Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada is a survey course about one of the most interesting chapters in Canadian railway history. The late Omer Lavallee's original work was published by Railfare Books in 1972, and soon sold out. Long-sought by collectors, historians and railway enthusiasts, his excellent material has now been expanded (over 40 percent) by the author's long-time friend and collaborator, editor Ronald Ritchie. Omer Lavallee's survey indicates the Province of Ontario, Canada, was the birth place - in July 1871 - of the first narrow gauge steam-operated public railway in North America . . . and the Lingan Colliery Tramway in Cape Breton may have been - in 1866 - the first narrow gauge steam-operated railway in the Western Hemisphere. Two dozen different railway systems are covered within the book's twenty-five chapters. There are 192 rare photographs - including a section of 66 full-color photos - interesting sketches, and informative maps of each line to show route details. These are keyed to an overall map, pinpointing the railway's exact location within Canada. Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada contains listings of railway mileage, chronological and geographical facts about each system, and locomotive information. Several other useful features include: time-mileage charts, 50 diagrams, charts and tables, equipment rosters for virtually all the railways, and gradient profiles of three steeply-graded mountain routes. The book includes a specially-commissioned painting by famed railway artist Wentworth Folkins, illustrating Newfoundland Railway's Overland approaching Port-aux-Basque on the last lap of its 547-mile journey from Newfoundland's capital city, St. John's.

Together with engineers from the United States, Brazil, and the uttermost parts of the earth, have wended their way to the Welsh hills to behold and investigate and criticise this minature iron road. The novelty was so enduring at first. That scarcely a week elapsed without self-appointed inquisitors presenting them selves before the chief engineer and manager of the line, Mr. Spooner, until at last he began to wonder whether he acted in that capacity or as a showman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrow Gauge Railroad System a Complete Success: Its Adaptability to the Business of the Pacific Coast Yet our undeveloped regions must be opened, and that they cannot be opened without the agency of railroads is as plain an axiom as the former is a fact. From such a statement the only conclusion that can be arrived at is that the present system must be changed for one much less expensive and adapted to the wants of the locality. It ought to be engraved on the minds of every engineer and railroad promoter, that every inch added to the width of a gauge beyond what is absolutely necessary for the traffic to be handled, adds to the cost of construction, increases the pro portion of dead weight, increases the cost of working, and in consequence reduces the useful effect of railroads. Book excerpt: To those with an interest in railroad history in the United States, mention of the words "narrow gauge" may bring to mind the extensive three-foot-gauge railroads of Colorado and Utah or perhaps the famous two-foot-gauge lines in Maine. However, few would think first of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Nonetheless, between 1877 and 1893, an extensive narrow-gauge railroad developed in Oregon" one that had aspirations of crossing the Cascade Mountains and connecting with the Central Pacific Railroad, thus giving Oregon its first access to the transcontinental railroad system. It is this railroad system, from its inception in 1877 to the present day, that Ed Austin explores herein.
