Book excerpt: At a time when the cooperation between white abolitionists and African Americans was limited, as was the alliance between the woman suffrage movement and the abolitionists, Sojourner Truth was a figure that brought all factions together by her skills as a public speaker and by her common sense. She worked with acumen to claim and actively gain rights for all human beings, starting with those who were enslaved, but not excluding women, the poor, the homeless, and the unemployed. Truth believed that all people could be enlightened about their actions and choose to behave better if they were educated by others, and persistently acted upon these beliefs.

Book excerpt: Sojourner Truth, one of the most revered figures in American history, explains her road to liberation, spiritual enlightenment and the development of her feminist values. It’s a critical view of her enduring commitment to freedom and equality. In The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, the author delivers an honest look at her eventful life. Starting in New York, where she born to enslaved parents, Sojourner eventually escaped with her daughter in tow. Later, she became the first black woman to sue a white slaveowner for custody of her own child. She won the case, setting a precedent that many African Americans would follow. This narrative also includes her work as a preacher, where she focused on spreading the word of God. Truth became a charismatic orator, seeking liberation and gender equality. The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is a harrowing yet inspiring tale of an American hero. It explores how a formerly enslaved woman defied the odds to become a powerful beacon of hope. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Sojourner Truth (ca. 1799-1883) is the name that New York slave Isabella Van Wagenen adopted late in life and used while achieving international renown as an itinerant preacher and public speaker. Born into slavery, Van Wagenen passed through the hands of five masters before her emancipation in 1828. When her son was illegally sold outside New York state lines in the same year, Van Wagenen won his freedom in a lawsuit against Solomon Gedney, a wealthy white man. Van Wagenen subsequently moved to New York City, where she became a supporter of Robert Matthews, the self-proclaimed prophet Matthias. When Matthias's utopian commune disbanded, Van Wagenen left New York City, changed her name to Sojourner Truth, and began to preach. She eventually joined the Northampton Association, another organization with utopian pretensions. There she met Olive Gilbert (1801-1884), who served as the amanuensis for the 1850 first edition of Truth's Narrative.

She took him to court--and won! Before she was Sojourner Truth, she was known simply as Belle. Born a slave in New York sometime around 1797, she was later sold and separated from her family. Even after she escaped from slavery, she knew her work was not yet done. She changed her name and traveled, inspiring everyone she met and sharing her story until her death in 1883 at age eighty-six. In this easy-to-read biography, Yona Zeldis McDonough continues to share that remarkable story.
