Book excerpt: In May 1517, Luigi of Aragon, one of the most wealthy, cultivated and well-connected of Italian cardinals, left Italy for a leisurely tour through Germany, Switzerland, the Low Countries and France, which lasted until January 1518. Too grand to keep a record of his own movements, he was well-served by his chaplain and amanuensis, Antonio de Beatis, who day by day kept a steadily enthusiastic record of the scenes they passed amongst. The range of de Beatis's interests was quite remarkably wide. His descriptions of individuals, landscapes, towns, of whole regions and the characters and customs of their inhabitants, of churches, palaces, relics and works of art provide one of the clearest impressions we have of the physical quality of life in north-western Europe in the Renaissance. This range owes something to the company he kept. Without the Cardinal he would not have had the organs played in the churches they visited, would not have watched Raphael's tapestries being woven in Brussels or met Leonardo da Vinci at Amboise. But it owes still more to the traditions which by 1517 suggested not only what a curious traveller should look at but the way in which he might organise his impressions, and express them in writing. For this reason most of the editor's Introduction is devoted to providing a pioneering account of the evolution of the Renaissance travel journal. Though the Italian text published in the German edition of Ludwig Pastor in 1905 has been frequently quoted by political, social and art historians, the Journal has not previously been translated into English.

Book excerpt: The groundbreaking history of the Atlantic slave trade, winner of the Mark Lynton History Prize, the Frederick Douglass Book Prize, and the J. Russell Major Prize. In The Diligent, acclaimed historian Robert Harms reveals the complex workings of the slave trade by drawing on the private journal of First Lieutenant Robert Durand to recreate the macabre journey of a French slave ship. The Diligent began her journey in Brittany in 1731, and Harms follows her along the African coast where her goods were traded for slaves, then to Martinique where her captives were sold to work on sugar plantations. He brings to life a world in which slavery was carried out without qualms: the gruesome details of daily life aboard a slave ship, French merchants wrangling for the right to traffic in slaves, African kings waging epic wars for control of slave trading posts, and representatives of European governments negotiating the complicated politics of the Guinea coast to ensure a steady supply of labor for their countries' colonies. By combining the detailed story of an expedition with an exploration of the significant personalities and events that were shaping Europe, West Africa, and the Caribbean in the early eighteenth century, The Diligent provides an intimate understanding of a horrifying world.

Book excerpt: Phytoplankton blooms, micro-algal blooms, toxic algae, red tides, or harmful algae, are all terms for naturally occurring phenomena that have occurred throughout recorded history. About 300 hundred species of micro algae are reported at times to form mass occurrence, so called blooms. Nearly one fourth of these species are known to produce toxins. Even non-toxic algal blooms can have devastating impacts when they lead to kills of fish and invertebrates by generating anoxic conditions. Some algal species, although non-toxic to humans, can produce exudates that can cause damage to the delicate gill tissues of fish (raphidophytes Chattonella, Heterosigma, and dinoflagellates Karenia, Karlodinium) . Aquatic animals can suffer devastating mortalities, which could lead economical and food losses, and eventually became a food security problem. Of greatest concern to humans are algal species that produce potent neurotoxins that can find their way through shellfish and fish to human consumers where they evoke a variety of gastrointestinal and neurological illnesses (paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning (DSP), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), azaspiracid shellfish poisoning (AZP) and ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP)). Worldwide, ciguatoxins are estimated to cause around 50 000 cases of ciguatera fish poisoning annually; neurological effects may last for weeks or even years and one percent of these cases are fatal . Climate change and costal water over enrichment create an enabling environment for harmful algal blooms, which seem to have become more frequent, more intense and more widespread in the past decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the history of the French experience of the Ottoman world and Turkey, this comparative study visits the accounts of early modern travelers for the insights they bring to the field of travel writing. The journals of contemporaries Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Jean Thévenot, Laurent D’Arvieux, Guillaume-Joseph Grelot, Jean Chardin, and Antoine Galland reveal a rich corpus of political, social, and cultural elements relating to the Ottoman Empire at the time, enabling an appreciation of the diverse shapes that travel narratives can take at a distinct historical juncture. Longino examines how these writers construct themselves as authors, characters, and individuals in keeping with the central human project of individuation in the early modern era, also marking the differences that define each of these travelers – the shopper, the envoy, the voyeur, the arriviste, the ethnographer, the merchant. She shows how these narratives complicate and alter political and cultural paradigms in the fields of Mediterranean studies, 17th-century French studies, and cultural studies, arguing for their importance in the canon of early modern narrative forms, and specifically travel writing. The first study to examine these travel journals and writers together, this book will be of interest to a range of scholars covering travel writing, French literature, and history.

Book excerpt: The present monograph offers a detailed and in-depth analysis of the topic of Intelligent Control for Electric Power Systems and Electric Vehicles. First, Nonlinear optimal control and Lie algebra-based control (Control based on approximate linearization and Global linearization-based control concepts) is analyzed. Next, Differential flatness theory and flatness-based control methods (Global linearization-based control with the use of differential flatness theory and Flatness-based control of nonlinear dynamical systems in cascading loops) is treated. Following the control theoretic part Control of DC and PMBLDC electric motors (Control of DC motors through a DC-DC converter and Control of Per- manent Magnet Brushless DC motors) is presented. Besides, Control of VSI-fed three-phase and multi- phase PMSMs (Nonlinear optimal control VSI-fed three-phase PMSMs and Nonlinear optimal control VSI-fed six-phase PMSMs) is explained. Additionally, Control of energy conversion chains based on PMSMs (Control of wind-turbine and PMSM-based electric power unit and Control of a PMSM-driven gas-compression unit) is studied. Besides, Control of energy conversion chains based on Induction Ma- chines (Control of the VSI-fed three-phase induction motor, Control of an induction motor-driven gas compressor and Control of induction generator-based shipboard microgrids) is explained. Next, Control of multi-phase machines in gas processing and power units (Control of gas-compressors actuated by 5-phase PMSMs and Control of 6-phase induction generators in renewable energy units) is introduced, Moreover, Control of Spherical Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors and Switched Reluctance Mo- tors (Control of spherical permanent magnet synchronous motors, Control of switched reluctance motors for electric traction and Adaptive control for switched reluctance motors) is analyzed, Furthermore, Control of traction and powertrains in Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (Control of multi- phase motors in the traction system in electric vehicles and Control of synchronous machines and converters in power-chains of hybrid electric vehicles) is explained, Finally, Control of renewable power units and heat management units (Control of residential microgrids with Wind Generators, Fuel Cells and PVs and Control of heat pumps for thermal management in electric vehicles) it treated. The new control methods which are proposed by the monograph treat the control problem of the complex nonlinear dynamics of electric power systems and electric vehicles without the need for complicated state-space model transformations and changes of state variables. The proposed control schemes are modular and scalable and can be applied to a large class of dynamic models of electric power systems and electric vehicles. They have a clear and easy-to- implement algorithmic part, while they also exhibit a moderate computational load. The proposed control schemes foster the optimized exploitation of renewable energy sources and the reliable integration of renewable energy units in the power grid. Besides, they support the transition to electromotion and the deployment of the use of electric vehicles. The manuscript is suitable for teaching nonlinear control, estimation and fault diagnosis topics with emphasis to electric power systems and to electric vehicle traction and propulsion systems both at late undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
