Book excerpt: A young woman is found with her throat slashed on the grounds of the biggest charity event in Texas. The people in power know a murder at such an esteemed event could garner the wrong kind of attention from an unenlightened public that the charity has come to depend on to fill its treasure chest. Immediate action has to be taken and they go into a mode of subterfuge and misdirection to cover up a crime. Detective David Storm, a defeated cop slowly deteriorating in place as he awaits his pending retirement, is assigned to lead the investigation. Haunted by addiction and depression due to his own wife's inexplicable death, he is hand picked by the establishment to play the role of the patsy to yet another unsolved crime. Armed with only his friends, detective Storm relentlessly digs for answers, all the while fighting the obstructions of City Hall, the charity officials, and even his own department, only to find that there's a pattern of multiple slayings-a series of crimes more sinister than ever imagined . . . As the clock ticks and another body is found, will this unlikely champion be able to vanquish his personal demons and stop a cunning killer?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At seventeen, Mary Johnson saw a photo of Mother Teresa on the cover of TIME magazine, and experienced her calling. Eighteen months later she entered a convent in the South Bronx, to begin her religious training. Not without difficulty, this boisterous, independent-minded teenager eventually adapted to the sisters' austere life of poverty and devotion, but beneath the white-and-blue sari an ordinary woman faced the struggles we all share, with the desires of love and connection, meaning and identity. During her years as a Missionary of Charity, Mary Johnson rose quickly through the ranks and came to work alongside Mother Teresa. Mary grapped with her faith, her desires for intimacy, the politics of the order and her complicated relationship with Mother Teresa. Finally, she made the hard, life-changing decision to leave the order to find her own path, and eventually to leave the Church altogether. The story of this compellingly honest woman will speak to anyone who has ever grappled with the mysteries and wonders of life and faith.

Book excerpt: All Elizabeth hoped to do was to rekindle the love in her marriage. Yet despite ignoring her social obligations and immersing herself in her husband's important work, somehow this only made things worse. Her last hope is her unborn child, a source of unrequited love to fill the void inside her. But that too is taken from her. How? Why? Her doctor avoids her. Her husband berates her. And there are whispers--whispers telling of things that cannot be. Yet the more Elizabeth ignores the rumors, the more they press on her to seek the truth, so she concocts a plan to find it. To find it and hopefully exonerate both Robert and herself. To discover the reason she's lost all that's dear to her. And she will, even if she must venture into Whitechapel to do it.

With only her kindly nurse, Rose, and her cat Mr Tompkins for company, she knows very little of the outside world - or of her own family's shadowy past. What she does know is that she is NEVER to go outside unsupervised. And she is NEVER to over-excite herself, because of the mysterious 'condition' that she has been told she suffers from. But Charity has a secret of her own. All her life, she has had the same strange dream - a dream of a dark corridor, hidden somewhere in the house. Then, one day, Charity stumbles across the corridor. It leads to a door . . . and suddenly she realises things are not quite what they seem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Understanding the spiritual meanings on which the practices of Islam are based, opens up the vastness of the inner life. Even though young Muslim children are not yet obliged to fast or pay zakat, the virtues and spiritual dimensions on which these are based can easily be introduced and comprehended even by five-year olds. Imam al-Ghazali's stories and metaphors offer an effective way for parents to communicate with their children, in a language which can be used and directly related to the occurrences within everyday life. In the following two books of the Ihya, such virtues as generosity, gratitude, selflessness, reflection, self-discipline, patience, honesty, moderation, and trust in God's loving wisdom are no longer abstract concepts but can be clearly seen instead as urgent and absolutely relative to each individual. We are indeed blessed to have Imam al-Ghazali's systematic presentation of aspects belonging to the inner sunna and his detailed map for guarding and perfecting our innate and noble nature. Table of Contents: Introduction to Imam al-Ghazali's The Mysteries of Charity and Fasting for Children by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Chapter One: Why Are Some People Rich and Others Poor? Chapter Two: At the Family Farm Chapter Three: Five Necessary Parts of Charity Chapter Four: The First Inward Manner of Giving Charity Chapter Five: Something You Should Be Sure Not to Do and Other Inward Duties Chapter Six: The Story of the King and His Servants and The Fifth Inner Duty Chapter Seven: Going More Deeply into Greed, Pride, Conceit, Generosity, and Humility and The Sixth Inner Duty Chapter Eight: The Example of Grandfather and His Pure Orange Blossom Honey and The Seventh Inner Duty Chapter Nine: Knowing Who Most Deserves to Receive and The Final Inner Requirement Chapter Ten: Hiking Through the Forest Chapter Eleven: Reaching the Summit Sadaqa - Voluntary Charity - Its Virtues & Manners"

Book excerpt: Book 8, Mysteries of Charity, is the eighth of the thirty-seven books of Ibn al-Arabi's greatest work al-Futuhat al-Makkiyah, the Openings of Makkah. The Greatest Teacher, al-shaykh al-akbar, Ibn al-Arabi dictated to his close friends this work of over 10,000 manuscript pages depicting the extraordinary vision of the Youth he encountered while circling the Kaabah in Makkah.Despite its clear provenance as a completely accurate work, from the hand and mind of its transcriber, and its reputation through the centuries as the most significant and profound reflection of Islamic thought, the Futuhat al-Makkiyah has never been translated from the original classical Arabic in its entirety. The first complete critical edition of twelve volumes was produced in 2010 by Abd al-Aziz Sultan al-Mansoub, after eleven years of intense study of the original manuscripts. From 2012 this translator has been exclusively working on translating this work in order to produce the first complete translation into English of the Futuhat al-Makkiyah.The Futuhat al-Makkiyah is no conventional religious or philosophical text; it is sui generis. Although the work has been described as a vast collection of "metaphysics, cosmology, spiritual anthropology, psychology, and jurisprudence," it is first an integral description of a vision. In order to depict what he saw, Ibn al-Arabi draws on different kinds of language: legal and poetic, geometric and theological. Because these languages are difficult, and especially so for readers removed by eight centuries in time, scholars tend to emphasize the difficulty, even impossibility, of translation--or even conveying--this text (especially without omitting troublesome passages or references). Thus scholarly presentations are limited to excerpts and selections. The translator has benefitted from some of the top Arabic language experts, including Hany Ibrahim, Karim Crow, Pablo Beneito, and Atif Khalil. The critical editor Sidi al-Mansoub has been generous to me with his guidance and instruction. I am solely responsible for mistakes, and the publication of this on-going project as a preprint is to encourage readers to help me improve the work.
