Book excerpt: The Hosensock Dam is a zoned earthfill dam designed by the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service for flood control purposes. The principal features of the dam include the embankment, a concrete drop inlet type primary spillway and an emergency spillway section at the right abutment. The emergency spillway is constructed as an earth structure with the overflow section about six feet lower than the crest of the main embankment. The embankment crest design elevation is 1126 and its length is 795 feet from the left abutment to the emergency spillway. The height of the dam is 35 feet above the streambed. A two foot thick blanket drain is located under the downstream slope of the embankment. This blanket is composed of a filter material and is about 450 feet by 40 feet in plan dimension. The primary spillway is a reinforced concrete riser located at the upstream toe of the embankment near the center of the dam.

The emergency spillway is constructed as an earth structure with the overflow section about 4.8 feet lower than the crest of the main embankment. A cutoff trench, with a ten foot bottom width and 1H and 1V side slopes, is located on centerline beneath the main embankment. Its depth varies to ten feet. The embankment crest design elevation is 735.6 and its length is 1,180 feet. The height of the dam is 25 feet above the streambed. A seepage drain is located under the downstream slope of the embankment. This drain consists of a 6 inch diameter perforated pipe in a filter bed. The drain discharges to the outlet channel of the principal spillway. The principal spillway is a reinforced concrete riser located at the upstream toe of the embankment near the right abutment of the dam. A pond drain is located 18.5 feet upstream of the spillway structure. A 15-inch cast iron pipe connects the submerged drain intake to the spillway unit. The plans indicate that a 1/4-inch plate is bolted onto a flange at the downstream end of this pipe at its terminus in the inlet structure.

Book excerpt: The Mud Run Dam was designed and constructed in 1879 by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company. It was described in a 1914 report as an earthfill structure 1,124 feet in length. Very little information could be obtained as to the original construction. It was reported that the ground surface was well plowed to form a good bond with the fill and that the material, which was a mixture of clay and disintegrated conglomerate, was laid in layers and rolled. The dam was practically rebuilt in 1903 by adding to the then existing structure. The centerline was moved 16 feet downstream and the dam crest was increased from 8 feet to 24 feet in width and raised five feet in elevation. The downstream slope was changed from 1-1/2H to 1V to 2H to 1V and both slopes were paved with riprap. The material used in the enlargement was clay and disintegrated conglomerate which was laid in layers from 6 inches to 8 inches and rolled. A concrete core wall five feet wide on top and ten feet wide at the bottom was carried through a previous layer of underlying sand and gravel.

The top of the core wall is at elevation 1432.5 which is 2.5 feet below the crest elevation of the embankment at elevation 1435.0. (Note: Project datum is 25 feet less than the USGS elevations). Based on the visual inspection, past performance and the available engineering data, the dam and its appurtenant structures appear to be in good condition. The hydrologic and hydraulic calculations indicate that the spillway for this dam has the capacity for passing 47 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. Although 1/2 PMF will cause some overtopping, the depth of flow due to the overtopping is less than that judged to cause failure and therefore, the spillway, while inadequate, is not considered seriously inadequate.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this inspection is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life and property. The dam's location is Tremont Township, Schuylkill County U.S.G.S. Quadrangle - Pine Grove, Pa. The general appearance of the Black Creek Intake Dam is good, except that a heavy growth of trees covers the downstream slope of the embankment (Photograph No. 2). The slopes appear to be stable. A considerable amount of water was flowing through rocks just beyond the downstream toe near the spillway. This water appears to originate from the spillway channel. The overall visual evaluation of these facilities indicates that the dam is in good condition. The trees on the embankment should be removed. The observed steady seepage beyond the toe of the embankment adjacent to the spillway outlet channel has been a long standing condition (40 + or - years) and is not considered to be a serious problem at this time.

Book excerpt: Hosensack No. 4 Dam is a masonry structure with an upstream embankment. The dam has a maximum height of about 32 feet and a length of 310 feet. A 175-foot long overflow spillway is located about 100 feet from the right abutment near the center of the structure and is capped with concrete in the masonry portion. A 24-inch diameter reinforced concrete drain pipe is located in the non-overflow portion of the dam about 3.5 feet left of the spillway section. Discharge through the pipe is controlled with stop planks in a drainage tower approximately 15 feet downstream from the intake. A review of the results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicates that the spillway is able to pass the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) without the dam being overtopped; therefore, the spillway is considered 'Adequate'. Based on visual observation and a review of the information obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, Hosensack No. 4 Dam appears to be in poor condition.

The first outlet works, which is near the right end of the embankment, consists of a concrete intake structure, two 24-inch diameter cast-iron pipes, and a valve house. This outlet works is connected to the water supply system. The second outlet works, which is near the left end of the dam, is similar to the first except it consists of a single 24-inch diameter pipe. The second outlet works provides the emergency drawdown capability. The concrete chute spillway is at the left abutment of the dam. Its crest is 3.0 feet below the design elevation of the top of the dam and is 75 feet long. The approach channel is short and concrete paved. The exit channel is a continuation of the chute. A bridge extends across the spillway crest. It is supported by two piers.
