Book excerpt: This book follows from my lighting design course for students of a Master's in Interior Design at Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, Italy, and my lectures and courses to lighting professionals, but I believe it can be useful to non technical readers as well. The objective is to present the design of a lighting system in an interior in a more conscious way. When the designer imagines the concept for his interior, he defines implicitly much of the lighting system. Unfortunately, many of these decisions are done unconsciously: the designer is in a certain sense too used to light and not at all familiar with it. Light is not considered an inherent property of every component of the interior, just something that is somehow there. Where it comes from and how it got there are questions that remain not only unanswered, but unasked. There is a rush to producing a light plan that should magically solve every problem, but it often turns out to be completely disconnected both from the concept and from the actual technical requirements of the interior. This book attempts to correct this situation. The book is split into five parts: fundamentals of lighting science; lamps; luminaires; work-flow, and lighting calculation software.

In the second edition I tried to improve along the lines I feel a handbook like this needs to follow: I want a practical description of lighting with a theoretical basis, where the concept is followed as closely as possible by the application. All this must be implemented using a language register as simple as possible: the difficulty must be in the concepts and applications, not in the reading. For these reasons I added a part on the intelligent use of a lighting calculation programme. The objective is not to replace the programme's manual, but to show the reasoning behind the choices, and how to use this tool effectively. The book is split into five parts. The first four are: fundamentals of lighting science and basic concepts; applications to lamps; types of luminaires and their tasks; work-flow to create the lighting system. The fifth part, new to the second edition, explains how to calculate a few lighting systems with a free lighting software (DIALux), in order to give a hands deep awareness of how each choice affects the end result. In this second edition I reorganised the chapters into more coherent educational units and rewrote some of the definitions and explanations. I also added a few questions at the end of each chapter on which the reader can test his or her understanding of the material. The result is a book that is more than a third longer than the previous edition, with a third more pictures, and more practical applications. Hopefully the reader will find it a third more interesting as well...
