Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Calamities From God and Thoughts on President Lincoln's Assassination: A Discourse, Delivered at the Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Richland Sabbath Even'g, April 23, 1865 Amos, in the commencement of this chapter, expatiates on the Divine goodness towards the Hebrew people - tells them of their abuse of it - and predicts the certainty of the punishment that must follow. "Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, "You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities." Then in a series of pointed and parabolic interrogations, the prophet illustrates the punishment which must be endured as the result of disobedience. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed? "Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? "Can a bird fall in a snare from the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? "Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?" The positiveness of punishment for sin, is the point insisted on in these similitudes, on the hypothesis that the guilty people did not repent. Though the Lord had determined to inflict punishment on them, yet He did not execute it until He had given them warning, and afforded them an opportunity to develop penitence and obedience. "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but (except) He revealeth His secret (purpose) unto His servants the prophets." Reynolds edits and introduces a broad selection of Abraham Lincoln’s writings—from his earliest days through his last. Lincoln’s Selected Writings includes a rich selection of his public and private letters, speeches, eulogies, proposals, debate transcriptions, addresses (including the First and Second Inaugurals), and more. The texts are accompanied by explanatory annotations, a detailed preface, a note on the texts, and a list of abbreviations. Lincoln’s writings are followed by contemporary responses to him in poems, songs, and articles; representations of Lincoln in modern imaginative and nonfiction writing; and selections from recent cross-disciplinary studies of Lincoln—including discussions of his literary techniques and oratorical style as well as examinations of his political evolution in new cultural and social contexts. Among the many contributors are Horace Greeley, Jesse Hutchinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Karl Marx, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Victor Hugo, and Walt Whitman. “Modern Views” presents sixteen major interpretations of Lincoln’s life, work, and legacy carefully chosen to promote discussion. The contributors are Carl Sandburg, Allen C. Guelzo, James Oakes, Gillian Silverman, Richard N. Current, Harold Holzer, Sean Wilentz, Eric Foner, Manisha Sinha, Robert A. Ferguson, Gabor Boritt, James McPherson, Stephen Cushman, Faith Barrett, David S. Reynolds, and Richard Carwardine and Jay Sexton. A chronology, selected bibliography, and index are also included.

Book excerpt: For the 150th anniversary, Harold Holzer (The Civil War in 150 Objects) presents an unprecedented firsthand chronicle of one of the most pivotal moments in American history. On April 14, 1865, Good Friday, the Civil War claimed its ultimate sacrifice. President Lincoln Assassinated!! recaptures the dramatic immediacy of Lincoln’s assassination, the hunt for the conspirators and their military trial, and the nation’s mourning for the martyred president. The fateful story is told in more than eighty original documents—eyewitness reports, medical records, trial transcripts, newspaper articles, speeches, letters, diary entries, and poems—by more than seventy-five participants and observers, including the assassin John Wilkes Booth and Boston Corbett, the soldier who shot him. Courtroom testimony exposes the intricacies of the plot to kill the president; eulogies by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Wendell Phillips, and Benjamin Disraeli and poetry by Walt Whitman, Herman Melville and Julia Ward Howe give eloquent voice to grief; two emotional speeches by Frederick Douglass—one of them never before published—reveal his evolving perspective on Lincoln’s legacy. Together these voices combine to reveal the full panorama of one the most shocking and tragic events in our history.
