Download or read book Dude Lit written by Emily Hind and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did men become the stars of the Mexican intellectual scene? Dude Lit examines the tricks of the trade and reveals that sometimes literary genius rests on privileges that men extend one another and that women permit. The makings of the “best” writers have to do with superficial aspects, like conformist wardrobes and unsmiling expressions, and more complex techniques, such as friendship networks, prizewinners who become judges, dropouts who become teachers, and the key tactic of being allowed to shift roles from rule maker (the civilizado) to rule breaker (the bárbaro). Certain writing habits also predict success, with the “high and hard” category reserved for men’s writing and even film directing. In both film and literature, critically respected artwork by men tends to rely on obscenity interpreted as originality, negative topics viewed as serious, and coolly inarticulate narratives about bullying understood as maximum literary achievement. To build the case regarding “rebellion as conformity,” Dude Lit contemplates a wide set of examples while always returning to three figures, each born some two decades apart from the immediate predecessor: Juan Rulfo (with Pedro Páramo), José Emilio Pacheco (with Las batallas en el desierto), and Guillermo Fadanelli (with Mis mujeres muertas, as well as the range of his publications). Why do we believe Mexican men are competent performers of the role of intellectual? Dude Lit answers this question through a creative intersection of sources. Drawing on interviews, archival materials, and critical readings, this provocative book changes the conversation on literature and gendered performance.

Download or read book Spanish for Gay Men (Spanish That Was Never Taught in the Classroom!) written by Jonathan L. Charles and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After thirty plus years teaching high school and college Spanish, there are many things that have not been taught at those levels. Remember how frustrating it was wondering how to say words and phrases about sex, and especially gay sex? So, I decided to compile this book just for you so, you do not have to wonder any more! This book will include just about everything that you have ever wanted to know and much, much more! A great percent of the book was written on my travels to the many Spanish speaking countries and through interviews with countless native speakers. Gay, of course! I have been to Spain four times spending weeks upon weeks in most all of the provinces. Over the past 35 years my travels to Latin America have been more extensive, living and studying in Mexico for over a year with over 40 return trips to most of the entire country exploring the enriching culture of our neighbors to the southern boarder. Within the past 15 years, I have explored the colorful, cultural riches of Guatemala spending months with the gualtemaltecos. I have also had the pleasure of three fantastic, magical adventures to Peru, which were truly spiritual experiences that enlightened and enriched me greatly. Other Spanish speaking countries that I have traveled and explored are Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Panama, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and yes, Argentina. I wish to thank many friends and colleagues for their encouragement to write this book. They have read my work and have given me many helpful suggestions to finalize the process.

Book Synopsis Joaquín Sorolla Nudes by : Cristina Berna
Download or read book Joaquín Sorolla Nudes written by Cristina Berna and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 - died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. Some of the first nudes by Sorolla were gifted to his future father in law, the photographer Antonio Garcia and mother in law Clotilde del Castillo. When Sorolla won a stipend to study in Rome, nudes were obligatory, but his skills developed being able to convey expressions that the jury back in Valencia found morally improper. Sorolla painted two magnificent nudes of his wife, a beautiful tribute to their love. Joaquín Sorolla however, is especially famous for his nudes of happy children and youth on the beach under the dazzling Valencian sun. Please note this book is not a photo-erotic work but part of a bibliography about the painter.
Book Synopsis Female Corpses in Crime Fiction by : Glen S. Close
Download or read book Female Corpses in Crime Fiction written by Glen S. Close and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the central significance of sexualized female corpses in modern and contemporary Hispanic and Anglophone crime fiction. Beginning with the foundational detective fictions of the nineteenth century, it draws from diverse subgenres to describe a transatlantic tradition of necropornography characterized by lascivious interest in female cadavers, dissection, morgues, femicide, and snuff movies. Hard-boiled and police procedural classics from the U.S. and the U.K. are juxtaposed with texts by established Spanish and Spanish American genre masters and with obscure works that prefigure the contemporary transmedial boom in corpse-centered fictions. The rhetoric and aesthetics of necropornographic crime fiction are related to those of popular crime journalism and forensic-science television dramas. This study argues that crime fiction has long fixated disproportionately on the corpses of beautiful young white women and continues to treat their deaths and autopsies as occasions for male visual pleasure, male subjective self-affirmation and male homosocial bonding.
Book Synopsis Learning Spanish Words Through Etymology and Mnemonics by : Yong Huang
Download or read book Learning Spanish Words Through Etymology and Mnemonics written by Yong Huang and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning Spanish Words through Etymology and Mnemonics makes use of etymology to help you remember Spanish words and, failing that, suggests a mnemonic. Combination of these two approaches in one book separates it from other books on the market. The amount and depth of etymology is carefully chosen to be practical and not overwhelm an average reader. The suggested mnemonics aim to help an educated English-speaking person. An adult or young adult who likes learning vocabulary with some word analysis instead of rote memory will find this book to be helpful and a joy to read. With about 3000 words selected from 15000 in the Real Academia Espaola corpus sorted in frequency order, this booklet can be used either as a dictionary or for leisure reading. The hint provided for each word is particularly helpful for short-term memory needed in taking an exam, while the etymological and cultural information will serve you for years to come. Book Synopsis The Male Gazed by : Manuel Betancourt
Download or read book The Male Gazed written by Manuel Betancourt and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring deep dives into thirst traps, drag queens, Antonio Banderas, and telenovelas—all in the service of helping us reframe how we talk about (desiring) men—this insightful memoir-in-essays is as much a coming of age as a coming out book Manuel Betancourt has long lustfully coveted masculinity—in part because he so lacked it. As a child in Bogotá, Colombia, he grew up with the social pressure to appear strong, manly, and, ultimately, straight. And yet in the films and television he avidly watched, Betancourt saw glimmers of different possibilities. From the stars of telenovelas and the princes of Disney films to pop sensation Ricky Martin and teen heartthrobs in shows like Saved By the Bell, he continually found himself asking: Do I want him or do I want to be him? The Male Gazed grapples with the thrall of masculinity, examining its frailty and its attendant anxieties even as it focuses on its erotic potential. Masculinity, Betancourt suggests, isn’t suddenly ripe for deconstruction—or even outright destruction—amid so much talk about its inherent toxicity. Looking back over decades’ worth of pop culture’s attempts to codify and reframe what men can be, wear, do, and desire, this book establishes that to gaze at men is still a subversive act. Written in the spirit of Hanif Abdurraqib and Olivia Laing, The Male Gazed mingles personal anecdotes with cultural criticism to offer an exploration of intimacy, homoeroticism, and the danger of internalizing too many toxic ideas about masculinity as a gay man.
