Book excerpt: Bought or brought? Revisit the nostalgia of the school cafeteria with this collection of interviews, vivid portraits, and elaborately reimagined food photos. Food often unites us in unexpected ways -- especially on Taco Salad Day. Drawing on material from more than seventy voices , these stories capture all walks of life -- from celebrities and chefs to a circus family, new immigrants, a creative dad whose illustrated lunch bags went viral, plenty of unlikely cultural mashups, and one genuine cafeteria lady. Their experiences are compelling, familiar, and foreign at the same time, forming a cultural time capsule. School Lunch celebrates our diversity and our shared experience. In their words: "School lunch is one of the core reasons I became a chef." -- Marcus Sammuelson "My mom, God rest her soul, was not exactly Mom-of-the-Year on this kind of stuff. She worked full-time, that woman was not about to peel and slice fruit for me." -- Natalie Webster "I ate the same damn thing every day for six years." -- Micaela Walker "On the days when I didn't have enough food there was always a reason to start or finish a fight." -- George Foreman "We were definitely a crusts-on family." -- Daphne Oz "I used to hate that feeling of walking into the lunchroom for the first time and not knowing where to sit." -- Chinae Alexander "Every kid had some good item to trade and I had f****** applesauce." -- Sam Kass

Book Synopsis Ollie Ollie In Come Free by : Anne Bernard Becker
Download or read book Ollie Ollie In Come Free written by Anne Bernard Becker and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The loss of a first child sends chilling tremors through a young family. The two parents try to rebuild, with visions of creating a large, happy Catholic family. Yet the universe lurches and takes the next oldest child, and yet the next, just a few years apart. Such devastating losses are unimaginable. It is even harder to imagine coping with them in an era of emotional sterility. During the 1950s and '60s there were few outward displays of mourning, no understanding of the five stages of grief, no support groups. The Bernards had to deal with their cataclysmic losses in a way that would be acceptable to the other middle-class families of the time-privately, and silently. Ollie Ollie In Come Free explores the emtional toll unexpressed grief can have on a young child. In the unfiltered voice of a child and adolescent, author Anne Bernard Becker offers a touching insight into her own buried grief, loneliness and survivor's guilt."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis Jake and the Monk by : Lynn E. O'Leary
Download or read book Jake and the Monk written by Lynn E. O'Leary and published by Raven's Nest Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her eyes were filled with fear and glistened with tears as she imploringly searched my face. “Nobody will talk to me about dying,” the young girl said. “I’m twelve years old and I’ve got stage four lymphoblastic leukemia. I’m dying and scared. Why would God give a nice kid like me cancer? I’ve never done anything to Him. Does it hurt to die? Is it scary? What if I go to hell and burn for all eternity? I think I would hate heaven. My mom, my brother, my dog Patches and all of my friends are here. I would cry every second I was there. How does a soul get out of the body? How do you know where to go? I pray and pray and I just keep getting worse. This is so unfair!” At times like this, platitudes don’t help, only hardcore truths based on careful research. This book not only answers those questions, but invites you to join Jake and the Monk as they interact and their friendship grows. This book addresses the major difficulties we all encounter on life’s journeys. All of the events are based on true situations that I have encountered in over fifty years of teaching and counseling. Join us on this journey of enlightenment. You will learn how and why thoughts become things, as well as how to script and attract whatever you desire. I don’t believe it is accidental that we are having this conversation. Please join me as we travel through what I have learned in the past fifty plus years. This is a fun, entertaining read based on real people and events. I predict this will be an important read and reference book in your library. Thank you for your time and consideration. Blessed Be, Lynn E. O’Leary

Book Synopsis Rochdale Village by : Peter Eisenstadt
Download or read book Rochdale Village written by Peter Eisenstadt and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1963 to 1965 roughly 6,000 families moved into Rochdale Village, at the time the world's largest housing cooperative, in southeastern Queens, New York. The moderate-income cooperative attracted families from a diverse background, white and black, to what was a predominantly black neighborhood. In its early years, Rochdale was widely hailed as one of the few successful large-scale efforts to create an integrated community in New York City or, for that matter, anywhere in the United States.Rochdale was built by the United Housing Foundation. Its president, Abraham Kazan, had been the major builder of low-cost cooperative housing in New York City for decades. His partner in many of these ventures was Robert Moses. Their work together was a marriage of opposites: Kazan's utopian-anarchist strain of social idealism with its roots in the early twentieth century Jewish labor movement combined with Moses's hardheaded, no-nonsense pragmatism.Peter Eisenstadt recounts the history of Rochdale Village's first years, from the controversies over its planning, to the civil rights demonstrations at its construction site in 1963, through the late 1970s, tracing the rise and fall of integration in the cooperative. (Today, although Rochdale is no longer integrated, it remains a successful and vibrant cooperative that is a testament to the ideals of its founders and the hard work of its residents.) Rochdale's problems were a microcosm of those of the city as a whole—troubled schools, rising levels of crime, fallout from the disastrous teachers' strike of 1968, and generally heightened racial tensions. By the end of the 1970s few white families remained.Drawing on exhaustive archival research, extensive interviews with the planners and residents, and his own childhood experiences growing up in Rochdale Village, Eisenstadt offers an insightful and engaging look at what it was like to live in Rochdale and explores the community's place in the postwar history of America's cities and in the still unfinished quests for racial equality and affordable urban housing.
