Book excerpt: Guild of Food Writer’s Awards, Highly Commended in ‘Specialist Subject Cookbook’ category (2022) André Simon Awards shortlisted (2022) "A beautiful book, and one which makes me want to cultivate my garden just as much as scurry to the kitchen." — Nigella Lawson "At its core this book is about cooking, but it's an essential and valuable resource for folk who love to grow their own herbs and cook. Sorted by individual herbs with detailed notes on how to grow and use them, it's going to be a book I will turn to a lot over the years." — Nik Sharma Herb is a plot-to-plate exploration of herbs that majors on the kitchen, with just enough of the simple art of growing to allow the reader to welcome a wealth of home-grown flavours into their kitchen. Author Mark Diacono is a gardener as well as a cook. Packed with ideas for enjoying and using herbs, Herb is much more than your average recipe book. Mark shares the techniques at the heart of sourcing, preparing and using herbs well, enabling you to make delicious food that is as rewarding in the process as it is in the end result. The book explores how to use herbs, when to deploy them, and how to capture those flavours to use when they might not be seasonally available. The reader will become familiar with the differences in flavour intensity, provenance, nutritional benefits and more. Focusing on the familiars including thyme, rosemary, basil, chives and bay, Herb also opens the door to a few lesser-known flavours. The recipes build on bringing your herbs alive – whether that’s a quickly swizzed parsley pesto when short of time on a weekday evening, or in wrapping a crumbly Lancashire cheese in lovage for a few weeks to infuse it with bitter earthiness. With a guide to sowing, planting, feeding and propagating herbs, there are also full plant descriptions and their main culinary affinities. Mark then looks at various ways to preserve herbs including making oils, drying, vinegars, syrups and freezing, before offering over 100 innovative recipes that make the most of your new herb knowledge.

When she called us down for breakfast, we knew there would be homemade caramel rolls and hot cocoa waiting, just for us. In chilly weather, there was always a hearty kettle of vegetable soup or chili simmering on her stove. At dinnertime, the table overflowed with tender chicken and noodles or slow-baked pot roast, buttery mashed potatoes, brown sugar carrots (because she knew we wouldn't eat them, otherwise!) and salads, fresh-picked from her garden. Her cookie jar was filled with our favorite snickerdoodles or chocolate chip cookies, and there was always a frosted layer cake in the cake stand. So many delicious memories! From Grandma's Recipe Box is chock-full of all these recipes and more, shared by cooks like you, handed down through generations and still enjoyed today. We've included easy tips for adding down-home flavor to meals, and for making get-togethers with family & friends special. If you enjoy old-fashioned comfort food, you'll love the recipes in this cookbook! 225 Recipes

Book excerpt: Scorned Testimony, Healed Gift: Revelation 12:11 wants to display a gritty, translucent testimony so that its reader can be healed, delivered, and set free. In chapter 2, "The Womb," rejection was the inheritance of the womb, the seed. The very person that helped make the seed became the shadow of the seed--incubating rejection. The damage was already done in the womb, and everything that her father did didn't suffice. General Motors took her father away when she needed him the most--rejection. Spoiled she was, but that didn't shift the fact of feeding the rejection with rejected love--more rejection. Soon after he left, he found his mischief--more rejection. He was pronounced dead. The beginning of her life, turning topsy-turvy--the bitterness of rejection begins. She trusted one of her classmates. "Her uncle took RR's beauty for his ugliness." Anger, rage, murder--more rejection. She began to find rejected love in all the wrong places--self-rejection. The promiscuous lifestyle was calling her name and she answered. She knew that the rejected love shown was lust at its best, suffering--self-rejection. Entangled in the night lifestyle but loved every bit of its hell. Dropping out of high school, she was over it--more rejection. "What am I doing? Why am I here? My mother didn't raise me like this, but I want to be loved. I want to feel loved. This is not love." The love of money, sex, and drugs was the root of her fantasy. Her body, her sanity, her spiritualism, and her emotions were buried and suffocated by life's quicksand. Satan waited for the right time to target Pernicious. She was feeding the rejection and placed in the gravest positions she has ever gambled with. Scorned Testimony, Healed Gift: Rev. 12:11, the memoir of a survivor through Jesus Christ!

Book excerpt: This cookbook isn't about 'fine dining'. These recipes aren't about piling food on top of itself then decorating the plate with swirls to make it look pretty - although that topic is addressed later in the book in the 'entertaining section'. I'm not totally devoid of a little finesse you know! These recipes are for the everyday inexpensive meal which will appeal to vegetarians and meat eaters alike who appreciate good, tasty home-cooked food. Something for everyone with my own Devonshire take on my own created recipes. Even what comes first on a scone - the jam or the cream? Well you'll just have to buy the book to find out!The first sections are there to help the novice cook who is perhaps faced with empty cupboards and not a clue where to start. There is advice on equipment. My tips for making cooking as easy as possible, some of which more competent cooks might find of interest.I'm old school! I don't faff around with fillets of beef and I don't know many who just happen to have one to hand in the fridge or freezer.I'm not a chef I'm a cook with many years experience and I love food. I love eating it, looking at it, and the kitchen is where I feel most comfortable. But I do admire chefs. They have such special skills, but I bet their roast dinners aren't a patch on mine. And how many of us have eaten in a restaurant, ordered something with a fancy name, been very disappointed and thought "well I could do better myself".So this book is for everyone. Step by step recipes for easy reading. There is a section for vegetarians, vegans, even gluten and dairy free will be able to find a little something for themselves. Of course due to my age I just had to include an 'offal section' but it's at the back of the book so you don't have to see it at all if you don't want to!I don't mess around! It's called 'nanny knows best' for a reason. The reader is instructed, told off even - but it's all for your own good in the end. Trust me nanny really does know best!

Book excerpt: A rumination on our ability to recognize our interconnectedness with all people, that in order to eat a single meal, it takes the whole world to make it. There's something special bubbling in Nanni's big metal pot. And it smells delicious! What ingredients might be inside? When Nanni lifts the lid on her soup, she reveals the whole world inside: from the seeds that grew into vegetables, to the gardeners who lovingly tended to the plants, to the sun, moon, and stars that shone its light above them. And, of course, no meal is complete without a recipe passed down generations of family, topped and finished with Nanni's love. In this tender tale by award-winning author Hunter Liguore and artist Vikki Zhang, readers will marvel at how a community and world can come together to put on an unforgettable meal between a granddaughter and her Nanni.

Something delicious is cooking in the old apartment building on Garden Street! Pilar is mixing gazpacho, Monsieur Ping is stir-frying broccoli, Señora Flores is preparing a pot of beans, and Josef and Rafik are rolling meatballs. Other neighbors are making mini-quiches, baba ganoush, dhal, and peanut butter cookies. When they're all finished cooking everyone gathers in the garden to enjoy a delicious meal and each other's company. Each inviting spread in this storybook offers a recipe from a different culinary tradition. Dishes that kids love, like guacamole, spaghetti, and banana bread are interspersed with others that include less familiar ingredients, such as mirin, tahini, and turmeric. The recipes explain how each dish is made and come with fun and detailed illustrations. Combining simple, fresh flavors with recipes from around the world, this book will nourish and inspire budding cooks while whetting the appetites of their more experienced helpers.
