Download or read book Naphtalene written by Alia Mamdouh and published by The Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seen through the eyes of a strong-willed and perceptive young girl, Naphtalene beautifully captures the atmosphere of Baghdad in the 1940s and 1950s. Through her rich and lyrical descriptions, Alia Mamdouh vividly recreates a city of public steam baths, roadside butchers, and childhood games played in the same streets where political demonstrations against British colonialism are beginning to take place. At the heart of the novel is nine-year-old Huda, a girl whose fiery, defiant nature contrasts sharply with her own inherent powerlessness. Through Mamdouh's strikingly inventive use of language, Huda's stream-of-consciousness narrative expands to take in the life not only of a young girl and her family, but of her street, her neighborhood, and her country. Alia Mamdouh, winner of the Naguib Mahfouz Award in Arabic Literature, is a journalist, essayist and novelist living in exile in Paris. Long banned from publishing in Saddam Hussein's Iraq, she is the author of essays, short stories, and four novels, of which Naphtalene is the most widely acclaimed and translated.

This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemical industry is increasingly faced with problems arizing from chemicals produced during the manufacture of halogenated biphenyls or phenols. Knowledge of these chemicals and their destructive properties is sporadic, and the acute toxicity of this group varies widely. This informative revised edition presents the chemistry, environmental pollution problems, animal toxicology and information about structure-activity relationships. A brief overview is given of worker exposure and occupational illness. The book is divided into three parts: chemistry and environmental contamination; experimental toxicology; and human exposure and effects. Because of the great deal of interest in these compounds much new research work has been conducted since the first edition of this book was published. This revised edition has retained the effectiveness and clarity of the first edition, while being supplemented with new information, condensed old information, and examples of recent incidents.
Book Synopsis Industrial Aromatic Chemistry by : Heinz-Gerhard Franck
Download or read book Industrial Aromatic Chemistry written by Heinz-Gerhard Franck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aromatic organic hydrocarbons and heterocycles represent a bulk of about one third of all industrially produced organic basic materials. Aromatic compounds such as benzene, phenol, naphthalene, anthracene, and their homologues, are derived from raw materials, coal, crude oil and biogenic resources by thermal and catalytic refining processes. This book introduces the chemistry of aromatics with a brief discussion of the aromatic character and a survey of historical aspects, particularly the development of the organic dye industry during the 19th century. The main emphasis of the book is to give a clear prospect of industrial processes for the production and the derivatisation of aromatics with consistent flow diagrams. Economical aspects of by- and side-products are especially regarded. For the most important aromatics an analysis of the international market included their derivatives: polymers, pesticides, dyes, pigments and drugs. Professional scientists, managers and students in chemistry and chemical engineering will find a wealth of information for their career and daily work.

A surfactant is briefly defined as a material that can greatly reduce the surface tension of water when used in very low con-centrations. These are one of many different compounds that make up a detergent. They are added to remove dirt from skin, clothes and household articles particularly in kitchens and bathrooms. They are also used extensively in industry. A disinfectant or agent that frees from infection is ordinarily a chemical agent which kills disease germs or other harmful micro-organisms and is applied to inanimate objects. The specific way in which a disinfectant agent is used is dependent on both the desired objective and the infectious agent present. Growing emphasis on health, safety and sanitation is fuelling demand for disinfectants & surfactants across industries such as food processing, healthcare and consumer. Book Synopsis Naphthalene by : Canada. Pest Management Regulatory Agency
Download or read book Naphthalene written by Canada. Pest Management Regulatory Agency and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a re-evaluation of the insecticidal uses of naphthalene, Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is proposing continued registration for the sale and use of products containing naphthalene in Canada. When used as a pest control product, naphthalene is an insecticide in the form of mothballs or flakes for control of moth and larvae which are destructive to textiles made of natural fibres. Moth balls or flakes are to be placed by hand by home owners in airtight containers (trunk or chest) where clothing is stored. Joints or holes are to be sealed with adhesive tape to prevent loss of vapour and entry of insects. Naphthalene vapours build up to levels toxic to the adult or larvae forms of the moth. This Proposed Re-evaluation Decision is a consultation document that summarizes the science evaluation for naphthalene and presents the reasons for the proposed re-evaluation decision. The information is presented in two parts. The Overview describes the regulatory process and key points of the evaluation, while the Science Evaluation provides more detailed information on the assessment of naphthalene.--Document.
