Book excerpt: This report presents a comprehensive summary of a number of methods used in filtering narrowband jammers and interference out of direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. The basic concept is presented first followed by a discussion of several analog techniques for interference suppression. Most of the emphasis is on digital adaptive methods, which rely on adaptive filtering algorithms. Many of these algorithms are highlighted. This is followed by a discussion on the research which has been conducted in digital excision over the past several years. Two cases based on the author's work are also presented. The first details the performance one can expect from the recursive least squares algorithm when the interferer is a stable tone. An analytical model, which predicts the bit error rate performance for the recursive algorithm under certain conditions, is derived. This model is compared to results obtained from computer simulation, the tracking and filtering capabilities of hte block and recursive least square algorithms when the interference is of the FM-type, i.e., a swept tone having a bandwidth which is approximately 20% of the chip rate. Book excerpt: Many methods have been proposed for suppressing interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum signal and a number of these utilize adaptive transversal suppression filters to remove a large portion of the interference prior to despreading. This report investigates the performance of predictive and two-sided adaptive filtering systems and presents a method to improve the performance of the predictive filter by compensating for the distortion introduced into the desired direct sequence signal during the adaptive filtering process. It is shown that the predictive filter acts as a pre-whitener and the two-sided filter acts as a power inverter. Additionally, the two-sided adaptive filter automatically performs the same function as the compensated predictive filter. The performance of the adaptive systems is also studied when there is multipath propagation and it is shown that the presence of multipath allows the filters to partially suppress the desired direct sequence signal, resulting in performance loss. A combination of simulation and analysis was used to perform this study. Simulations were performed using the Signal Processing Work System (SPW) from Alta Group of Cadence Design Systems, Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of personal and wireless communications is a burgeoning field. Technology advances and new frequency allocations for personal communication services (PCS) are creating numerous business and technical opportunities. It is becoming clear that an essential requirement for exploiting opportunities is the ability to track the dramatic changes in wireless technology, which is a principal aim of this book. Wireless Personal Communications: Research Developments places particular emphasis on the areas of signal processing, propagation and spread-spectrum, and emerging communication systems. This book contains new results on adaptive antennas for capacity improvements in wireless communication systems, as well as state-of-the-art information on the latest technical developments. Also included are several chapters which discuss the impact of defense conversion on the wireless industry, and related competitive issues. The six parts of the book each focus on a distinct issue in wireless communications. Part I contains several tutorial chapters on key areas in wireless communications. The first chapter is on radio wave propagation for emerging wireless personal communication systems. Chapter two contains a comprehensive study of emerging DSP-based interference rejection techniques for single channel (antenna) systems. Chapter three deals with spread spectrum wireless communications, explaining the concept of spread spectrum, modeling techniques for spread spectrum, and current applications and research issues for spread spectrum systems. Part II focuses on digital signal processing and spread spectrum, two means of creating interference and multipath robust communications. Part III concerns propagation aspects of wireless communications. Part IV discusses the performance of emerging wireless systems. Part V describes the opportunities and pitfalls of defense conversion from the perspective of several U.S. defense firms that have successfully made the transition to commercial wireless. The final section discusses a number of competitive issues regarding personal communication services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a novel Kalman filtering approach to the suppression of narrowband interference from direct sequence spread spectrum communications systems. The algorithm is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto a function related to the interference. The net result is an estimate of the phase of the interference and its amplitude. The algorithm is characterized through computer simulation for the case of narrowband Gaussian noise interference. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for interference bandwidths ranging from 0.5% to 5.0% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The report concludes with three adaptive architectures.-The first is suitable for constant envelope interference; the second is a more general structure; and the third incorporate a decision-feedback structure accompanied with a training sequence.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: This report describes results of an investigation of narrowband interference suppression in a pseudo-noise (PN) spread spectrum digital communication system in which the signal is also distorted by channel multipath and fading. Techniques for determining the coefficients of a linear, interference suppression filter are described, which are based on linear prediction and conventional spectral analysis methods. Numerical results are presented on the effectiveness of the linear filter in suppressing the interference. Error rate results, obtained via Monte Carlo simulation are presented for a receiver that employs interference suppression and equalization for a fading multipath channel. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents research results focused on the mitigation of both narrowband and multiple access interference in direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. Both linear and nonlinear adaptive algorithmic approaches are developed and reported. Specific attention has been paid to making the algorithmic practicable. In addition to the algorithmic development, a software simulation for a code division multiple access system is developed using a commercially available programming environment.
