Book Synopsis Macro-Criminalidad: Complejidad Y Resiliencia De Las Redes Criminales by : Eduardo Salcedo-Albaran
Download or read book Macro-Criminalidad: Complejidad Y Resiliencia De Las Redes Criminales written by Eduardo Salcedo-Albaran and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug Trafficking, Corruption and States is cutting edge research. Garay Salamanca and Salcedo-Albarn, along with their contributing authors help document the transition from economic to political imperatives within transnational drug cartels. The break from the Zetas by La Familia Michoacana is one example contained in their empirical survey. Social Network Analysis is their tool for illuminating the varying dynamics of cartel-state inter-penetration and reconfiguration. In doing so they clearly discern between State Capture (StC) and Co-opted State Reconfiguration (CStR). As the drug wars and criminal insurgencies rage in the Americas and beyond, this seminal framework will facilitate efforts by scholars, law enforcement officials, intelligence analysts and policymakers to understand shifts in sovereignty, and to illuminate the mechanisms of transnational illicit networks and their interaction with the state.

Book Synopsis Varieties of capitalism and Mexico, after the economic reforms between 1982 and 2012 by : Gabriel Alonso Santana
Download or read book Varieties of capitalism and Mexico, after the economic reforms between 1982 and 2012 written by Gabriel Alonso Santana and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work departs from the literature about Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) to study Mexico after the economic and political reforms enacted there between 1982 an 2012, which were characterised as neo liberal. These were a 180º turn from the previous twelve years, when the State invested heavily in corporations and even in oil production and export. If such previous economic structure was similar to a state-led, corporatist but capitalist economy, perhaps the new one would similarly follow a specific model. The question of the study is: after the economic reforms in Mexico between 1982 and 2012, what is the VoC of Mexico? This is about the open market, international free trade and investment, privatisation and other economic reforms that began in Mexico in that period. This book also comments on some indicators of economic wellbeing, as these reflect the results of the reforms. Finally, it makes a critical assessment of those changes, before attempting to answer the research question.

Book excerpt: The 4th Small Wars JournalEl Centro anthology comes at a pivotal time, roughly a third of the way through the term, for the Enrique Pea Nieto administration in Mexico. The mass kidnapping and execution of 43 rural student teachers in Iguala, Guerrero in late September 2014 has only served to further highlight the corruptive effects of organized crime on the public institutions in that country. In addition, many other states in Latin America are now suffering at the hands of criminal insurgents who are threatening their citizens and challenging their sovereign rights. Book Synopsis Drug Policies and the Politics of Drugs in the Americas by : Beatriz Caiuby Labate
Download or read book Drug Policies and the Politics of Drugs in the Americas written by Beatriz Caiuby Labate and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of studies of drug policies in several Latin American countries. The chapters analyze the specific histories of drug policies in each country, as well as related phenomena and case studies throughout the region. It presents conceptual reflections on the origins of prohibition and the “War on Drugs,” including the topic of human rights and cognitive freedom. Further, the collection reflects on the pioneering role of some Latin American countries in changing paradigms of international drug policy. Each case study provides an analysis of where each state is now in terms of policy reform within the context of its history and current socio-political circumstances. Concurrently, local movements, initiatives, and backlash against the reformist debate within the hemisphere are examined. The recent changes regarding the regulation of marijuana in the United States and their possible impact on Latin America are also addressed. This work is an important, up-to-date and well-researched reference for all who are interested in drug policy from a Latin American perspective.
Book Synopsis Global Criminal and Sovereign Free Economies and the Demise of the Western Democracies by : Robert J. Bunker
Download or read book Global Criminal and Sovereign Free Economies and the Demise of the Western Democracies written by Robert J. Bunker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the many economic benefits of globalization and the triumph and spread of democratic liberalism with the end of the Cold War, following the demise of the Soviet Union. This work takes issue with such "wine and roses" perspectives about the future of the Western democracies and their faith-based views on the moral purity of a globalized marketplace. It also questions many of the assumptions found in the status quo reinforcing discipline of international political economy (IPE)—a discipline that focuses on the formal and legitimate economies and the façade they present that international relations and commerce is still dominated and dictated solely by the old Westphalian state centric system. Having highlighted these concerns, this book looks at two major themes. The first theme focuses on the theoretical perception that a "Dark Renaissance" is taking place globally—one in which the Western liberal democracies and its citizens are ill prepared to respond because it exists at the trans-civilization level, bridging the modern to the post-modern world. The second theme focuses on the actual process of state deconstruction that is taking place. This process is leading to what may become the very undoing of the democracies. Drawing together experts from a variety of backgrounds, this work explores the increasing shift away from formal based capitalism and evaluates through case studies how different states are responding to the challenges they face. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of international political economy.
Download or read book Marijuana Boom written by Lina Britto and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Colombia became one of the world’s largest producers of cocaine in the 1980s, traffickers from the Caribbean coast partnered with American buyers in the 1970s to make the South American country the main supplier of marijuana for a booming US drug market, fueled by the US hippie counterculture. How did Colombia become central to the creation of an international drug trafficking circuit? Marijuana Boom is the story of this forgotten history. Combining deep archival research with unprecedented oral history, Lina Britto deciphers a puzzle: Why did the Colombian coffee republic, a model of Latin American representative democracy and economic modernization, transform into a drug paradise, and at what cost?
Book Synopsis Dirty Entanglements by : Louise I. Shelley
Download or read book Dirty Entanglements written by Louise I. Shelley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entangled threat of crime, corruption, and terrorism now deserves high-level policy attention because of its growth trajectory. Using lively case studies, this book analyzes the transformation of crime and terrorism and the business logic of terrorism. Louise I. Shelley concludes that corruption, crime, and terrorism will remain important security challenges in the twenty-first century as a result of economic and demographic inequalities in the world, the rise of ethnic and sectarian violence, climate change, the growth of technology, and the failure of nineteenth- and twentieth-century institutions to respond to these challenges when they emerged.
Book Synopsis Traditional Organized Crime in the Modern World by : Dina Siegel
Download or read book Traditional Organized Crime in the Modern World written by Dina Siegel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite strenuous efforts from local, national, and international law enforcement, organized crime continues to thrive and prosper—even centuries-old crime outfits are surviving the global forces of mass migration and multinational business and finance. From traditional gangland enterprises such as narcotics, gambling, and prostitution, the world’s mafias have moved into new sources of illegal income, including high-tech arms smuggling, money laundering, and identity fraud. Traditional Crime in the Modern World tracks these organizations—the Italian and Mexican mafias, Columbian drug cartels, Chinese triads, and others—across five continents as they adapt to change, and assesses their prospects in the short and long term. World events such as the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 9/11 terror attacks are discussed in the context of contributing to emerging markets for illicit goods and services, and to evolving partnerships among criminal entities. This timely volume: • Provides a comprehensive overview of how mafia-like structures function today. • Analyzes in depth national crime situations with global implications. • Examines the migration of organized crime groups and their operations in their new countries. • Gauges the influence of digital and other technologies on organized crime. • Where applicable, notes the links between organized crime and national political institutions. • Describes the impact of the global financial crisis on crime organizations. Concise, compelling, and deeply documented, Traditional Crime in the Modern World is an eye-opening resource for researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice, particularly with an interest in organized crime and trafficking, as well as related topics of Demography, Political Science, and International Relations.
Book Synopsis Violence and Crime in Latin America by : Gema Santamaría
Download or read book Violence and Crime in Latin America written by Gema Santamaría and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to media reports, Latin America is one of the most violent regions in the world—a distinction it held throughout the twentieth century. The authors of Violence and Crime in Latin America contend that perceptions and representations of violence and crime directly impact such behaviors, creating profound consequences for the political and social fabric of Latin American nations. Written by distinguished scholars of Latin American history, sociology, anthropology, and political science, the essays in this volume range from Mexico and Argentina to Colombia and Brazil in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, addressing such issues as extralegal violence in Mexico, the myth of indigenous criminality in Guatemala, and governments’ selective blindness to violent crime in Brazil and Jamaica. The authors in this collection examine not only the social construction and political visibility of violence and crime in Latin America, but the justifications for them as well. Analytically and historically, these essays show how Latin American citizens have sanctioned criminal and violent practices and incorporated them into social relations, everyday practices, and institutional settings. At the same time, the authors explore the power struggles that inform distinctions between illegitimate versus legitimate violence. Violence and Crime in Latin America makes a substantive contribution to understanding a key problem facing Latin America today. In its historical depth and ethnographic reach, this original and thought-provoking volume enhances our understanding of crime and violence throughout the Western Hemisphere.
Book Synopsis The Darkest Sides of Politics, II by : Jeffrey M. Bale
Download or read book The Darkest Sides of Politics, II written by Jeffrey M. Bale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a wide array of phenomena that arguably constitute the most noxious, extreme, terrifying, murderous, secretive, authoritarian, and/or anti-democratic aspects of national and international politics. Scholars should not ignore these "dark sides" of politics, however unpleasant they may be, since they influence the world in a multitude of harmful ways. The second volume in this two-volume collection focuses primarily on assorted religious extremists, including apocalyptic millenarian cults, Islamists, and jihadist terrorist networks, as well as CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) terrorism and the supposedly new "nexus" between organized criminal and extremist groups employing terrorist operational techniques. A range of global case studies are included, most of which focus on the lesser known activities of certain religious extremist milieus. This collection should prove to be essential reading for students and researchers interested in understanding seemingly arcane but nonetheless important dimensions of recent historical and contemporary politics.

Book Synopsis A Narco History by : Carmen Boullosa
Download or read book A Narco History written by Carmen Boullosa and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2016-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "Mexican Drug War" misleads. It implies that the ongoing bloodbath, which has now killed well over 100,000 people, is an internal Mexican affair. But this diverts attention from the U.S. role in creating and sustaining the carnage. It's not just that Americans buy drugs from, and sell weapons to, Mexico's murderous cartels. It's that ever since the U.S. prohibited the use and sale of drugs in the early 1900s, it has pressured Mexico into acting as its border enforcer--with increasingly deadly consequences. Mexico was not a helpless victim. Powerful forces within the country profited hugely from supplying Americans with what their government forbade them. But the policies that spawned the drug war have proved disastrous for both countries. Written by two award-winning authors, one American and the other Mexican,A Narco History reviews the interlocking twentieth-century histories that produced this twenty-first century calamity, and proposes how to end it.
