Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is simultaneously a theoretical study in morphosyntax and an in-depth empirical study of Hebrew. Based on Hebrew data, the book defends the status of the root as a lexical and phonological unit and argues that roots, rather than verbs or nouns, are the primitives of word formation. A central claim made throughout the book is the role of locality in word formation, teasing apart word formation from roots and word formation from existing words syntactically, semantically and phonologically. The book focuses on Hebrew, a language with rich verb morphology, where both roots and noun- and verb-creating morphology are morphologically transparent. The study of Hebrew verbs is based on a corpus of all Hebrew verb-creating roots, offering, for the first time, a survey of the full array of morpho-syntactic forms seen in the Hebrew verb. While the focus of this study is on how roots function in word-formation, a central chapter studies the information encoded by the Hebrew root, arguing for a special kind of open-ended value, bounded within the classes of meaning analyzed by lexical semanticists. The book is of wide interest to students of many branches of linguistics, including morphology, syntax and lexical semantics, as well as of to students Semitic languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ’progress’ is a modern Western notion that life is always improving and advancing toward an ideal state. It is a vital modern concept which underlies geographic explorations and scientific and technological inventions as well as the desire to harness nature in order to increase human beings’ ease and comfort. With the advent of Western colonization and to the great detriment of the colonized, the notion of progress began to perniciously and pervasively permeate across cultures. This book details the impact of the notion of progress on the Nagas and their culture. The interaction between the Nagas and the West, beginning with British military conquest and followed by American missionary intrusion, has resulted in the gradual demise of Naga culture. It is almost a cliché to assert that since the colonial contact, the long evolved Naga traditional values are being replaced by Western values. Consequences are still being felt in the lack of sense of direction and confusion among the Nagas today. Just like other Indigenous Peoples, whose history is characterized by traumatic cultural turmoil because of colonial interference, the Nagas have long been engaged in self-shame, self-negation and self-sabotage.

Thanzauva, and Wati Longchar - with the Western theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who suffered martyrdom under the Nazi dictatorship in Germany. Negotiating between Bonhoeffer's political approach and Naga cultural identity, Bendangjungshi develops a liberating ecclesiology for Naga Christians, who have been suffering under Indian military occupation since the withdrawal of the British colonizers from Nagaland. Book excerpt: In 1937, Ursula Bower visited Nagaland at the invitation of a friend, and on a dispensary tour encountered the Naga people. She was so taken was with their striking dignity, tribal pride and unique culture that she arranged to live among them to write an anthropological study. But she became more than an observer – living alone among them, Ursula was integrated into their village life, becoming their figurehead when in 1944 the Japanese invaded the jungles of Nagaland from Burma. The Nagas turned to her for leadership and with the support of General Slim, her Naga guides were armed and trained to patrol and repel the Japanese incursions. The Nagas' courage and loyalty were duly recognised, and after the conflict Ursula, with Naga support, went on to run a jungle training school for the RAF. Later, with her husband, Tim Betts as Political Officer, she worked among the volatile tribes of the remote Apa Tani Valley, bordering Tibet. Following the Independence of India in 1947, Ursula returned to her highland roots, but to her death in 1988, her experiences among the Naga people shaped and directed her life.

In this book, William Buck has succeeded better than anyone else in conveying the spirit of the original. The task of presenting a faithful image of the original text, its metaphysical nuances as well as its chronological sequence the world`s largest epic in a small book is a stupendous task.Mainly as a narration, the version of William Buck will serve as an interesting and complete tale to the English speaking reader. Valmiki was called the Adikavi or first poet of Sanskrit literature and some of his remarkable talent shines forth in the English rendering. The reader will find pleasure in reading it aloud to himself or the others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the explosive story of the underground movement in Nagaland never written before. It is an investigative report of the secret trails where the dew never dries, a trail which ended far beyond the Indian borders, snaking into the monsoon-soaked jungles of Kachin, where men like Zewtu fought and died unsung. These were the forests of no return where men like Kaito, Zhukiye. Mowu, Zuheto and Thinoselie embraced death often and survived. You are about to enter ‘terra incognita’ on the fog-bound heights of the Arakans where many a platoon commander fell, their mission reports unwritten. It is the only book to offer interpretations on: Meikhel: Three of the hallowed stones, of which two fell, according to a Naga prophecy. Oking: Top-secret mobile Headquarters of the Guerrillas. Ahza: A decree which emanated from Oking and could bring death of traitors. Peking: The Chinese connection which made an effort to convert Nagaland into a mini-Vietnam. Kuknalim: “Long live the land” was how the Guerrillas greeted each other, while they talked with bullets. Tatar Hoho: The underground Parliament where democracy prevailed. Alee Command: The Foreign Legion - will it strike again? Kachin: Where the south-east Asian guerrilla movements converge to co-ordinte. In The Night of the Guerrillas, there are no villains - the contending sides were caught between the indomitable and the inevitable. The destiny of the Nagas must have always lain with India while the luckless revolutionaries were searching it elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Shashtipurti is a milestone that marks celebration and gratitude for the life given by God. It’s a pointer to a new journey. A pointer to spend the rest of one’s life reflecting inward, discovering self, and the person behind the persona. It’s a wake-up call to lose yourself so you can find yourself. After 60 years, all the planets in the Zodiac come to the same position as the actual date of birth of the individual. It’s another signal from the universe to return to our innocence. Sixty years is a long time in the life of an individual, and in my family, the completion of 60 years is celebrated as an important milestone. My eldest brother did a homam and pooja in our house while my second brother was fortunate to celebrate the shashtipurti (completion of 60 years) in a very traditional manner under the able aegis of his knowledgeable father-in-law. I also like the way we celebrated the shashtipurti of my second sister-in-law. We went to a veda patashala, performed poojas for about four hours amidst the chanting of thirty and odd young, bright students of the school, followed by lunch with about sixty veda pandits. Vedas tell us that sashtipurthi can be performed through out the year, the month, or the day a person completes their sixty years on the earth and the scriptures give full freedom to celebrate this occassion in which ever way it gives us peace and in whichever place is appropriate — at a temple, by the river, or at home. “Janmaabde, Janmamaasecha Swajanmadivase tathaa, Janmarshe chaiva kartavyaa santi rugrarathaahvayaa, Devaalaye nadeeteere swagruhe vaa subhasthale.” Inspired by my brother, I seriously considered celebrating my shashtipurti by going to a veda patashala. However, I am not a ritualistic person and so changed my plans to celebrate my shashtipurti to reflect my personality – by celebrating the lives of sixty people who are very close to my heart by writing about them and publishing a book. Now that I have a goal, I started the process of identifying and jotting down names and anecdotes of the sixty people in my life who have made me what I am today. All of these people have influenced, inspired, and enlightened me simply by their association. Each one of them has taught me invaluable life lessons, and have made my stay on earth a worthy experience. I will forever be indebted to them. My biggest dilemma in this process of identifying the sixty people is being perceived as not showing enough appreciation for everyone else who is important to me. It is just coincidental that I have my sixtieth birthday coming up, and I wanted to acknowledge sixty of the most important people in my life. Needless to say, there are many people outside this list who are very dear to me and if you are reading this book, chances are, you are one of them too. This is my first major attempt at writing a book, and I hope I am able to make the time you are taking to read it worth it.
