Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nadir Shah In the course of the eighteenth century, a Turkoman soldier of fortune, Nadir Kuli, better known to the world as Nadir Shah, raised Persia to the first place among Oriental powers; and notwithstanding the insane hatred which during the latter part of his life he showed towards his sensitive and quick-witted people, who had fought well for him, he is regarded by Persians of the present day as one of the greatest of their national heroes. This book is an attempt to make his character and times more familiar than they are to English readers. After some doubt, I have written it in the form of a romance. I have done this partly with the hope of giving it more life and colour, partly because the existing accounts of Nadir Shah, whether Persian or European, are hardly the material from which exact history could now be written. Many controversies have arisen even about the career of Napoleon. Considering that Nadir Shah spent his life fighting in Asia, and died before Napoleon was born, it is natural that in his case the facts should sometimes have become hopelessly obscured. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II When the King had entered the tent in which he usually slept, he took his seat on the takht prepared for him, leant back on his cushions, and remained for a few minutes in silent thought. The remembrance of the scene he had just witnessed seemed to be pleasing to him, for a faint smile came into his face. He drew the dagger from his waistband and looked at it curiously. 'A woman's toy, ' he said to himself, ' but she would have used it, and it was enough to frighten two men. Men! She is more of a man than either of them! How beautiful she looked!' He put the dagger down on the takht beside his axe, and paused a moment. Then he called for a servant. 'Send me the Agha Bashi.' The Agha Bashi or chief eunuch came at once. He was a tall negro, with a sad but pleasant face. In all the great King's following there was perhaps no one whom he trusted so thoroughly, and with reason, for the man was worthy of trust. He had the fidelity of his race for those he loved, and he loved Nadir, who had rescued him from ill-treatment some years before and had given him service. A quick eye for character and a half-generous, half-calculating kindness to men who were in trouble had won Nadir many friends. He never did a wiser thing than when he promoted the grateful African to the charge of his Anderun, a charge which meant close attachment to his person, and considerable power. 'You know what happened just now when I was looking at the Indian women.' The negro bent his head. 'I know. I saw it all.' 'The girl is beautiful.' 'Beautiful as a Peri.' 'I want to see her alone.' The negro looked troubled. 'Ba chashm--on my eyes be it, but' 'Well, what is it? You think there is danger, that the Indians have sent her here to do me evil?' and Nadir laughed..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nadir the Persian: And Other Poems To My Wife The river flows, And the quick time goes, But together, and hand in hand, We will follow the stream, Through the gloom and the gleam, Till by the great sea we stand. We will give up our breath Together to death. Ah, dearest, do not weep! For weal or for woe, While the surges flow, Together we'll sleep our long sleep. And when from His halls The Great God calls, Together we'll wake and rise, Up out of the night, Up into the light Of the Throne and Paradise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kuzzilbash, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale of Khorasan During a residence of many years in the upper Provinces of India, I had devoted much of my leisure to certain investigations of an Historical nature, connected with the period when the cele brated Nader Shah, Monarch of Persia, succeeded in the most gigantic of his undertakings, and ac quired, for a time, military possession of the noble and venerable Capital of the Moghul Empire. In pursuit of this object, I had sedulously collected all the mss. And other papers within my reach, that promised to bear upon the subject; and applied much time and labour, often indeed to very little purpose, in ascertaining their contents.
