Book excerpt: A method offering precise control over the synthesis conditions to obtain carbon nanotube (CNT) samples of a single chirality (metallic or semi-conducting) is presented. Using this nanolithographic method of catalyst deposition, the location of CNT growth is also precisely defined. This technique obviates three significant hurdles that are preventing the exploitation of CNT in micro- and nano-devices. Microelectronic applications (e.g., interconnects, CNT gates, etc.) require precisely defined locations and spatial density, as well as precisely defined chirality for the synthesized CNT. Conventional CVD synthesis techniques typically yield a mixture of CNT (semi-conducting and metallic types) that grow at random locations on a substrate in high number density, which leads to extreme difficulty in application integration. Dip Pen Nanolithography (DPN) techniques were used to deposit the catalysts at precisely defined locations on a substrate and to precisely control the catalyst composition as well as the size of the patterned catalyst. After deposition of catalysts, a low temperature Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process at atmospheric pressure was used to synthesize CNT. Various types of catalysts (Ni, Co, Fe, Pd, Pt, and Rh) were deposited in the form of metal salt solutions or nano-particle solutions. Various characterization studies before and after CVD synthesis of CNT at the location of the deposited catalysts showed that the CNT were of a single chirality (metallic or semiconducting) as well as a single diameter (with a very narrow range of variability). Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to characterize the deposited samples before and after the CVD, as was lateral force microscopy (LFM) for determination of the successful deposition of the catalyst material immediately after DPN as well as following the CVD synthesis of the samples. The diameter of the CNT determines the chirality. The diameter of the CNT measured by TEM was found to be consistent with the chirality measurements obtained from Raman Spectroscopy for the different samples. Hence, the results showed that CNT samples of a single chirality can be obtained by this technique. The results show that the chirality of the synthesized CNT can be controlled by changing the synthesis conditions (e.g., size of the catalyst patterns, composition of the catalysts, temperature of CVD, gas flow rates, etc.).

Thus, this thesis aims to develop a suite of techniques, spanning from material synthesis to circuit solutions, compatible with very-large-scale integration (VLSI). Specifically, to enable the real-world engineering of carbon nanotube integrated circuits, this thesis presents (1) wafer-scale aligned CNT growth, (2) wafer-scale CNT Transfer, (3) wafer-scale device and circuit fabrication techniques, and (4) ACCNT, a VLSI-compatible circuit design solution to surmounting the problem of metallic CNTs. These techniques culminated in the successful demonstration of CNT transistors, inverters, and NAND logic gates on a wafer scale. Furthermore, this thesis sheds light on important design considerations for the demonstration of a simple CNT "computer" and suggests a few critical directions for future work in the field of carbon nanotube technology. In contributing the above, this thesis hopes to propel carbon nanotube technology forward towards the vision of robust, large-scale integrated circuits using high-density carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: For two decades, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have captured the attention of the research community, and become one of the flagships of nanotechnology. Due to their remarkable electronic and optical properties, SWCNTs are prime candidates for the creation of novel and revolutionary electronic, medical, and energy technologies. However, a major stumbling block in the exploitation of nanotube-based technologies is the lack of control of nanotube structure (chirality) during synthesis, which is intimately related to the metallic or semiconductor character of the nanotube. Incomplete understanding of the nanotube growth mechanism hinders a rationale and cost-efficient search of experimental conditions that give way to structural (chiral) control. Thus, computational techniques such as density functional theory (DFT), and reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) are valuable tools that provide the necessary theoretical framework to guide the design of experiments. The nanotube chirality is determined by the helicity of the nanotube and its diameter. DFT calculations show that once a small nanotube 'seed' is nucleated, growth proceeds faster if the seed corresponds to a high chiral angle nanotube. Thus, a strategy to gain control of the nanotube structure during chemical vapor deposition synthesis must focus on controlling the structure of the nucleated nanotube seeds. DFT and RMD simulations demonstrate the viability of using the structures of catalyst particles over which nanotube growth proceeds as templates guiding nanotube growth toward desired chiralities. This effect occurs through epitaxial effects between the nanocatalyst and the nanotube growing on it. The effectiveness of such effects has a non-monotonic relationship with the size of the nanocatalyst, and its interaction with the support, and requires fine-tuning reaction conditions for its exploitation. RMD simulations also demonstrate that carbon bulk-diffusion and nanoparticle supersaturation are not needed to promote nanotube growth, hence reaction conditions that increase nanoparticle stability, but reduce carbon solubility, may be explored to achieve nanotube templated growth of desired chiralities. The effect of carbon dissolution was further demonstrated through analyses of calculated diffusion coefficients. The metallic nanocatalyst was determined to be in viscous solid state throughout growth, but with a less solid character during the induction/nucleation stage. Some of these advances have been in the control of the tip which has allowed the scanning speed to be increased from mum/second to mm/second. The engineering of a custom-designed MOSFET built into each microcantilever for individual current control is another notable achievement. Micromachined arrays of probes each with individual control have been demonstrated. One of the most intriguing new aspects is the use of directly-grown carbon nanotubes as robust, high-resolution emitters. In this book the authors concisely and authoritatively describe the historical context, the relevant inventions, and the prospects for eventual manufacturing use of this exciting new technology.
