Book Synopsis The Alaska Bush Pilot Chronicles by : Mort Mason
Download or read book The Alaska Bush Pilot Chronicles written by Mort Mason and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of Flying the Alaska Wild marveled at Mort Mason’s true tales of braving the elements at the extremes in a Piper Super Cub. But the bush pilot, adventurer, and raconteur was just beginning, and in this book he revisits his most memorable moments of flying by the seat of his pants through blizzards and white-outs, on assignments at times hazardous and sometimes simply whacky, always with a sense of humor and due respect for the limitless wilds of Alaska beneath his wings. The world of a bush pilot really is the final frontier, and for thirty years Mort Mason was there, clocking enough heart-stopping miles to make most life-stories utterly incredible. In The Alaska Bush Pilot Chronicles Mason recounts more of his unlikely adventures in the face of Alaska’s unforgiving weather and terrain. His stories gives readers the rare chance to experience the disappearing thrills and challenges of meeting the American frontier on its own unyielding terms.

Book excerpt: Dear reader: This book has no chapter headings and *** is used for logical breaks in the conversations. This story is a flow of consciousness from a man, who started out as an auto mechanic, realized his dream of being a Pilot Captain, grew old (as we all do), and searched for meaning in his life. This is his story as told to me over the years. My former name was Tim before I pulled up stakes and immigrated to Israel where I translated my names into Hebrew (David Ramati being the translation of Tim Bratvold) so he refers to me in here as Tim. Donald is part big bother and surrogate father. There is 12 years between us and he never had much to do with me until I was in my early teens when he became my hunting, fishing and safari buddy, philosophy lecturer, and an all-around interesting part of my life. This continued until I joined the USMC and left for Vietnam. My mother was shot to death while I was there in-country and, little by little, we drifted apart. Some of this was because of our mutual grief, and the certainty that an epoch had ended. Donald went on to become a professional pilot and moved to Alaska with his family, and I drifted until I built a family of my own and moved to Israel...but that is another story. We did keep in contact over the years by snail mail, and with the advent of the internet and skype, our communications improved a thousand-fold. I could have called it an autobiography, but the word 'biography' is better suited since it is really a story of his journeys from which he returns, like Ulysses, an old man with memories of former glories. His spirit exemplifies the story of one man's search for a dream, a dream only possible in the America of his times. I have been fortunate to share a part of his life and his story:

Soul Business: A Search for God at Work in Our Work expresses the roller coaster ride of two professionals who left management positions in corporate America and decided to make it on their own as entrepreneurs. Soul Business explores their journeys of faith and the Twelve Faith-Based Entrepreneurial Qualities that Laura and Paul believe are essential to blending work and spirituality. They write, “We found that working independently in today’s business landscape can be a lonely and frightening experience. Those that make it have faith—not only in themselves, but in something greater than themselves. We learned to follow our own internal compass for direction, rather than somebody else’s barometer of success. We discovered that the business we’re in is soul business.”

Book excerpt: Fifty Years Fly By is the concluding book in the Adventure Trilogy by Randy; former Green Beret, 7th Army Parachute Team Member, Alaskan Bush Pilot, and Surgical Physician Assistant. He began flying at 16 on the farm and learned mountain aviation in Utah. While in Alaska Lippincott took a four-year hiatus from orthopedic surgery and piloted 5,000 grueling hours in the Bush, where the company cut off was 50 below zero! These are the riveting actual accounts collected over a half century of how a boy from Nebraska found his way to the wilds of Alaska. It is a story of daring and excitement that began on a grass field in the Midwest where the basics of the stick and rudder were ingrained in a young man. They are stories of hard work, perseverance, experimentation, and stretching the boundaries, which in the end add up to the journey of a lifetime. This volume describes the family flying stories that started it all; however, it is also the timeless story of a father and son who celebrated aviation together. Randy tells about the fearless trials he suffered while earning a position for the most severe on-the-job training in North America in the harsh and extreme winter environment north of the Arctic Circle during the winter of 1989. The stress of being an Alaskan Bush Pilot is recounted in vivid detail along with the daily struggles of an Air Taxi Pilot. I was an aviator of the enduring purple twilightan allure that holds me in its grip to this day.
Download or read book Bush Pilot written by Arnold Griese and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Gillam Sr's story is presented with new clarity and balance. Bush Pilot describes a private, introspective man torn between family responsibilities and his unrelenting drive to pursue his goals in aviation. Early Alaska aviation did not rely on the actions of one single pilot but succeeded through the shared strength and will of many. Yet Gillam made significant contributions. The facts and details surrounding Gillam's adventures and some times "edge of the seat" flights keep readers involved from the first page through the controversy overshadowing his final tragic flight. Bush Pilot is an Alaska aviation adventure. Bush Pilot offers thought-provoking insights into Alaska's aviation history, and introduced me to its courageous and colorful pilots and other interesting characters -- many of whom had once been only names in the news during my growing up years here in the Interior. Val Scullion: Alaska grown. Bush Pilot is a well-researched account of an Alaska Pioneer aviator whose natural instincts and high degree of self-confidence help explain his success in off-airport operation and weather and instrument flying. Tom Hetherington: lifelong Alaskan, private pilot, and Alaska aviation history aficionado. In a book appealing to novice and experienced aviation buffs alike, Arnold Griese has brought new light to the life and legend of Harold Gillam. Full of new details about the famed Alaska bush pilot, Bush Pilot serves to demystify the events in Gillam's life while providing an excellent account of the early days in Alaska aviation history. Kenny Williams: a 20,000 hour airline pilot uses his Cessna 172 to reach prime hunting and fishing spots.

Ever since aviation came to Alaska planes have been far more important than cars or truck to the residents of the far-flung bush communities. In Cowboys of the Sky: The Story of Alaska's Bush Pilots, humorist and historian Steven C. Levi takes you on a wild ride through the heyday of aviation in Alaska, from the golden years, before federal regulations curbed the more dangerous and outlandish flying practices, all the way to the present. Through photographs and anecdotes, you'll meet brave and colorful pilots, the true cowboys of the sky who carved the face of America's Last Frontier.
