintained. The spillway and reservior are capable of controlling approximately 53% of the PMF. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed inadequate.

Book excerpt: Perrins Marsh Dam, which is also known as Brown's Pond Dam or Schoonover's Lake, consists of a six-foot-high stone wall, backed by earth fill on the upstream side. In its present configuration, the dam appears to be about 50 to 60 feet long, with a 28-foot-long segment forming the overflow section of the dam. The overflow section is capped with a six-foot-wide concrete slab which appears to be about one foot thick. The earth fills flanking the overflow section gradually merge into the natural abutments with no discernible embankment-abutment junction. The dam does not appear to have any low level outlet facilities. It appears that this dam was constructed at the outlet of a natural lake to raise the lake level. The dam is classified to be in the significant hazard category. Below the dam, Whitelock Creek flows about 150 feet, falls over a stone wall, then flows under a bridge. A house located downstream of the bridge is considered to be in the floodplain of the creek. The stream flows adjacent to a rural residential area for approximately one mile, and then discharges to an essentially uninhabited valley. It is estimated that a failure of this dam would likely cause damage to the downstream bridges and property in the rural residential area. Loss of a few lives is considered possible.

Book excerpt: Maple Lake Dam is an earthfill embankment 14.4 feet high and 283 feet long, excluding spillway. The emergency spillway is located at the left abutment, consisting of an earth channel having a trapezoidal cross section. The bottom width of the spillway at the reservoir outlet is 56 feet. A service spillway, consisting of a 12-inch riser pipe and an 8-inch diameter outlet pipe, is located approximately 100 feet from the right abutment. The outlet works was reported to consist of an 8-inch diameter asbestos cement pipe, extending upstream of the riser pipe to the reservoir and terminating with two sections of an 8-inch diameter vitrified clay pipe, having a concrete plug at the inlet. Based on visual inspection, the Maple Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. Under the present conditions, the spillway will pass approximately 37 percent of the PMF. Should the top of the dam be restored to its design elevation, the spillway could pass the SDF without overtopping the dam.

Book excerpt: Lake Swiftwater Dam is a 31 + or - foot high zoned embankment containing an impervious core founded in hardpan. The embankment has upstream and downstream slopes of 2.5H:1V and a crest width of 10 feet. When the old spillway was relocated to the right abutment, the embankment section was reconstructed and is a homogeneous embankment with an eight foot wide cutoff trench founded on impervious materials. The upstream and downstream slopes were both constructed at 2.5H:1V with a 10 foot crest width. The upstream slope of the whole embankment is protected with riprap, minimum thickness being 18 inches on the new embankment and 12 inches on the old embankment. The embankment impounds a 21-acre reservoir. The embankment also contains a gatehouse tower located near the crest of the dam approximately midway along the length of the embankment. The gatehouse tower contains a steel sluice gate manufactured by the Caldwell-Wilcox Company. Documentation in the files indicates that the intake pipe is 42 inches in diameter, located at the base of the embankment, and encased in concrete with anti-seep collars.

Book excerpt: The assessment of Pioneer Lake Dam is based upon visual observations made at the time of inspection, review of available records and data, hydraulic and hydrologic computations and past operational performance. The dam and appurtenant structures appear to be in fair condition. No major erosion was observed on the embankment crest. An erosion area was observed at the outlet for the 12 in. diameter cast iron pipe. Erosion at the outlet of the 12 in. diameter pipe exists on the downstream slope of the dam near the toe. Seepage 100 ft. right of the spillway channel was measured to be approximately 50 gallons per minute. A 30 in. corrugated metal pipe exists beneath the roadway near the outlet for the emergency spillway. It was observed during the inspection that the pipe is collapsing near the center of the pipe. Trees were observed growing along the upstream edge of the crest, and dense vegetation was observed along the entire length of the downstream slope. The Pioneer Lake Dam is a high hazard-small size dam. The recommended spillway design flood (SDF) for a dam of this size and classification is in the range of the 1/2 PMF to PMF. Due to the downstream potential for loss of life and property damage, the spillway design flood has been selected as the PMF. The spillway and reservoir are capable of controlling approximately 11% of the PMF without overtopping the embankment. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed seriously inadequate. Pioneer Lake Dam is classified as unsafe, non-emergency.

Phase I Inspection Report written by D'APPOLONIA CONSULTING ENGINEERS INC PITTSBURGH PA. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Sharpe's Pond Dam is considered to be fair. No conditions were noted that would significantly affect the structural stability of the dam. The formal spillway facility, which consists of a three-foot-diameter drop inlet pipe, is considered to be vulnerable to blockage by debris during a flood and is, therefore, considered inadequate. Although a low area exists over the left abutment which may function as an emergency spillway, a need exists for the installation of a formal emergency spillway facility. Flood discharge capacity of the dam, including the flow over the left abutment, was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and was found to be approximately 10 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the low spot on the main embankment. This capacity is less than the recommended one-half of the PMF, according to the size and hazard classification for the dam. Although the spillway capacity is less than 50 percent of the PMF, overtopping of the dam is not considered to constitute a major breach potential. Therefore, the spillway is classified to be inadequate, but not seriously inadequate.

Book excerpt: Shickshinny Lake Dam is an earthfill dam, 365 feet long and 33 feet high. The crest width of the dam is 17 feet. The upstream slope is 3H:1V and the downstream slope is 2.5H:1V. Both the upstream and downstream slopes are grass covered. Some riprap exists on the upstream slope. The principal spillway consists of a reinforced concrete riser and a 30 inch reinforced concrete pipe which passes under the dam. The top of the riser unit is provided with an anti-vortex device. A gate valve is provided on an inlet pipe just inside the riser unit. Based on our hydraulic and hydrologic analysis it was determined that the spillway and reservoir are capable of controlling approximately 52% of the PMF. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed inadequate. No major deficiencies were observed during the inspection. Seepage was noted at the left abutment contact and did not appear to be excessive. Erosion was observed at the outlet structure for the spillway and drainline.

Book excerpt: Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, and according to criteria established for these studies, Winola Mill Pond Dam is judged to be unsafe, nonemergency, because the spillway capacity is rated as seriously inadequate. The existing walls of the main spillway will overtop at about 6 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood(PMF). Overtopping of the walls will cause erosion of the dry masonry section of the dam. It is estimated that the 15 percent PMF would cause sufficient erosion to cause the dam to fail. The initial surge from the failure of the dam would increase the hazard to loss of life downstream. As a whole, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. Cracks have developed in the concrete liner wall on the upstream face of the dry masonry. Excessive leakage and a hole in the upstream earthfill had previously developed and the repairs made to the structure do not eliminate the possibility of these conditions reoccurring. Although a preliminary stability analysis indicates no apparent need for immediate concern, the theoretical stability of Winola Mill Pond Dam is unknown because the foundation conditions are unknown.
