The apple of her father’s eye, she’s the perfect daughter that is often the voice of reason with her friends, steering them away from disaster too many times to count. Lo has the picture-perfect life that every girl dreams of and rises to the occasion in all areas—except her love life. Buried deep below her good girl persona is a young woman with a thirst for the kind of love that can only be given by a bad boy, the kind of love that goes against everything that a good girl stands for... Like bees to honey, the bad boys can sniff Lo out a mile away and Angel proves just that when he slides his way into her life, but time is something he seems unwilling to give her. With alarm bells going off immediately, Lo knows that Angel is nothing but trouble and heartbreak waiting to happen...yet he stays on her mind. Lo doesn’t have a chance to get too starry-eyed with Angel before trouble’s twin shows up by way of Jamario, a player with a mountain of skeletons in his past. When Lo’s hit with baby mama drama from a few different women, she’s certain that Rio is bad for her...but he does her body so good and when he touches a depth that she never knew existed, Lo just might leave her good girl persona behind—for good. Just when Rio has Lo questioning everything about herself, Angel reappears and seems destined to prove that he’s a good guy after all. Putting his best foot forward, he treats her like royalty and is just what she needs to pull through the chaos that has recently become her life...but no matter how hard Angel loves her, Rio still has a piece of Lo’s heart—a piece that just might land her in a life or death situation when Rio’s dark side come to light.

There she experienced all sorts of abuse and fell victim to the system that should have protected her. Not long after adoption, a spiral of events led to the climatic throw down that forever changed the course of her life. Take the journey with her back to the beginning as she endured “the pain” of abuse and the instability of foster care; while staying determined to live “in the promise” of knowing that God will never leave you or forsake you. That if you hold on, keep the faith, and keep hope, He always has something better. According to most statistics Nikki J. should be a neglectful mother of at least three children, incarcerated, a high school dropout, or dead. But fortunately for the world she’s just too darn stubborn to do what anybody says. She decided to write this book instead. Take the ride to the beginning as against all odds Nikki hangs on long enough for her promise to arrive. Determined not to let her hurt, pain, anger, and disappointment determine her future; here’s her incredible story of forgiveness, unbelievable strength, hope, perseverance, and faith. Allow her experiences to spark change so no matter what your pain is, you keep faith in your promise!

Book excerpt: Tragic Magic is the story of Melvin Ellington, a.k.a. Mouth, a black, twenty-something, ex-college radical who has just been released from a five-year prison stretch after being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. Brown structures this first-person tale around Ellington's first day on the outside. Although hungry for freedom and desperate for female companionship, Ellington is haunted by a past that drives him to make sense of those choices leading up to this day. Through a filmic series of flashbacks the novel revisits Ellington's prison experiences, where he is forced to play the unwilling patsy to the predatorial Chilly and the callow pupil of the not-so-predatorial Hardknocks; then dips further back to Ellington's college days where again he takes second stage to the hypnotic militarism of the Black Pantheresque Theo, whose antiwar politics incite the impressionable narrator to oppose his parents and to choose imprisonment over conscription; and finally back to his earliest high school days where we meet in Otis the presumed archetype of Ellington's "tragic magic" relationships with magnetic but dangerous avatars of black masculinity in crisis. --biography.jrank.org.

Book excerpt: A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three. Taught everywhere—from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing—it has become required reading for any American and continues to challenge readers in their perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, courage and fear and longing. The Things They Carried won France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize; it was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

This Sheikh was a man of goodness and faith. He complained to me of thepeople's situation in that country (i.e., Iraq ) under the Tatars (Mongols) rule of ignorance, injustice, and loss of faith and knowledge. He asked me to write him an 'Aqidah (creed) as a reference to him and his family. But I declinedsaying: Many creeds have been written. Refer to the scholars of the Sunnah. However, he persistedin his request, saying: I do not want any creed but one you write. So I wrote this one for him while Iwas sitting one afternoon. Many copies of it are dispersed throughout Egypt, Iraq and other provinces. (Majmu' Fatawa IbnTaimiyah, VIII, p.164)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the mistreatment of black Americans. In this 'precise and eloquent work' - as described in its Pulitzer Prize citation - Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history - an 'Age of Neoslavery' that thrived in the aftermath of the Civil War through the dawn of World War II. Using a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Blackmon unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude thereafter. By turns moving, sobering and shocking, this unprecedented account reveals these stories, the companies that profited the most from neoslavery, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Examines a crucial period in Arabic literature which has received insufficient attention previously--the pre-modern writers of the 19th century . . . whose journalism and fiction not only shaped contemporary opinion but also subtly molded the contours and boundaries of discourse for the generations that followed."--Michael Beard, University of North Dakota Dynamic and original, this study of the formation of modern Arab identity discusses the work of "pioneers of the Arab Renaissance," both renowned and forgotten--a pantheon of intellectuals, reformers, and journalists whose writing until now has been mostly untranslated. Against the backdrop of European imperialism in the Arab world, these literati planted the roots of modernity though their experiments in language, rhetoric, and literature. In both fiction and nonfiction they generated a radically new sense of Arab identity. At the same time, Sheehi argues, they created the terrain that produced an Arab preoccupation with "failure" and a perception of Western "superiority"--the terms intellectuals themselves used in the 19th century in diagnosing their cultural crisis. Neglected by historians, this ambivalent and contradictory state of consciousness is at the heart of the ideology of Arab identity, Sheehi says, and it describes a variety of subjective positions that Arabs would adopt throughout the 20th century. It became the intellectual quicksand for the Arab world's confrontation with colonialism, capitalist expansion, and individual state formation. Using psychoanalytic and post-structuralist theory, Sheehi looks at texts by writers such as Butrus al-Bustani, Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, Muhammad al-Muwaylihi, and Muhammad Abduh. His analysis deconstructs popular and academic perceptions--especially prevalent after 9/11--that Arabs have failed to internalize modernity. Indeed, he says, Christian secularists, Islamic modernists, and romantic nationalists alike have produced a body of knowledge and shared an epistemology that constitute modernity in the Arab world. Starting in Middle Eastern literature and intellectual history and ending in postcolonial studies, this groundbreaking work offers a sophisticated counter-theoretical framework for understanding and reevaluating modern Arabic literature and also the history and historiography of Arab nationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunisia became one of the largest sources of foreign fighters for the Islamic State—even though the country stands out as a democratic bright spot of the Arab uprisings and despite the fact that it had very little history of terrorist violence within its borders prior to 2011. In Your Sons Are at Your Service, Aaron Y. Zelin uncovers the longer history of Tunisian involvement in the jihadi movement and offers an in-depth examination of the reasons why so many Tunisians became drawn to jihadism following the 2011 revolution. Zelin highlights the longer-term causes that affected jihadi recruitment in Tunisia, including the prior history of Tunisians joining jihadi organizations and playing key roles in far-flung parts of the world over the past four decades. He contends that the jihadi group Ansar al-Sharia in Tunisia was able to take advantage of the universal prisoner amnesty, increased openness, and the lack of governmental policy toward it after the revolution. In turn, this provided space for greater recruitment and subsequent mobilization to fight abroad once the Tunisian government cracked down on the group in 2013. Zelin marshals cutting-edge empirical findings, extensive primary source research, and on-the-ground fieldwork, including a variety of documents in Arabic going as far back as the 1980s and interviews with Ansar al-Sharia members and Tunisian fighters returning from Syria. The first book on the history of the Tunisian jihadi movement, Your Sons Are at Your Service is a meticulously researched account that challenges simplified views of jihadism’s appeal and success.
