Book excerpt: Many methods have been proposed for suppressing interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum signal, including time domain adaptive filtering and transform domain excision. This report presents Monte Carlo simulation results which directly compare the performance of predictive and two sided adaptive filters, time domain adaptive correlation, transform domain excision with modulated lapped transforms and time domain correlation, and transform domain excision with modulated lapped transforms and transform domain excision. Comparisons are made for a number of different jammers, including fixed and swept frequency (i.e. chirp) tones, narrowband Gaussian interference, and pulsed tone and narrowband Gaussian interference. The performance of all the systems is compared under identical jamming conditions. Simulations were performed using the Signal Processing WorkSystem (SPW) Prom Alta Group of Cadence Design Systems, Inc. The results indicate that the transform domain excision with the modulated lapped transform and time domain correlation may provide the best compromise in implementation complexity and performance over the range of interferers considered.

Book excerpt: Spread-spectrum signals are used widely in military and commercial communication systems due to their interference rejection capability and their lower probability of interception. In military applications the effects of intentional interference (jamming) are mitigated by the processing gain of the spread-spectrum system. In many spread-spectrum systems, processing gain alone is not sufficient to achieve satisfactory system performance and additional interference rejection techniques need to be employed. The interference suppression circuit is placed prior to the spectrum despreader with the goal of reducing the jammer/interferer energy to an adequately low level that can be handled by the system processing gain. We have presented a novel knowledge-based interference cancellation scheme for direct sequence spread-spectrum systems. This innovative approach utilizes: (1) IPUS, an expert system for the Integrated processing and Understanding of signals, to monitor the communication signal environment in order to determine the parameters of interfering signals within a pre-specified accuracy, and (2) Expert system rules to select from a library of preselected techniques, suitable interference rejection schemes based upon the knowledge obtained from monitoring the signal environment. The effectiveness of this novel interference rejection capability is demonstrated by considering a number of interference scenarios and using the software package SPW(copyright), a time-domain Signal Processing Worksystem.

Throughout the book, learning is facilitated by many new or streamlined derivations of the classical theory. Problems at the end of each chapter are intended to assist readers in consolidating their knowledge and to provide practice in analytical techniques. The choice of specific topics is tempered by the author’s judgment of their practical significance and interest to both researchers and system designers. The evolution of spread spectrum communication systems and the prominence of new mathematical methods in their design provided the motivation to undertake this new edition of the book. This edition is intended to enable readers to understand the current state-of-the-art in this field. More than 20 percent of the material in this edition is new, including a chapter on systems with iterative channel estimation, and the remainder of the material has been thoroughly revised.

Book excerpt: Many methods have been proposed for suppressing interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum signal and a number of these utilize adaptive transversal suppression filters to remove a large portion of the interference prior to despreading. This report investigates the performance of predictive and two-sided adaptive filtering systems and presents a method to improve the performance of the predictive filter by compensating for the distortion introduced into the desired direct sequence signal during the adaptive filtering process. It is shown that the predictive filter acts as a pre-whitener and the two-sided filter acts as a power inverter. Additionally, the two-sided adaptive filter automatically performs the same function as the compensated predictive filter. The performance of the adaptive systems is also studied when there is multipath propagation and it is shown that the presence of multipath allows the filters to partially suppress the desired direct sequence signal, resulting in performance loss. A combination of simulation and analysis was used to perform this study. Simulations were performed using the Signal Processing Work System (SPW) from Alta Group of Cadence Design Systems, Inc.

Book excerpt: A direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) receiver is vulnerable to being desensitized by high-power narrowband signals within its wide received bandwidth. A solution to this problem is to detect the interfering signals and remove them from the received bandwidth in a process called narrowband interference excision. This can be achieved through a number of existing techniques. However, a hybrid system that utilizes both DSSS and frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) techniques complicates the solution. This thesis investigates one technique for narrowband interference excision in the context of such a hybrid frequency-hopping/direct-sequence spread-spectrum (FH/DSSS) system. This technique is based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). An overview of DFT-based excision employing an overlap-and-add architecture is given. The critical properties of the window function used are examined, including windowing loss, excision lass, and interference rejection. Finally, the application of DFT-based excision in a hybrid FH/DSSS system is explored.

Book excerpt: The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation on one side and the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) technique on the other side have motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques since 1993. This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users' signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA.
