Book excerpt: "Retooling the Mind: The Way Forward For Nigeria" is an X-ray of Nigeria's socio-cultural environment, a decaying environment sandwiched between unrelentingly-devouring evil of systemic corruption and spiritually-challenging presence of unruliness, chaos, insecurity, anger, shamelessness, and a plethora of other mental or emotional deformities. The stubbornly-unyielding character is "You," the typical Nigerian, who reside in an urban setting in Nigeria or "abroad." Retooling the Mind shows you: * How to beat the death trap of adultery * Where to find trees, real trees, that have money - real money - growing on them; they are not in New York City or Chicago! * How our culture endorses, encourages, and promotes corrupt practices * What is driving Nigerians out of Nigeria, and how to stop the "bleeding" * Why our many challenges may just be hard problems, but not mysteries This brutally expounding book is mind-boggling, carefully and cleverly crafted to stimulate your curious and reading appetite. It appeals to the moral and emotional sensitivities of patriotic Nigerians - National Youth Corps (NYSC) members, the humble civil servant, appointed government officials, university community, and private sector business managers. Retooling the Mind is, ultimately, seeking a cure for our collective socio-cultural insanity.

Book excerpt: The entirety of what we discuss and talk about in articles, blogs and social media are the many things wrong with Nigeria including this book. Nigeria's challenges are many when you start trying to analyze the actions, inactions and body language of politicians and those in power. I believe that the many challenges of 57 years of independence can be captured within a year. Simply put, Nigeria's woes have been a dj vu of events. The many cries of corruption, violence, stealing, insecurities, bad news and whatever is peculiar to Nigeria can all happen within one year. You can check it; if they are not exact then they all speak the same broad language of either corruption or budgeting challenges and so forth. We have dwelt so much on the problems, we have gone round in years, we have delayed and fought and wasted years all of the things that can be captured in a year. An academic study of Nigeria will reveal the many years of the experiment we have been on yet made no real progress like counterpart nations. Do I mean that our challenges can be fixed in one year? Far from it. What this means is that the over bloated nature of challenges in the minds of most Nigerians can be fixed when we choose to focus on the root issues, causes, priorities key sectors and ensure that those with huge resultant chain effects are taken care of. We would be healthier if power is fixed because the noise of generators has proved to add to stress, headaches and insanity during the day and night. When we create an enabling environment for people to start businesses, run it for a few years and confident of breaking even without considering the thoughts of MMM or other Ponzi schemes that have pushed Nigerians to desperation to make money. Nigerians love adventure and I don't believe that a regular Nigerian in a system that encourages growth will prefer to put N2 million in a Ponzi scheme when he can buy a machine that manufactures toothpicks or makes nails for women or produces hair extensions or toothbrushes and pastes. The excitement to explore is enough to venture, work, have fun, and build an empire of businesses. It is not in the character of Nigerians home and abroad to shy away from the fun of business, doing something new or start afresh. We are Nigerians and no country on earth is us and what we do, have done and can still do. There is no reason why young girls should be leaving this country and find themselves getting drowned in the Mediterranean. It is an anomaly to the potential we have, to the heights we can achieve far beyond other countries that don't equal the blessings of God on our lands, seas, air and atmosphere. I should not have my childhood friends in Awo-Omamma all sojourning to Western nations all because the opportunity to do what they love and enjoy has been denied. Our ladies should not be turned to tools of satisfaction in the hands of men who squander our national and commonwealth because they are vulnerable. Friends, the failure of Nigeria is not the failure in our character as citizens but the frustrations of a system that failed from inception. Let history be blessed but we have refused to change it and those who had the power to prefer to keep rocking the boat, hold the forte and Aluta Continua. Who, who, who and who will change this system for us? How long can we endure the bastardization of our youths or the loss of lives on our highways? How long will I continue to lose friends like Alozie and Kennedy or my aunties who did no wrong asides being Nigerians? We know our problems and the same dosage of how to solve them why then have we been delaying? What is your proof of patriotism if you prefer that the system that is clearly corrupt should remain because you are benefiting from it?It is time for a new dawn in our land, on our borders, in our airspace and within this territory called Nigeria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The country today known as "Nigeria" has a problem of identity in its (i) very existence, and (ii) worldview. There is no question that "Nigeria" exists as both a legal entity and a physical entity. It has defined geographical boundaries (although it occasionally gets into disputes regarding these boundaries). The country is recognised as a territorial-State by the United Nations and therefore has legal globally acknowledged Sovereign status. The problem of "Nigeria" therefore - it is a 'problem of' rather than a 'problem with' - is as simple as to ask if "Nigeria" the legal entity is a geo-social reality within its geographical expanse that is undisputed. So, the “Nigerian” problem is two-fold; the geographical expanse and the name “Nigeria” itself. Both the geographical expanse and the name are an inheritance from the British colonial master. Thus, the geographical expanse of "Nigeria" was founded on the preferences of the master, and not on the reasoning of the human populations constituting the country. The late Beko Ransome-Kuti, the late Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu, and General Abubakar A. Atofarati have commented on the incongruity of the peoples of "Nigeria" within the geography of "Nigeria". In its geographical expanse lays the question of "Nigeria" as a geo-social reality. "Nigeria" is today continued in name, and by this fact we are introduced to the “Nigerian” ingestion of the Western worldview. If the Westerner designed "Nigeria" the way it had then the Westerner had superior reason to do so. If the Westerner gave a certain geographic construction the name “Nigeria” then the Westerner had superior justification for choosing the name, never mind that the name was invented. The 'West as the Superior' is so ingrained in the "Nigerian" psyche – as in the African psyche in general – that this attitude comes alive even in every day use of language; borrowed and indigenous. We have an illumination here in the 'Nigeria" movie industry being called "kanowood" or "kannywood" or "nollywood".This swallowing and regurgitation of the Western worldview are what wa Thiong'o would recognise as his "cultural bomb" of imperialism. I call this "cultural bomb" the acculturation of the colonised. The colonizing world view is luminous (i) in "Nigeria" grapple, since independence, with sustaining the inherited status quo whose raison d'etre has expired and (ii) with "Nigeria", albeit a geographical as well as a legal entity, not being a locus of reference in any measure for its variegated geographic populations because of its rigidity in sustaining the inherited status quo.

The root idea here is that fundamental,to all historical works - that when the mind, interacts with the past, the result is something, like a torchlight whose beam is focused on the, present, thus enabling us to achieve a better, understanding of the problems which face us.,Afigbo has probed deep into Nigeria's pastbringing out all the facets, all the elements and,all the issues that are necessary to improve the, present.

Book excerpt: 'If I was cajoled to rule' is an insightful book that looks into the Nigerian societal problems and moral decadence. It delves into the background and the contributions of the leadership and followership to the notoriety of some Nigerians around the world; and conversely, the brilliance and excellence of most other Nigerians in their own chosen legitimate professional fields. The book is not a scholastic work output neither does it present any heavy reading by any standard, if anything, it should present a lightweight reading across the board to varying level and/or degree of readers. It looks at the underlying human problems from the street level to the failure of the political and other sectional leadership who have consistently failed the nation in productive and sustainable governance for decades. It is an insight into Nigeria that most Nigerians are aware of but will fail to admit to themselves because of acquired 'collective self-denial' that most Nigerians are well known for, hence, it will be a good read and eye-opener for objective and subjective Nigerians alike; and indeed, an interesting read for all the black people throughout the globe for introspection as they will see an element of themselves somehow mirrored in the make-up of Nigerians. It will also serve as a good guide majorly for non-blacks too that have to either deal or interact with Nigerians and other blacks, both within the continent and in the diaspora. It offers a roadmap to the average Nigerian mind and thought process without actually demystifying the sanctity of the Nigerian mind; that is left for the readers to achieve or decipher on their own tailwind. It's a book geared at Nigerians looking at improving their society by firstly, identifying the primary source of the inherent problems and secondly, deploying common-sense solutions to tackle them. 'If I was cajoled to rule' as mentioned earlier will also serve as a good guidebook for all non-Nigerians dealing or hoping to interact with Nigerians within Nigeria and in diaspora. The book is not prescriptive neither does it pretend to proffer solutions or panacea that will cure all the ills within the Nigerian societies both within and without Nigeria, however it will definitely serve as a purposeful tool in the repertoire of acts in the toolbox that may get the country out of the present doldrums.

It exposes readers to unconventional thinking—perspectives that they might not be exposed to or that they somehow deliberately ignore, which causes them and society danger. Filled with thought-provoking scenarios encapsulated in short chapters, the book is a must-read for anyone who is open to gaining knowledge and learning from experience.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of Alfred Obiora Uzokwes critical commentaries about Nigerias triumphs, woes and the way forward. It brings his writings into one volume as a reference material for those conducting research about the country. It will also serve as another tool for Nigerias policy makers in their everyday quest for better decision-making. The subjects of the commentaries are diverse, including politics, aviation, infrastructure, health, welfare and economy. Nigerians are resilient and ingenious but the country continues to flounder, plagued by poor transportation infrastructure, corruption, unemployment, inflation, insecurity and poor standard of education. The problems of Africas most populous nation can be traced to rudderless and selfish leaders that have continued to preside over a unidimensional economy. With plummeting oil prices, the nation is now in dire straits more than ever before. Yearning for a change in leadership and direction, Nigerians recently voted in a new government at the center, headed by a former military leader who has vowed to institute change. The world is keenly watching to see if the soldier-turned politician would make a positive difference. In spite of the difficulties of the present time, Nigeria still has the potential of becoming a great economy. Social media where citizens freely vent their thoughts about their leadership is slowly gaining the attention of leaders. Furthermore, the sometimes scathing commentaries about Nigerias leaders by the media and commentators like Alfred Obiora Uzokwe, can no longer be ignored by the leaders because of their reach in this internet age. Nigerian leaders are slowly being forced to listen to and pay heed to the yearnings and aspirations of the masses and that is a step in the right direction.

Although that first business trip was unsuccessful, he would eventually make four more trips, with the hope that the next trip would bring him that elusive financial success. I am that African American businessman, and in the process of making these trips, I lived in the country for more than fourteen years. My experiences included living under military rule, a strained union, corruption, and other social problems. Despite these difficulties, I had the opportunity of sharing the warm and friendly relationships with members of the three major ethnic groups (Hausa, Ibo, and Yoruba) and some of the over 250 minorities. After witnessing Nigeria's problems for more than fourteen years, it left me with a strong urge to write about their situation in a constructive way. My journey touched on various levels of the Nigerian society, and I would like to share these experiences with you in "It's Time" for A Country Called Nigeria.

Book excerpt: Nigeria is in the grip of a serious crisis. The country is seemingly incapable of positive traction at all levels. Nigeria's 'hardware' problem is structural and her 'software' problem is that of an incorrigible leadership.
