Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Own Story It is difficult, it is almost impossible, for any one to talk about himself and his actions without unconsciously trying to excuse wrong doing or to exaggerate his better motives. I may not be able to entirely avoid these errors, but I shall try to avoid them. I shall try to tell without concealment or evasion, either for myself or others, the whole truth behind the most important chapters in San Francisco's life as a city. While I shall call this my own story, it will be the story of many editors, many reformers, many righteous crusaders against graft and crime, vice and bad people. I shall start the story when I became editor of the Bulletin in 1895. Worldly success was my only ideal. I knew nothing of life as it is really lived. I saw only shadows of men, believing that the villain, as in the plays of that day and, unfortunately, of this day, was thrown from a bridge, and the hero in even ing dress married the perfect lady in the last act. Passion ately fighting in many battles what I conceived to be evil, I gradually discovered that it was the evil in me that brought defeat. It was evil fighting evil. This truth took possession of me. I wanted others to know it. I believed it could best be understood by asking bad people who knew they were bad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Own Story: With Recollections of Noted Persons The significance of the saying (carlyle's, is it not?) that the story of any man's life would have interest and value, if truly told, is recognized, I think, by the most of us; yet each is apt to fancy at least one exception to the rule, namely, his own particular life. This certainly was the case with myself, even up to the time when I was induced - reluctantly for that reason - to undertake these memoirs. I have therefore been not a little surprised at the manner in which the chapters that appeared in recent num bers of the Atlantic Monthly have been received, and can only attribute it to whatever success I may have had in fulfilling the condition that points the saying. Fourth of July would still bring its fireworks and gayety if you had never heard of the Liberty Bell - but you wouldn't feel that thrill of pride when the flag is unfurled to the summer breeze. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of My Life After earnest soliciation I have prevailed on my father to write out some of the events of his romantic and eventful career. One main ommission I see in his sketch is that he has nowhere mentioned the many deeds of loving kindness he has shown to the needy and numerous gifts to the church and to every deserving person or object that came to his notice, and they have been many. In his humility he follows the injunction "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth." In the pioneer days of Marion county he acted as physician, dentist, arbitrator of disputes, and business and spiritual adviser. His time, patience, and power have seemed to be unlimited. A keen sense of humor and ability to tell and enjoy a joke have made him friends and made his companionship delightful. His immense energy and dynamic force have manifested themselves, not only in a material way, but more than all in a religious devotion and application of the teachings of the Bible. He read to and with his children and encouraged us to memorize verses and chapters from the sacred volume. He taught us to sing. How well I remember the family group sitting by the fire. My father in the center leading and beating time to the music, every child imitating in tone and gesture. My mother, even then, was generally busy and would sing her songs while cooking, washing, ironing or mending. I have never heard sweeter music than her low tones on "Come, come, come, to the Savior," O love divine how sweet thou art," and other old songs of Zion. Our attendance at religious service was just as regular as the Lord's Day came with every extra opportunity the time and locality afforded. After all these years and as they grew old their lives prove that "The path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more into the perfect day."
