He learned that his real name was not Norman. It was Lemn Sissay. He was British and Ethiopian. And he learned that his mother had been pleading for his safe return to her since his birth. This is Lemn's story: a story of neglect and determination, misfortune and hope, cruelty and triumph. Sissay reflects on his childhood, self-expression and Britishness, and in doing so explores the institutional care system, race, family and the meaning of home. Written with all the lyricism and power you would expect from one of the nation's best-loved poets, this moving, frank and timely memoir is the result of a life spent asking questions, and a celebration of the redemptive power of creativity.

His seminal 1961 follow-up to Notes on a Native Son shows him responding to his times and exploring his role as an artist with biting precision and emotional power: from polemical pieces on racial segregation and a journey to 'the Old Country' of the Southern states, to reflections on figures such as Ingmar Bergman and André Gide, and on the first great conference of African writers and artists in Paris. Download or read book Norman Jewison written by Ira Wells and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norman Jewison directed some of the most iconic and beloved films of an era, from In the Heat of the Night and The Thomas Crown Affair to Jesus Christ Superstar and Moonstruck. But despite being what his friend William Goldman called "a giant of the industry," Jewison could also walk the streets of any city in the world and go unrecognized. Jewison was a man of contradictions: he cared more about telling great stories than gaining fame and fortune by showcasing movie stars, but generations of Hollywood's marquee actors - Judy Garland, Sidney Poitier, Faye Dunaway, Al Pacino, Jane Fonda, Burt Reynolds, Goldie Hawn, Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington - trusted him at crucial moments in their careers. Yet, for all his talent and the passionate support of his actors, Jewison suffered heartbreaking rejection from the executives who refused to believe in his dreams. Norman Jewison: A Director's Life is a story of artistic survival and reinvention, and about the fate of original cinematic ideas in an industry increasingly captive to corporate greed. Drawing upon exhaustive archival research and dozens of interviews, Ira Wells provides a soulful portrait of an idealist who had to fight for every frame of his legacy. Here are Norman's legendary collaborators--Hal Ashby, William Rose, Steve McQueen, and more--brought to vivid life in original letters, telegrams, and revealing, unpublished interviews. A clear-eyed reassessment of Hollywood's final golden age, Norman Jewison: A Director's Life is both the intimate portrait of an artist and a rallying cry for anyone who has had to fight for their creative vision.
Download or read book Psycho written by Robert Bloch and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. To most people Psycho needs no introduction, but although Alfred Hitchcock's film was largely faithful to the book, in the novel itself you will find a story more nuanced and - if possible - even darker.
Download or read book Norman's Revenge written by Sylvia Black and published by Sylvia Black. This book was released on 2019-07-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You haven't read anything until you have read “Norman's Revenge” yet. Psycho touched on the subject of love and betrayal that resulted in murder, Bates Motel was too delicate. Norman is sitting on the bed watching his mother get undressed. No, Norman's Revenge goes much deeper than that. In Norman's Revenge Norman and his mother actually have sex. This is a story of lust, love, betrayal murder and revenge. The book starts out with Norma in the hospital having her baby boy. Norma's first pregnancy is as a result of rape. Norma's father raped Norma repeatedly ever since she was a little girl. After Norma's mother died from head wounds inflicted on her by Norma's father, Norma was the beneficiary of the abuse. When Norma got pregnant by her father, after being raped by her father for the umpteenth time, she had her first son she decided she wasn't going to take her father's crap any more. Norma knew her father didn't care anything about her and Norma just figured her father wouldn't care a thing about her son either. He used to care about the hotel but he didn't seem to care about that anymore. He just drank himself into a drunken stupor morning, noon and night. But just as expected when Norma comes home from the hospital after giving birth to Norman, her father rapes her again. As a result of this rape Norma is pregnant again. This has to stop, Norma thought. And it did. Norman grows up wanting to be left alone. He's quiet and soft spoken. Quite the opposite of his loud mouthed, demanding mother. Norman's little brother Nick is also quiet and minds his own business. After a series of incidents to Norman beyond Norman's control Norman lets people know he’s not a pushover anymore. Enough is enough. Now is the time for Norman to prove he is not what his mother turned out to be or tried to turn him into. Now is the time for Norman to get revenge on everybody and anybody who hurt, used and abused him, including his beloved mother.
