Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life, Vol. 2 of 3 The detachment to which I was ordered off, was quartered in a small town adjoining the mountains, and stationed there to protect half a-dozen gaugers, who were waging war against illicit whiskey. It consisted of two companies one was commanded by Captain o'moore, and he was mad; the other by Captain Daly, and he was married. Of the subalterns, two were sick and absent, and the other twain sent from head-quarters, being, as the colonel considered, unsuited for the corps. One drank water, kept Lent, played the fiddle, and professed anti duelling principles the other, because the com ruander disliked him for some cause with which we were unacquainted; he was, they said, re served and unsocial, and, from his brusque man ners and cynical disposition, generally unp0pu lar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life, Vol. 2 of 2 Minna had been lucky enough to find quarters near Zurich which corresponded very closely with the wishes I had so emphatically expressed before leaving. The house was situated in the parish of Enge, a good fifteen minutes' walk from the town, on a site overlooking the lake, and was an old-fashioned hostelry called 'Zum Abendstern' belonging to a certain Frau Hirel, who was a pleasant old lady. The second floor, which was quite self-contained and very quiet, offered us humble but adequate accommodations for a modest rent. I arrived early in the morning and found Minna still in bed. She was anxious to know whether I had returned simply out of pity; but I quickly succeeded in obtaining her promise that she would never again refer to what had taken place. She was soon quite herself again when she began to show me the progress she had made in arranging the rooms. Our position had for some years been growing more comfortable, in spite of the fact that at this time various difficulties again arose, and our domestic happiness seemed tolerably secure. Yet I could never quite master a restless inclination to deviate from anything that was regarded as conventional. Our two pets, Peps and Papo, largely helped to make our lodgings homelike; both were very fond of me, and were sometimes even too obtrusive in showing their affection. Peps would always lie behind me in the armchair while I was working, and Papo, after repeatedly calling out 'Richard' in vain, would often come fluttering into my study if I stayed away from the sitting-room too long. He would then settle down on my desk and vigorously shuffle about the papers and pens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life, Vol. 2: A Record of Events and Opinions Soon after I returned home, in the summer of 1862, Mr. Darwin invited me to come to Down for a night, where I had the great pleasure of seeing him in his quiet home, and in the midst of his family. A year or two later I spent a week-end with him in company with Bates, Jenner Weir, and a few other naturalists; but my most frequent interviews with him were when he spent a few weeks with his brother, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, in Queen Anne Street, which he usually did every year when he was well enough, in order to see his friends and collect information for his various works. On these occasions I usually lunched with him and his brother, and sometimes one other visitor, and had a little talk on some of the matters specially interesting him. He also sometimes called on me in St. Mark's Crescent for a quiet talk or to see some of my collections. My first letter from him dealing with scientific matters was in August, 1862, and our correspondence was very extensive during the period occupied in writing or correcting his earlier books on evolution, down to the publication of "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals," in 1872, and afterwards, at longer intervals, to within less than a year of his death. In the midst of all the gaieties going on, I received a letter from Lord James Townshend, Colonel of the Norfolk Rangers, begging me to come down to Yarrow, for they were to be out in two days' time. They were to assemble at Fakenham, as a riot was expected among the farm-labourers, on account of a horse-thrashing machine, which had been brought into Norfolk. I did not lose a moment, but took my departure with the least delay possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of My Life, Vol. 2 Dr. Liddell, when it was Shown up, only said, I think you are rather severe. AS to education, I did not receive much more at Oxford this year than I had done before. The college lectures were the merest rubbish; and Of what was learnt to pass the University examinations, nothing has Since been Of use to me, except the History for the final Schools. About fourteen years of life and above 4000 I consider to have been wasted on my education of nothingness. At Oxford, however, I was not idle, and the History, French, and Italian, which I taught myself, have always been useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of My Life, Vol. 2 of 2 When things have looked most desperately gloomy, I have invariably been aided by luck or by the stupidity and ignorance of my adversaries. The governor of New Caledonia advised the home government to set apart the Ile des Pins, situated about ten leagues from Noumea, for the accommodation of prisoners sentenced to simple transportation, and the Ile Ducos, a desert spot at least twenty leagues distant from New Caledonia, as a place of banishment for those who had been sentenced to confinement in a fortified place. Imprisonment on this island, peopled only by mosquitoes, would have meant a lingering death for us, or perhaps a prompt one, so great would have been our privations, and so effectually should we have been devoured by insects. But when the governmental geographers consulted their atlases they could find no mention of the island, and confounded it with a peninsula of the same name. It was a touch of nature, delightfully reassuring; the feeling of awe gave place to warmest human sympathy, when the philosopher in his most vivacious manner, and his ever cheery voice, welcomed us, not forgetting however to place a mark in his book.
