Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Richard Paul Evans, the dramatic conclusion in the riveting Broken Road trilogy—a powerful redemption story about finding happiness on a pilgrimage across iconic Route 66. Chicago celebrity and pitchman Charles James is supposed to be dead. Everyone believes he was killed in a fiery plane crash, a flight he narrowly missed. But thanks to that remarkable twist of fate, he’s very much alive and ready for a second chance at life and love. Escaping death has brought Charles some clarity: the money, the fame, the expensive cars; none of it brought him true joy or peace. The last time he was truly happy was when he was married to his ex-wife Monica, before their relationship was destroyed by his ambition and greed. In this final installment of the exciting and provocative series that began with The Broken Road and The Forgotten Road, Charles is still on his pilgrimage across the iconic Route 66. He intends to finish his trek from Amarillo to Santa Monica, despite learning that his ex-wife is now planning to marry another man. With the initial reason for his trip in jeopardy, he still has lessons to learn along the way before he discovers—and arrives at—his true destination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of Jim Harrison’s greatest works, five members of the Northridge family narrate the tangled epic of their history on the Nebraska plains. The Road Home continues the story of the captivating heroine Dalva and her peculiar and remarkable family. It encompasses the voices of Dalva’s grandfather John Northridge, the austere, hard-living half-Sioux patriarch; Naomi, the widow of his favorite son and namesake; Paul, the first Northridge son, who lived in the shadow of his brother; and Nelse, the son taken from Dalva at birth, who now has returned to find her. It is haunted by the hovering spirits of the father and the lover Dalva lost to this country’s wars. It is a family history drenched in suffering and joy, imbued with fierce independence and love, rooted in the Nebraska soil, and intertwined with the destiny of whites and native Americans in the American West. Epic in scope, stretching from the close of the nineteenth century to the present day, The Road Home is a stunning and trenchant novel, written with the humor, humanity, and inimitable evocation of the American spirit that have delighted Jim Harrison’s legion of fans. “A graceful novel . . . To read this book is to feel the luminosity of nature in one’s own being.” —The New York Times Book Review “The Road Home confirms what his longtime fans already know: Harrison is on the short list of American literary masters.” —The Denver Post “Demonstrates why [Harrison] is considered one of the best storytellers around.” —The Washington Post “The Road Home is Harrison at the peak of his powers, a splendid combined prequel and sequel . . . very much alive and probably his best novel.” —Boston Sunday Herald

Book excerpt: Three starred reviews! “Harrowing but deeply illuminating.” —School Library Journal A young boy gets detained by ICE while crossing the border from Mexico to the United States in this timely and unflinching novel by award-winning author Alexandra Diaz. The bed creaks under Santiago’s shivering body. They say a person’s life flashes by before dying. But it’s not his whole life. Just the events that led to this. The important ones, and the ones Santiago would rather forget. The coins in Santiago’s hand are meant for the bus fare back to his abusive abuela’s house. Except he refuses to return; he won’t be missed. His future is uncertain until he meets the kind, maternal María Dolores and her young daughter, Alegría, who help Santiago decide what comes next: He will accompany them to el otro lado, the United States of America. They embark with little, just backpacks with water and a bit of food. To travel together will require trust from all parties, and Santiago is used to going it alone. None of the three travelers realizes that the journey through Mexico to the border is just the beginning of their story.

Book excerpt: On June 22nd, 2007, following a conviction for securities fraud, Jerry Byrne was sentenced to prison for 2 1/3rd to 7 years. Byrne is led away in tears. That very afternoon he is shackled and put on a steaming hot bus, along with 30 other prisoners, for the 2 hour drive out to notorious Rikers Island prison, NY. He spends his first night shuttled from cell to cell, one more overcrowded than the next. His journey begins........ His nightmarish 3 week stay at Rikers is followed by 3 weeks at Downstate Correctional Facility, a processing prison, where inmates get "state ready" for their eventual trip up North. Byrne eventually lands at Mohawk CF, in Rome NY, his new home for the next 11 months. What began as letters and a blog to his parents and family, turns into a 'daily diary' detailing all that he experiences during his ordeal. He takes you from the heartache and despair of his new surroundings, introducing the many characters he meets along the way. From a double murderer who befriends Byrne on day 1, to the kidnappers, drug dealers, and sexual predators he encounters along the way. Every move is watched, there is no such thing as privacy. Byrne works hard at gaining respect, befriending one or two inmates who look out for him, but the slashings & fighting are everywhere. He lives in constant fear of making a false move and winding up in the dreaded "Box," a prison within a prison. Follow him as the despair eventually turns into redemption and strength. For with the loss of freedom comes the realization that all those 'little things in life' that he once took for granted, mean so much to him now, and how he can't wait for the day to reclaim them. Vowing never to lose them again. Not being able to bear the thought of subjecting his loving sons to witness him 'behind the wall, ' Byrne is eventually released after 13 months and is reunited with his two sons.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER A poignant and inspiring memoir of the people and challenges that shaped the life and career of Canada's most decorated Indigenous athlete. Over the course of his incredible career, Bryan Trottier set a new standard of hockey excellence. A seven-time Stanley Cup champion (four with the New York Islanders, two with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and one as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche), Trottier won countless awards and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was named one of the NHL's Top 100 Players of All Time. Trottier grew up in Val Marie, Saskatchewan, the son of a Cree/Chippewa/Metis father and an Irish-Canadian mother. All Roads Home offers a poignant, funny, wise, and inspiring look at his coming of age, both on and off the ice. It is a unique memoir in which Trottier shares stories about family, friends, teammates, and coaches, the lessons that he has learned from them, and the profound impact they have had in shaping the person he has become. Some of the incredible characters featured in the book include Trottier's father Buzz; legendary Islanders coach Al Arbour; teammates Clark Gillies and Mike Bossy; and the Penguins' Mario Lemieux, to name but a few. He'll also talk about the high school English teacher and guidance counsellor who helped him develop self-confidence and encouraged him as a writer: Governor General's Award–winning poet, Lorna Crozier. All Roads Home will also include a Foreword from bestselling author Jesse Thistle (From the Ashes) and two very special Afterwords: one from Trottier's daughter, Lindsy Ruthven, and the other from his life-long friend, beloved hockey great Dave "Tiger" Williams.

Book excerpt: Koba Sharikov is a truly dauntless man, who has achieved many things in spite of the difficulties he has faced, and has made the impossible become possible. Abandoned at birth to an orphanage in the midst of World War II, Sharikov's story reveals the true diversity of human life, from larceny to love, loss, and boatbuilding. His is a life lived to its full potential, where education-both formal and informal-became a passport to adventure. "I had a dream to live a life with no poetry unwritten, no song unsung, and no painting left unpainted, so that at the end, I could claim that all has been said and done." These pages scratch the surface of a life lived with vigour and enthusiasm, and take the reader on a vivid and inspiring journey. Follow Sharikov's transformation from the small boy who took sanctuary amid the roots of a tree near his orphanage to the man who moved on to provide similar roots to orphaned African children. His life's story is truly a testimony to his motto: "more is in me."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By this point in our lives (my target readers) weve all heard the old adage You cant go home. But what does it mean? As life winds down and the drone of existence begins to wane, I'm feeling an intangible desire or need to reach back into my past and reconnect with a by-gone time and people...living and/or dead. It feels like an elusive melody that seems distantly familiar, yet strange and unidentifiable. If all the above sounds like a premonition of the inevitable, I agree and accept that my time is ticking away. But its not about dyingits about going home! Im not afraid of dying, but I do struggle with the reality that I will no longer physically exist. I have to wonder if the term going home isnt a misnomer and maybejust maybe, were trying to return to Neverland (Fridays With Landon). When we were very young we searched for that elusive, utopian communityand studies have shown that in our declining years, we slowly revert to our childhood. Another line-of-thought is that its all just a mirage. We know and accept that a man can be dying of thirst, in the middle of the driest desert, and his mind will anesthetize him by creating the illusion of an oasis. If we can acknowledge that phenomenon (the minds coping mechanism) then it shouldnt be much of a stretch to reason that the elderly possess those same innate coping capabilitiesto ease their journey home. Of course their mirage would be about going homenot to a place, but to another time. What is the driver for this (apparently) universal pilgrimage? I have to wonder, even compare it to an addicts motivation (The Path to Addiction)one more trip down that path of pleasant memories even as the host is being sacrificed.
