I had a nine-and-a-half-hour surgery to remove ten cancerous tumors from my pancreas and duodenum. My entire way of life had changed because of the removal of part of my stomach, pancreas, and intestines. My patience and faith was tested. During this recovery, God gave me poetry and was faithful during this difficult journey.

Book excerpt: Stripping: My Fight to Find Me will take you into the mind, body, brain, and soul of Dr. Sunita Merriman as she journeys to reclaim her true self. Through the gift of her words, you will hear and feel what happens when a child experiences loss and trauma. How is it that the world appears to be the same scary place to her in adulthood and continues to haunt her? How can she grow up so sound, accomplished, and highly successful on the outside yet be so fragmented on the inside? Sunitas poems give a no-holds-barred account of a grueling and raw battle that is at times tough to read. Yet you will be compelled to keep turning the pages until you get to the last one. The author doesnt only share her fight but she also recognizes and celebrates the human unconscious that defies suffering and reaches out to be healed and loved. Stripping: My Fight to Find Me translates the language and spirit of the unconscious and is about how the intimate and mysterious relationship between science and spirituality make up the sacred in us all.

Book excerpt: This collection of poetry originated many years ago when I wrote about my relationships with several active alcoholics. I use the image of the butterfly because these creatures are among the most beautiful in the world, and I attach spiritual significance to them. In poetry, butterflies often represent freedom, whimsy, or transformation. I started writing poetry about twenty-five years ago when I needed an avocation other than my career in public health. Since that time, I have undergone a spiritual change through twelve-step programs, Unity teachings, A Course in Miracles, meditation, and writing. The metamorphosis and the poems that accompanied this change are chronicled here. The format of the collection consists of a poem on one page and an affirmation with a statement about the poem on the page following in order to enhance understanding of the poem. I have found that affirmations are useful tools for turning around negative thoughts. The poems are arranged in order from darker themes to lighter, more spiritual themes. This collection can help others overcome the difficulty of a relationship with a non-recovering alcoholic or other addicted person. There are many paths to recovery that offer hope for dealing with the most challenging of relationships. This is one of those paths.

With clear perception and precise emotional tones, Kate Daniels explores recovery experiences from multiple, evolving vantage points, including active addiction, 12-step treatment, co-occurring mental illness and addiction (known as dual diagnosis), and relapse. These intimately voiced, harrowing poems reveal the collateral damage that addiction inflicts on friends and families, in addition to the primary damage sustained by addicts themselves. Offering bold descriptions of medical processes, maternal love, and the potential for hope as an antidote to despair, this timely collection offers a firsthand account of the many crises at the heart of the opioid epidemic.

It was extremely messy and impossible to read. Impulse control was gone, and insanity had consumed my soul. The poems in this book outline the progression of one addict's recovery throughout the rehabilitation process emotionally, physically, and spiritually. My hope is that any addict or alcoholic will know that recovery is possible. There is hope for a better life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I first tried to get sober in 2014, my life was falling apart. Even though, through out years of drinking every day, I was functional. I held a job, had a mortgage, cars, a family ... but I was coasting, and some point, I had lost the will to love and love life. At that point, I hadn't lost any of those things yet because of my drinking, but I was on a road where I could very well lose everything sober. I would rustle up a few months here and there, but I was going insane. Thinking on my own and pushed me to the brink of insanity. Something wasn't working for me, and so I kept going back out there. With the encouragement from my wife, and an ultimatum from my family, I sought help from people who have lived through this to tell their stories, including a dear Uncle. In 2015, it finally stuck, I established a sobriety date (07/29/15) but I still needed something to keep my hands busy during those key times in the evening when I used to drink the most. My wife, reminded me of all those lovely songs (I am a songwriter as well) and poems I used to write for her when we were dating, and was embarking upon a writing journey of her own. Knowing how it helped her, she stuck a typewriter in my face and said, "write, because I know you can." Just over a year later, My Sober Little Moon is born. In this collection of poetry, I chronicled the early days of sobriety during 2014 when I failed to see the light, and in 2015 when I found an answer. Each piece takes the reader through the pain the addiction caused others, how I viewed himself, my Love and the world as I learned to live life without alcohol. In those early days, and still to this day, I identified with a wounded bear, and the phases of the moon, and I wanted that to play into the images in the book. In late 2014, I took on the pen name of "The Poetry Bandit" because I felt like I was stealing back my love for language and poetry and to do something worthwhile with it. I had an English Literature BA, but had wasted all that knowledge and passion. It was time for the Poetry Bandit to make up for lost time.
