Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990 Namibia gained its independence after a decades-long struggle against South African rule--and, before that, against German colonialism. This book, the first new scholarly general history of Namibia in two decades, provides a fresh synthesis of these events, and of the much longer pre-colonial period. A History of Namibia opens with a chapter by John Kinahan covering the evidence of human activity in Namibia from the earliest times to the nineteenth century, and for the first time making a synthesis of current archaeological research widely available to non-specialists. In subsequent chapters, Marion Wallace weaves together the most up-to-date academic research (in English and German) on Namibian history, from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. She explores histories of migration, production and power in the pre-colonial period, the changes triggered by European expansion, and the dynamics of the period of formal colonialism. The coverage of German rule includes a full chapter on the genocide of 1904-8. Here, Wallace outlines the history and historiography of the wars fought in central and southern Namibia, and the subsequent mass imprisonment of defeated Africans in concentration camps. The final two chapters analyse the period of African nationalism, apartheid and war between 1946 and 1990. The book's conclusion looks briefly at the development of Namibia in the two decades since independence. A History of Namibia provides an invaluable introduction and reference source to the past of a country that is often neglected, despite its significance in the history of the region and, indeed, for that of European colonialism and international relations. It makes accessible the latest research on the country, illuminates current controversies, puts forward new insights, and suggests future directions for research. The book's extensive bibliography adds to its usefulness for scholar and general reader alike.

South Africa is broken down into a main map section covering all of the countrys areas, where main touring areas are shown in larger scale and much greater detail; and city maps, where all of the main city centres and significant surrounding areas are also shown in detail. Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe are handled in a similar way with a full spread for each country, together with the main tourist areas and city plans. The book also includes a comprehensive index of place names and, where appropriate, an index of city plans. Lastly, photographs of scenic areas accompany the maps where appropriate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we map differing perceptions of the living environment? Mapping the Unmappable? explores the potential of cartography to communicate the relations of Africa's indigenous peoples with other human and non-human actors within their environments. These relations transcend Western dichotomies such as culture-nature, human-animal, natural-supernatural. The volume brings two strands of research - cartography and »relational« anthropology - into a closer dialogue. It provides case studies in Africa as well as lessons to be learned from other continents (e.g. North America, Asia and Australia). The contributors create a deepened understanding of indigenous ontologies for a further decolonization of maps, and thus advance current debates in the social sciences.

Jeremiah spent over two years experiencing this southern African country while a Peace Corps volunteer. He lived with a local family in a rural homestead, giving him the opportunity to experience Namibia like few outsiders have before. With the help from a national network of locals who contributed to this travel guide, let him show you the country he now calls a second home. This book allows visitors to feel like locals while enjoying the indisputable beauty of Namibia. - Gain insight into the people and culture while sleeping in a village campsite. Or splurge at one of Namibia's world-class game lodges. - Partake in the adrenaline activities amongst the world's tallest sand dunes. - Admire the wildlife at Etosha National Park, or explore the less visited parks in the northeast. - From short hikes around Sossusvlei to the daunting 8-day trek through Namib-Naukluft, Namibia is a hiker's paradise. - Step back in time while exploring the colonial city of Luderitz. - Above all, rub elbows and share a laugh with the Namibian people in the many open markets, local eateries, small shebeens, or while travelling on a combie minibus.

Book excerpt: This new thoroughly updated edition of Bradt's Namibia remains the essential guide for a successful visit to this vast country - more than twice the size of Germany but with less than 3% of the population. Written by expert author and long-standing tour specialist Chris McIntyre, this sixth edition incorporates all the most recent changes, including unrivalled coverage of places to stay and eat, from small, personal guesthouses to classy hotels and upmarket game lodges, and detailed information for self-drivers (including personally researched and checked GPS coordinates) as well as for fly-in and guided safaris. There's also in-depth coverage of wildlife and where to see it, including a new full-colour wildlife field guide section, covering mammals, reptiles and amphibians, marine life and birds. Two background chapters covering everything from history and politics to people, ethnic groups and culture are complemented by two chapters on planning, preparation, health and safety and two on the practicalities of getting around and camping and walking in the bush (including canoeing). Helping you to discover Namibia in detail, 13 chapters offer a regional breakdown, from the capital, Windhoek to the Southern Kalahari, Namib desert, Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast, Etosha National Park, and the Kavango and Zambezi regions in the extreme northeast, including excursions into neighbouring Botswana. With sweeping landscapes and empty roads, Namibia has long captured the imaginations of travellers and photographers. Its immense emptiness offers majestic sand dunes, seemingly endless gravel plains, vast tracts of farmland and rugged mountains hiding galleries of ancient Bushman rock art. Add to this the wildlife and the unexpected beauty of the rivers that define the country's northern and southern boundaries, and it's easy to see why Namibia attracts lovers of the great outdoors.
