This book was released on 1980 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Jean Dam is a zoned earth embankment approximately 26 feet high and 780 long, including spillway. The emergency spillway is an uncontrolled, rectangular, concrete and rock cut chute channel located at the right abutment. The crest of the spillway is 20 feet long and is spanned by a concrete bridge which supports a portion of the bituminous roadway that covers the embankment crest. Drawdown capability is provided by means of a 30-inch diameter cast iron blowoff pipe controlled at the inlet by a 30-inch diameter sluice gate. The facility consists of a main dam (Lake Jean Dam) and two appurtenant saddle dams (east and west dikes). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store about 73 percent of the PMF prior to overtopping the east dike. Thus, based on the screening criteria contained in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. Should the saddle dams be regraded to their design elevation, the spillway would then pass floods in excess of the PMF and would be considered adequate.

Book excerpt: Harris Pond Dam is a combination earth, concrete and masonry structure approximately 10 feet high and 135 feet long, including spillway. It is located on Roaring Brook Creek in Ross Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The overall appearance of the facility suggests it to be in good condition. The only deficiency noted by the inspection team that requires immediate remedial attention was the areas exhibiting concrete deterioration. Flashboards (reportedly removed during significant storms) were observed in-place across the service spillway. Although generally considered undesirable, they appear, in this particular case, to be of little significance relative to the safe operation of Harris Pond Dam.

Book excerpt: Hathaway Pond Dam is located in Ararat Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The reservoir was originally created to provide water for power purposes. The reservoir slopes are moderate with a good cover of vegetation. There are three ponds upstream from Hathaway Pond Dam on two tributary streams. The western stream contains Romobe Lake (PennDER I.D. No. 58-10) which is 1750 feet upstream from Hathaway Pond Dam. The eastern tributary contains Ball Lake and an unnamed smaller pond in series. Ball Lake is 2450 feet upstream and will retain considerable storage while the smaller unnamed pond was considered to have no effect on Hathaway Pond Dam. Two homes, a trailer, and township road are located 1800 feet downstream from Hathaway Pond Dam. These could suffer economic damage in the event of a dam failure.

Book excerpt: Maple Lake Dam is an earthfill embankment 14.4 feet high and 283 feet long, excluding spillway. The emergency spillway is located at the left abutment, consisting of an earth channel having a trapezoidal cross section. The bottom width of the spillway at the reservoir outlet is 56 feet. A service spillway, consisting of a 12-inch riser pipe and an 8-inch diameter outlet pipe, is located approximately 100 feet from the right abutment. The outlet works was reported to consist of an 8-inch diameter asbestos cement pipe, extending upstream of the riser pipe to the reservoir and terminating with two sections of an 8-inch diameter vitrified clay pipe, having a concrete plug at the inlet. Based on visual inspection, the Maple Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. Under the present conditions, the spillway will pass approximately 37 percent of the PMF. Should the top of the dam be restored to its design elevation, the spillway could pass the SDF without overtopping the dam.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this inspection is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life and property. The overall appearance and general condition of the structure is fair. The left spillway wall has collapsed, and trees and brush are growing on the downstream face. The maintenance of the dam is apparently limited to keeping the crest clear for fishing and hiking. The condition of the outlet works should be determined and repairs made as required so that the lake can be drawn down if necessary. The spillway will not function as designed during a major flood event due to the obstruction caused by the collapsed wall. In addition, the collapse of this wall will permit erosion of the embankment by spillway flows. All trees should be removed from the dam.

Book excerpt: Dam G is a homogeneous earthfill embankment with a concrete core-wall. The embankment is 490 feet long and 19 feet high at maximum section. There are two outlet works at the dam. The first outlet works, which is near the right end of the embankment, consists of a concrete intake structure, two 24-inch diameter cast-iron pipes, and a valve house. This outlet works is connected to the water supply system. The second outlet works, which is near the left end of the dam, is similar to the first except it consists of a single 24-inch diameter pipe. The second outlet works provides the emergency drawdown capability. The concrete chute spillway is at the left abutment of the dam. Its crest is 3.0 feet below the design elevation of the top of the dam and is 75 feet long. The approach channel is short and concrete paved. The exit channel is a continuation of the chute. A bridge extends across the spillway crest. It is supported by two piers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bear Creek Lake Dam is a rock filled timber crib structure approximately 325 feet long and 17 feet high at its maximum section. An ungated drop spillway with an 158-foot long sharp crested weir is located approximately 60 feet from the right abutment (looking downstream). The 80 acre lake is used for recreation by the residents of Bear Creek Village. It is unknown when the dam was constructed. In the state inspection report of April, 1915 it is stated, 'This dam was constructed a great many years ago, but it has been repaired from time to time, so that more than likely none of the original structure is now in existence.' Examination of the results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the drop spillway is capable of passing 11 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the embankment. Failure of the dam would significantly increase the hazard to loss of life downstream of the dam. Therefore, the capacity of the drop spillway is classified as 'seriously inadequate.' The dam is considered to be 'unsafe (non-emergency).'

Phase I Inspection Report written by R. Jeffrey Kimball and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Louise Dam appears to be in poor condition. Lake Louise Dam is a high hazard small size dam. The spillway design flood is in the range of 1/2 PMF to PMF. The spillway design flood was selected to be the PMF (probable maximum flood) based on downstream potential for loss of life and property damage. The spillway is capable of controlling approximately 45% of the PMF. The dam breach analysis indicated that a significant increase in the downstream potential for loss of life and property damage exists should the dam fail. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed seriously inadequate. The spillway exit and entrance channels are in poor condition. The heavy vegetation creates the potential for water infiltration and made visual inspection of the embankment difficult. Lake Louise Dam is classified as an unsafe non-emergency dam.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this inspection is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life and property. The Dam's location is Bucks Township, Luzerne County. The overall appearance and general condition of the dam and appurtenances are fair. The spillway crest has been raised and the dam crest is two feet below design elevation. These and other noteworthy deficiencies noted. The reservoir pool was 3.5 feet below spillway crest (corewall) on the day of the initial inspection, 22 October 1980. The lake was purposely drawn down so that maintenance of the dam could be performed. On the date of the review inspection, the reservoir level was one foot above the spillway crest (corewall).

Phase I Inspection Report written by GAI CONSULTANTS INC MONROEVILLE PA. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in fair condition. The size classification of the facility is small and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility ranges between the 1/2-PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Due to the high potential for damage to downstream structures and possible loss of life that could be associated with a sudden breach of the embankment, the SDF is considered to be the PMF. Results of hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the spillway for Wadham Creek Dam is capable of passing and/or storing the PMF. Consequently, the spillway is considered adequate.

Book excerpt: Lake Walter Dam is located on Spring Run, approximately one mile upstream of its confluence with Meshoppen Creek in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The condition of Lake Walter Dam is considered to be good. The only significant condition noted which requires further attention is the lack of erosion protection in the emergency spillway discharge channel. The swampy condition at the toe of the dam is not considered to be significant at this time; however, the condition should be monitored to document if seepage is developing.

Book excerpt: Based on available records, visual inspection, calculations, past operational performance, and consideration of the existing normal pool level, Wanamie Dam is judged to be in fair condition. The existing spillway is a gorge that was eroded when the spillway washed out in 1955. The spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF), which is the Spillway Design Flood (SDF), with 7.9 feet of freeboard. Based on the size and hazard classification of the dam, the recommended SDF varies between the 1/2 PMF and the PMF. The selected SDF is based on the criteria and the downstream conditions. The pool level at maximum PMF level is 5.2 feet below the normal pool level that existed prior to 1955. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. This rating is dependent upon removal of the remains of the timber structure in the spillway. The only significant stability problem that exists at the embankment is a bulge near the left abutment of the embankment. The owner presently has no intention of returning the dam to its design condition because there is no present requirement for increased water supply storage at the dam. There are no functional emergency drawdown facilities at the dam. Maintenance of the dam is inadequate.

Book excerpt: Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, Lake Nessmuk Dam is judged to be in good condition. The existing spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. There is a slope stability analysis for the embankment, and it indicates that the embankment has adequate factors of safety. There is no evidence of problems threatening the embankment. The visual inspection (25 July 1979) revealed that it is uncertain that the gate is operational. (Author).
