Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Path to Being a Better Man Many modern men are consumed by anger, frustration, aggression, and fear. We are unable to connect effectively as a spouse, a father, a friend, and even a leader. We push people away, lash out at those we love the most, and keep our inner struggles to ourselves. This disjunction from the outside world poisons our relationships and threatens our ability to find true fulfillment. But there is a path to a better version of the modern man. By confronting the inner challenges that inform our outward behaviors, we can reshape ourselves. With help and courage, we can set off on a new journey toward better relationships, more honest and effective communication, and an overall better life. Tony C. Daloisio harnesses over thirty years of professional experience as a practicing psychologist and researcher, as well as his own personal journey, to illuminate the road to a well lived life. The path—and the journeyman—will never be perfect, but the journey itself will lead to lasting positive change for ourselves and for our loved ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s world, we are constantly juggling expectations and trying to manage the many pressures we feel around us. We all have issues, struggles, and habits that we feel guilt or shame about. We all have beliefs and expectations of ourselves and life that hold us back. Society is also always pressuring us to look a certain way, live a certain way, and project happiness and joy through it all. Essentially, we are surrounded by expectation, which can make just being alive a complex, exhausting, and daunting task. For many of us, we are following a path that doesn’t quite fit right. What if you could live every day feeling like you are exactly where you should be? What does being authentic mean, look, and feel like to you? What would it take for you to unravel yourself and discover who you really are? It is this search for authentic living that so many of us seek but have trouble achieving. Wendy Blaskovic struggled with the same thing. She felt a separation between who she truly was and what she was being/doing on the outside. That disconnection manifested in many challenges along the way: an eating disorder, the abuse of drugs and alcohol, self-imposed isolation, overworking. The feeling of living the wrong life was what pushed her to discover who she truly was. As a life-long learner and educator herself, Wendy only truly unravelled from an unsatisfying life while she was writing her master’s thesis on the connection between living, being, and teaching authentically. My Journey. My Story. is a rather unique approach to self-discovery. In this book, she shares her thesis—her journey to healing—so that others may find the kernel within to nurture their own true selves. Though self-discovery is a solitary process, this book helps to reassure you that you are not alone.

That is how it was for 2000 years until 1945 when Hitlers war ended, and our Heimat Schlesien no longer existed. The peace treaty demanded that Silesia be annexed to Poland meaning the eviction of our people. Six months after my 17th birthday, shortly before Christmas 1943, I was called up to military service and after my training sent to Italy, where five months later, on Sunday 4th June 1944 I was captured by the U.S. Army just outside Rome. They brought us to Norfolk Virginia from where a train journey took us to a POW camp in Oklahoma, moving soon to Fort Bliss, El Paso. In autumn 1945 fifty POWs travelled by bus to the Napa Valley to pick tomatoes, prunes, and work in the vineyards, and after New Year 1946 south to pick cotton. In early March 1946 we received black-dyed U.S. Army uniforms, boarded a troop ship in Oakland and were sent back to Europe via the Panama Canal, to arrive three weeks later in Liverpool, UK. From there we travelled by train to the north of Scotland where now over sixty years later, I continue to live. My book will tell my journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story everyone should read. 100+ 4*/5* reviews! A roller coaster ride of mental health issues, travel, relationships, rape, adventures, eating disorder, abuse, drugs, alcohol. Adults only. If I told you I'd been to twenty-four Countries (twenty-one by the time I was twenty-two), that I'd worked in Japan for nine months, toured Australia for six months, enjoyed seven months in Thailand and met and campaigned for the Orangutan in Borneo, you might think that I was pretty lucky. If I told you I'd worked in the hotel industry, for a sexual health department in a hospital and with prisoners in a drug cell block of a male prison, that I'd worked as a recruitment consultant, in so many office jobs I've lost count, as well as having my own company and multiple websites, at age thirty-six, then you might think I've had an interesting life. But if I added to that a mix of child rape, mental health problems, promiscuity, drug taking, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, violence, mood swings, obsession, jealousy, loss of self worth, being raised by a mentally ill mother, bankruptcy, thyroid and gastro problems and public masturbation in school at age nine, then I am not sure what you'd think. But this is me; Amanda Green. This is my life, my story; my journey back to me from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, OCD and Borderline Personality Disorder - mental illness which manifested during my life and came out 'to it's peak' in my thirties.I was able to use my collection of mementos, photos, diaries, journals, letters, emails and text messages of my past to finally see who I had become, and more importantly with a combination of therapy, medication and my writing, how I became that alien self and how I found the real me.One of many 5* reviews... "I would thoroughly recommend this book not just to those suffering with mental health issues, but to those who would also like a jolly good read!"The editor (Debz Hobbs-Wyatt) adds...This is the journey of a normal working class girl, trapped in a roller coaster world of disorder and excitement, love and joy, depression and anger - and her fight against stigmaWhile My Alien Self would be inspiring for any sufferer, their families or medical teams in its honest insights into living with a mental illness, it also has universal appeal. For who, at times, has not felt their life spin into chaos and wondered what is normal? This story effectively and openly highlights just how fine the line is between what is normal, and what is 'mental illness' And everyone who reads it will be able to relate to it.Contains explicit language and sexual scenesEmergence had this to say ''We very much enjoyed reading this honest and powerful account of Amanda's journey from diagnosis to recovery. We applaud such authentic and candid accounts of the devastation that can be experienced by those living with personality disorder and of the message of hope and recovery that the book conveys.'Bon Dobbs (Anything To Stop The Pain and Author of 'When hope is not enough') said 'While there are many borderline personality disorder memoirs out now (including 'The Buddha and the Borderline', 'Loud House of Myself', 'Get Me Out of Here', 'Girl in Need of a Tourniquet' and 'Poisoned Love'), My Alien Self goes a long way to providing hope to the sufferers of BPD. By publishing the steps taken to reframe certain ways thinking, through CBT worksheets and other exercises, the author has revealed that recovery from BPD is possible.'I self published this book and am very proud of that fact, because I was able to write it exactly as I wanted it to be written, with the help from my fabulous editor, Debz Hobbs-Wyatt. Whilst the massive help a publisher and agent gives, they do narrow down what is published, so I took on the journey to publish it and market it myself. There's a sequel out too, called '39'. It's quite different, but it leads on from this one :-)

The more we try to hide the pain by wearing masks to show the world that "everything is fine", the more that pain does not allow us to have a life full of real love and real joy. My story is about this kind of pain. But beyond that, it's about the real process of healing. It's about how I finally understood the reason for so much suffering. Amid all the mess in my life, I found my way back to my safe harbor, to my truth and my self-love. In this book, my deepest desire is to take you the reader on a journey of love, understanding and acceptance, so that you can: Leave behind the cycle of suffering and experience the relief and support you will need for the next steps; Rebuild your relationships, starting with yourself followed by everyone who is important in your life; Reconnect with your self-value and your own truth, so that you can live according to your purpose in life; Experience forgiveness and allow yourself to be truthfully happy; Free the strength inside yourself!

Book excerpt: Journey of a Thousand Miles tells the remarkable story of a boy who sacrificed almost everything – family, financial security, childhood and his reputation in China’s insular classical music world – to fulfil his promise as a classical pianist. Lang Lang was born in Shenyang in north-eastern China just after the end of the Cultural Revolution. He began piano lessons at three years old and by age ten had been awarded a place at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In order to continue his studies he moved thousands of miles from home, living with his exacting father in a cramped, shared apartment, while his mother stayed at home to earn the money to pay his fees. At fifteen he moved to the United States to take up a scholarship at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia; by nineteen he was selling out Carnegie Hall. His tutor and mentor Daniel Barenboim was perhaps the first to describe him as ‘extraordinarily talented’; today his assessment is shared by millions. Now in adulthood, Lang Lang tours relentlessly, delighting sell-out audiences with his trademark flamboyance and showmanship. Journey of a Thousand Miles is a tale of heartbreak, drama and ultimately triumph. His inspiring story demonstrates the courage and self-sacrifice required to achieve artistic greatness.

Book excerpt: The idea that I write my memoirs came to me when I had barely begun to live in Kaufman, Texas, and continued all through the years. But I never paid heed to the plan. I was living my life intensely—what need to write about it? Another reason for my reluctance was the conviction I entertained that one should write about one’s life only when one had ceased to stand in the very torrent of it. “When one has reached a good philosophic age,” I used to tell my friends, “capable of viewing the tragedies and comedies of life impersonally and detachedly—particularly one’s own life—one is likely to create an autobiography worthwhile.” Still feeling adolescently young in spite of advancing years, I did not consider myself competent to undertake such a task. Moreover, I always lacked the necessary leisure for concentrated writing. I discovered, much to my discomfiture, that old age, far from ripening wisdom and mellowness, is too often fraught with senility, narrowness, and petty rancor. I would not risk such a calamity, and I began to think seriously about writing my life biography. I am a very nostalgic person. As long as I can remember, I have enjoyed thinking about the past, and how it melded into the present, especially in reference to my own life and my own family history. This life story is about over all my life in Africa and United States of America. I had included the stories about my parents, relatives, what life was like for them, and what they were doing when they were alive. I like looking at old pictures and other mementos that help bring some of that past back to life or just evoke the spirit of the memories. This story is about my childhood life I had in Ethiopia, refugee camp, and United States of America, and my family as seen through my eyes. It is my snapshot, my memories to share with the world. Now, I do not know why anyone would be interested in my life, but I hope a few people, especially family, will find it interesting, and, to help keep it interesting, I promise to keep chapters and stories short, concise, and to the point. After all, nothing is more boring than someone’s tedious diatribe about something so entirely mundane. If you get to that point, just skip to another story, and just try to find something interesting, and of value to you. If you still can’t find anything of value in the reading, then I apologize, but still thank you for trying. As for me, I believed I had more fun writing this than anyone would ever have reading it.

Book excerpt: In this propulsive memoir from Achut Deng and Keely Hutton, inspired by a harrowing New York Times article, Don't Look Back tells a powerful story showing both the ugliness and the beauty of humanity, and the power of not giving up. I want life. After a deadly attack in South Sudan left six-year-old Achut Deng without a family, she lived in refugee camps for ten years, until a refugee relocation program gave her the opportunity to move to the United States. When asked why she should be given a chance to leave the camp, Achut simply told the interviewer: I want life. But the chance at starting a new life in a new country came with a different set of challenges. Some of them equally deadly. Taught by the strong women in her life not to look back, Achut kept moving forward, overcoming one obstacle after another, facing each day with hope and faith in her future. Yet, just as Achut began to think of the US as her home, a tie to her old life resurfaced, and for the first time, she had no choice but to remember her past.
