The impetus for each writing varies but the author is prayerful that the single purpose of connectiveness to a higher power and understanding reminds central throughout the work. This compilation is varied and addresses love, loss, pain, gain, politics, religion, letting go, friendships, family, holidays and hope. Because of its broad topics diversity, the author is hopeful that each reader will find at least one writing in this compilation which speaks to his/her heart and soul and causes him/her to seek for an answer beyond the mundane and the commonly accepted ones.

Book excerpt: "I Take My Pen in Hand" is a collection of Civil War letters written by Sidney A. Lake and Conrad Litt, farm boys and friends from Pembroke, N.Y. These two men served with the 100th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry, 'Eagle Brigade.' " Conrad's letters describe the establishment of the regiment in 1862 and several battles, including the Battle of Fair Oaks. The 100th Regiment was in the first charge on Ft. Wagner with other regiments including the 54th Massachusetts (the first Negro regiment). Conrad Litt was killed in this charge on July 18, 1863 at Morris Island, South Carolina. The letters of Sidney Lake tell of Conrad's death and describe the Battle of Ft. Wagner as well as other major battles. Sidney was discharged in 1865. Sidney's letters tell of events at Ft. Sumter, Bermuda Hundred, tunneling the mine at Petersburg, Virginia and the explosion at City Point, Virginia. With the addition of 88 descriptive images: which include photographs as well as official records and reports, these letters come alive as we relive this time in history.

Book excerpt: The Author has written re the memories and moments of a young woman as related and experienced. It begins with the earliest memories and continues to take the readers through a journey of culture, adolescence, sexuality, wilderness adventure, and loss. It is a story of quest in terms of self discovery, self fulfillment, and self determination. It is a presentation of the influences that have occurred and shaped and on occasion misshaped this life. My Pen and I depicts the feminine through the character, through interpersonal interactions and with nature as the matriarchal in a continual experience of lesson, joy, abandonment, and success. It will capture the readers with the story of risk and plight, literally fire and fish and instil within them a sense of the unreality in life’s realities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few episodes in Texas history have excited more popular interest than the Mier Expedition of 1842. Nineteen-year-old Joseph D. McCutchan was among the 300 Texans who, without the cover of the Lone Star flag, launched their own disastrous invasion across the Rio Grande. McCutchan's diary provides a vivid account of his experience—the Texans' quick dispatch by Mexican troops at the town of Mier, the hardships of a forced march to Mexico City, over twenty months of imprisonment, and the journey back home after release. Although there are other firsthand accounts of the Mier Expedition, McCutchan was the only diarist who followed the Tampico route to Mexico City. His account documents a different experience than that of the main body of prisoners who marched to the national capital by way of Monterrey, Saltillo, and Agua Nueva. Among the last of the prisoners to be freed, McCutchan covers in his journal the whole period of confinement from December 26, 1842, to the final release on September 16, 1844. The McCutchan diary is set apart from other Mier accounts not only by the new information it provides, but also by Joseph Milton Nance's superb editing. Nance is an acknowledged authority on the hostilities between Texas and Mexico during the era of the Texas Republic. He has transcribed, edited, and annotated the diary with characteristic scholarship and painstaking attention to detail.

Book excerpt: In this collection, thirteen distinguished contributors examine the influence of the ancient skeptical philosophy of Pyrrho of Elis and Sextus Empiricus on early modern political thought. Classical skepticism argues that in the absence of certainty one must either suspend judgment and live by habit or act on the basis of probability rather than certainty. In either case, one must reject dogmatic confidence in politics and philosophy. Surveying the use of skepticism in works by Hobbes, Descartes, Hume, Smith, and Kant, among others, the essays in Skepticism and Political Thought in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries demonstrate the pervasive impact of skepticism on the intellectual landscape of early modern Europe. This volume is not just an authoritative account of skepticism’s importance from the Enlightenment to the French Revolution, it is also the basis for understanding skepticism’s continuing political implications.
