But there was a time he almost had it all.... Five years earlier, seeking his share of the American Dream, Dave tried his hand at entrepreneurship and sank every penny he and his wife owned into Daves Bar, a former barbershop on Atlantas historic Auburn Avenue. The business flourished, and he believed hed finally achieved his Dream. He bought his wife, Linda, expensive presents, and sent her on luxurious vacations while he stayed behind to watch over the bar. There was little choice there, since the bars Auburn Avenue location attracted an eclectic but motley crew of customers who always required a close eye, as well as the occasional bartender who either stole or shared the bars alcoholic bounty with their family and friends. Life is marvelous, Dave thought. And life was terrific . . . until a swanky new competitor opened across the street. Within a few short months, Daves Bar became a statistic. Now, six months later, unemployed and with the big Five-O fast creeping up on him, Dave reads the want ads in the local newspaper and fends off his wifes frequent worried questions. Within four months, he quits two jobs he feels are beneath him. Money worries stress his marriage to the point of open conflict. As the bills mount, so does the tension. Linda, a Southern Belle and an assertive buxom blonde, is as supportive as shes able to be, but is fast losing patience. The manager of a staffing agency, shes the only one bringing home the bacon right now. Fed up with chiding Dave for not trying harder to find steady work, she offers him an entry-level job with her company. He doesnt want a job his wife found for him, plus he doesnt like or trust her boss, Charlie, a rich playboy Linda dated before they were married. Deeply conflicted over what life even means anymore, his marriage strained to breaking, Dave leaves to visit his family in North Carolina, hoping to find answers to the unanswerable. The Delivery Man is a coming-to-middle age story populated by eccentric, fascinating characters and a window into whether a man can reclaim the good life he once knew before its too late.

Book Synopsis Conversations with Quijote by : Arturo Lewis Jaramillo
Download or read book Conversations with Quijote written by Arturo Lewis Jaramillo and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love is the most consequential of all human emotions. To experience it is elation; to express it is to speak from the heart; to receive it, the finest moment; to lose it, the worst day; and to write about it is poetry. This book is a literary quest for love in its most idyllic form and the author’s journey, as a young man, to reconcile the love he discovers with reality. Using verse and prose in contrasting styles in collaboration with his imaginary sixteenth century mentor, the famous Don Quijóte de La Mancha, the author explores the depth and breadth of love in a literary style quite unlike most anthologies of poetry. Set in the late 1960s, the poet’s work explores a succession of romantic relationships influenced, pointedly, by the “love generation,” its freedoms, imagination and contradictions. As the author describes it, “it’s a series of love stories told, day by day, in a most unique and lyrical way.” While the pace, distractions and complexities of present-day America lessen our ability to be in love, Conversations with Quijóte reawakens the reader to the sensations and sensibilities of true romance, its rewards and consequences.
Download or read book The Other Fifties written by Joel Foreman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Edsel to Eisenhower, from Mau Mau to Doris Day, and from Ayn Rand to Elvis, contributors to The Other Fifties topple the decade's already weakened image as a time of unprecedented peace, prosperity, and conformity. Representing the fifties as a period of cultural transformation, contributors reveal the gradual "unmaking" of traditions and value systems that took place as American culture prepared itself for the more easily observed cultural turbulence of the 1960s. Well known contributors demonstrate how television, the novel, the Hollywood movie, the Broadway musical, and rock and roll assaulted midcentury American attitudes toward sexuality, race, gender, and class, so altering public sensibilities that what was novel or shocking in the fifties seems tame or even downright difficult to grasp today. They also rebut the widely held view that 1950s consumerism led to cultural homogeneity, replacing this view with a picture of robust popular markets that defied conservative controls and actively subverted conventional norms and values. Brushing away the haze of an era, The Other Fifties will help readers understand the decade not as placid or repressed, but as a time when emancipatory desires struggled to articulate themselves.
Download or read book Us and Them written by John Robert Arnone and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Us and Them chronicles the depth to which Canada and Canadians were part of The Beatles’ story—their formation, growth and break up. Entertaining and well researched, Us and Them places John, Paul, George and Ringo as a band and as solo artists in a uniquely Canadian setting; it blends rich stories, facts, analysis, and even dabbles in several plausible but little known accounts that create a new ripple in The Beatles’ history. After consuming Us and Them, readers will never again listen to albums Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the White Album, or singles “Come Together”, “Give Peace a Chance”, “All Things Must Pass”, “Imagine” and “Mull of Kintyre” without thinking about these masterworks in a Canadian context. Us and Them is a thorough account of the Fab Four's relationship with Canada, filling an important gap in their narrative and discography.

Book Synopsis Pieces of My Path by : Thomas Riddell
Download or read book Pieces of My Path written by Thomas Riddell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-08-28 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the years move on I think many of us don't really consider the subtle but sometimes enormouschanges that can take place in the human mind over the course of time. We often hear people say, 'I'd love to be eighteen again and know what I know now'¦' but how many of us would want to put our past lives out there for the whole world to see; especially when the path that we've walked was chest deep in pain and turmoil? It was in January of 2006 that I decided to write PIECES OF MY PATH. What precipitated my putting finger to keyboard was located in a cardboard box, stashed away and wrapped in a black garbage bag high upon a shelf in the guest bedroom closet. I was thinking a lot about my 'dark days' and how far I had come from those crippling depressed times in the early 90's so I decided to pull down that black bag filled with memories and take a peek back into a bleak, yet rewarding, past.

That single-minded purpose helps him forget the fact he hates the jungle as he leads his Special Forces team in search of Honduran drug lord Santiago Saldana. His quarry eludes him, but the woman left behind in the compound is the next best thing. Saldana’s mistress—an American woman who clearly puts her own pleasure over right and wrong. As they push through the tangled jungle dodging bullets and ambushes, Alex fights his growing respect for Isabella’s determination—and an attraction that’s impossible to resist, whatever she’s done. But Saldana never lets go of what’s his. And betrayal is his deadliest weapon. Beneath the Surface In retrospect, perhaps archaeologist Mallory Reeves shouldn’t have delivered the divorce papers to her estranged husband mere weeks before her marriage to another man. She knew seeing Adrian again would stir up memories, but she didn’t expect so many of them to be good, not after the mess they both made three years ago. She also didn’t expect to want to stay at the dig site on the Yucatan Peninsula. But the lure of the ancient ship and, yes, her sexy ex provide more of a draw than the white picket fence she thought she wanted. Marine archaeologist Adrian Reeves has good reason to trust no one. His former partner—and former best friend—made off with his last archaeological find. And his wife left him, frustrated by his obsession for professional revenge. Now both Mallory and his nemesis have returned, and it can’t be an accident that they’ve turned up in the middle of the most important excavation of his career. Seeing her again unearths old pain—and rekindles never-forgotten desire. Now he has to decide if he can trust Mallory again. More importantly, if he can trust himself with her. Hot Shot Peyton Michaels expected her assignment to be simple—write an article about everyday heroes. Heroes like Hot Shot firefighter Gabe Cooper. She never expected to find herself running up a mountain, a wildfire nipping at her heels, her life in his hands. And she never expected to be drawn to Gabe. After the loss of her husband in the line of duty, the last thing she wants is to fall in love with yet another man who routinely puts his life at risk. Gabe has had enough of women who want to make him into someone he’s not. Women like his ex, who couldn’t handle the heat of his job. Like Peyton, who sees him as a hero when he’s just a man doing a job. Except time after time, the pesky reporter proves her mettle. And gets deeper under his skin. But there’s an arsonist at work, and danger is closing in with the speed of a raging brush fire. Peyton and Gabe have to dig deep for what it takes to be a real hero—to find the courage to reach out and grab a forever kind of love. Before it’s too late.
