Author Sheila Skaff describes how the major issues facing the region before World War I, from the relatively slow pace of modernization to the desire for national sovereignty, shaped local practices in film production, exhibition, and criticism. She goes on to analyze local film production, practices of spectatorship in large cities and small towns, clashes over language choice in intertitles, and controversy surrounding the first synchronized sound experiments before World War I. Skaff depicts the creation of a national film industry in the newly independent country, the golden years of the silent cinema, the transition from silent to sound film—and debates in the press over this transition—as well as the first Polish and Yiddish “talkies.” She places particular importance on conflicts in majority-minority relations in the region and the types of collaboration that led to important films such as The Dybbuk and The Ghosts. The Law of the Looking Glass: Cinema in Poland, 1896–1939 is the first comprehensive history of the country’s film industry before World War II. This history is characterized by alternating periods of multilingual, multiethnic production, on the one hand, and rejection of such inclusiveness, on the other. Through it all, however, runs a single unifying thread: an appreciation for visual imagery.

Not only has this theme long been among the Church's most oft-repeated messages, but in everything from sermons to articles in the Catholic press, it has been consistently emphasized that the commandment extends to all humanity. Yet, on numerous occasions in the twentieth century, Catholics have established alliances with nationalist groups promoting ethnic exclusivity, anti-Semitism, and the use of any means necessary in an imagined "struggle for survival." While some might describe this as mere hypocrisy, Faith and Fatherland analyzes how Catholicism and nationalism have been blended together in Poland, from Nazi occupation and Communist rule to the election of Pope John Paul II and beyond. It is usually taken for granted that Poland is a Catholic nation, but in fact the country's apparent homogeneity is a relatively recent development, supported as much by ideology as demography. To fully contextualize the fusion between faith and fatherland, Brian Porter-cs-concepts like sin, the Church, the nation, and the Virgin Mary-ultimately showing how these ideas were assembled to create a powerful but hotly contested form of religious nationalism. By no means was this outcome inevitable, and it certainly did not constitute the only way of being Catholic in modern Poland. Nonetheless, the Church's ongoing struggle to find a place within an increasingly secular European modernity made this ideological formation possible and gave many Poles a vocabulary for social criticism that helped make sense of grievances and injustices.

Porter argues instead that the penetration of communal hatred and social discipline into the rhetoric of nationalism must be explained, not merely assumed. Book excerpt: The term 'professionalization' arouses controversies in academic discussion, let alone the issue of professionalization of journalism. Journalism considerably departs from the ideal model of professionalization. There is no structured knowledge that directly applies to journalists, although we can talk about defined skills and the practical principles of the journalist's profession. Considering the process of the professionalization of journalism, we can indicate three significant determinants, namely professional autonomy, separate professional standards (self-regulation principles) and serving the public interest. However, it is particularly important to ask about the condition of the journalist's profession nowadays. The ongoing technological revolution on the one hand, and the political and legal transformations accompanied by market trends, such as the tabloidization of the media (so-called infotainment) first and foremost, and citizen journalism on the other, have all generated great doubts about the status of journalists. This calls for a redefinition of the professional position and role of journalists in modern societies. All these transformations may pose a serious threat to the model of traditional journalism and the social and professional position of journalists. The book introduced here consists of four parts, presenting various aspects of professionalization of journalism. The first part treats of diverse topics concerning the essence of this issue, as well as the legal status of journalist's profession. The second part, features texts devoted to the issues of digital media. Part three deals with the disturbing phenomenon of hate speech. The main theme of the last part of the book concerns the issue of lobbying in the process of establishing intellectual property rights. The texts presented here have been written by scholars in the fields of law, media studies and political science on the one hand and practitioners (journalists) fromseveral countries of Europe on the other. The editors hope that the publication will contribute to the ongoing discussion concerning both the journalists' and journalism status, in the era of dynamic technological transformation.
