Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place where I was born is called Arthur Avenue, located in the Fordham section of New York City's northernmost borough, The Bronx. Much has changed, but when I was growing up Arthur Avenue was the heart of Bronx's Little Italy, a vibrant Italian-American working class neighborhood lined with delis, bakeries, cafes, restaurants and merchants of every kind.I was raised on Arthur Avenue, starting out in a cold-water flat before spending my formative years working in my parent's deli and butcher shop. I went on to open a butcher shop of my own there in my late twenties, shortly before I was incapacitated by Guillain-Barre syndrome.Years later I returned as a purveyor of sundries in front of Ernie's Hardware and, through a series of seemingly fortuitous circumstances, went on to purchase a commercial building on Arthur Avenue. I used the ground level to build Emilia's Family Italian Restaurant, which I owned and operated for many years and which still stands today. My sister and nephew own and operate two vibrant businesses there today -- Mike's Famous Italian Deli in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, and Arthur Avenue Trattoria, the fine Italian family restaurant located next to Emilia's. I learned many lessons on Arthur Avenue that made me a better man. I'm Salvatore Cappiello, and this is my story.

Book excerpt: “Nersesian is this generation’s Mark Twain and the East River is his Mississippi.”—Jennifer Belle, author of High Maintenance “Nersesian is a first-rate observer of his native New York.”—Publishers Weekly "The unquestioned authority of Moses is difficult to fully grasp today -- this unimaginable, outsized character whose outrageous deeds seem the stuff of novels. And that is how Nersesian is tackling him, by blending fact with fiction. Historical events and persons are interwoven with a fascinating apocalyptic story and literary license, at last revealing the tumultuous life and legacy of Robert Moses. Faced with such a daunting subject matter and multi-volume work, Nersesian’s narrative is masterful."—Brooklyn Eagle The Sacrificial Circumcision of the Bronx is the highly anticipated follow-up to The Swing Voter of Staten Island—the first two installments in Arthur Nersesian’s series of novels offering an alternate history of New York: The Five Books of Moses. Robert Moses was responsible for creating contemporary New York’s infrastructure, but he did so at the cost of destroying neighborhoods. In this novel, Robert has looted his brother Paul’s share of the Moses family fortune, repeatedly blocked his attempts at gaining public office, thwarted his career in the private sector, and set in motion events that decimate Paul’s home life. Paul Moses’ deep-seated rage metamorphoses into an act of terrorism committed against his brother and against a city that he once cherished. Although it can be read as a stand-alone novel about Robert and Paul Moses, The Sacrificial Circumcision of the Bronx is also a memory play that follows Uli Sarkisian—the hero of The Swing Voter of Staten Island—en route to solving a massive historical crime, while desperately struggling to escape from becoming another one of its victims. Arthur Nersesian is the author of eight novels, including the smash hit The Fuck-Up (more than 100,000 copies sold), dogrun, Suicide Casanova (Akashic Books), and, most recently, The Swing Voter of Staten Island, the first volume in The Five Books of Moses series. He lives in New York City.

Book excerpt: “A love song to a lost New York” (New York magazine) from novelist, essayist, and critic Frederic Tuten as he recalls his personal and artistic coming-of-age in 1950s New York City, a defining period that would set him on the course to becoming a writer. Born in the Bronx to a Sicilian mother and Southern father, Frederic Tuten always dreamed of being an artist. Determined to trade his neighborhood streets for the romantic avenues of Paris, he learned to paint and draw, falling in love with the process of putting a brush to canvas and the feeling it gave him. At fifteen, he decided to leave high school and pursue the bohemian life he’d read about in books. But, before he could, he would receive an extraordinary education right in his own backyard. “A stirring portrait…and a wonderfully raw story of city boy’s transformation into a writer” (Publishers Weekly), My Young Life reveals Tuten’s early formative years where he would discover the kind of life he wanted to lead. As he travels downtown for classes at the Art Students League, spends afternoons reading in Union Square, and discovers the vibrant scenes of downtown galleries and Lower East Side bars, Frederic finds himself a member of a new community of artists, gathering friends, influences—and many girlfriends—along the way. Frederic Tuten has had a remarkable life, writing books, traveling around the world, acting in and creating films, and even conducting summer workshops with Paul Bowles in Tangiers. Spanning two decades and bringing us from his family’s kitchen table in the Bronx to the cafes of Greenwich Village and back again, My Young Life is an intimate and enchanting portrait of an artist’s coming-of-age, set against one of the most exciting creative periods of our time—“so thrilling…so precise in presenting a young man’s preoccupation and occupation” (Steve Martin).

Book excerpt: When the New York Dolls' bassist died suddenly at age 55 in 2004, he left behind not only their timeless music--and many thousands of fans and friends--but a memoir of the Dolls' early years. This distinctive and extroverted voice of an undisciplined showman is presented with an introduction and epilogue by his widow, Barbara. This up close and personal perspective of the band's early days and late nights--including an instance where he locks himself out of the studio in full drag while tripping on LSD--chronicles the glorious, glamorous era of high times, high drama, and low comedy that captures the music, the style, and the life of the all-too-brief existence of the New York Dolls.

Book excerpt: My Father and Me is an autobiographical story that incorporates some of my most cherished memories that I have chosen to share with the reader, which is filled with love, a smidgen of danger, and good old-fashioned family values. It all starts in Sicily, Italy, in 1896. Families were migrating to America for a better life as harsh economic times were felt by all. My father Frank starts a gambling house, and it becomes quite successful. The mob steps in, and things get dicey. Frank must figure a way out or else. The family’s many activities and interactions sometimes lead to unexpected consequences. While the stories of my experiences growing up are lively and delightful, the stories from my dad and those from friends and family are heart-warming stories of respect and most of all love.

Book excerpt: More than once, Carl Reiner has had friends say, "Hey, Reiner, you ought to write those things down." And at eighty, he finally has. In this funny and engaging memoir, one of the best raconteurs on the planet recalls his life in show business in short comic takes. Reiner tells of how, after answering an ad for free acting classes on his brother Charlie's advice, he forsakes a budding career as a machinist for an acting career. In "Sidney Bechet and His Jazz Band Meet Franz Kafka," he captivates the legendary jazz man and his band with an unusual reading of The Metamorphosis, during a thunderstorm at a Catskills resort in 1942. Reiner also recalls the highlights of the succeeding decades: his first sweaty audition, impersonating a dog impersonating movie stars; his forays into the theater; his work on Your Show of Shows and The Dick Van Dyke Show during TV's golden days; and his long friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks which gave birth to the Two Thousand Year Old Man. In "A Recipe to Remember," he recites a recipe for cream cheese cookies to a star-studded audience that includes Paul Newman, Leonard Bernstein, and Barbra Streisand. In "The Gourmet Eating Club," he gives an insider's take on the now-legendary group that included Mario Puzo, Joseph Heller, Zero Mostel, and other luminaries. Mary Tyler Moore, Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney, Johnny Carson, Cary Grant, Dinah Shore, Ann Bancroft, Jean Renoir – the list goes on and on – also appear in what Reiner calls the "literary variety show" that captures the highs and lows of his extraordinary life. Through it all, Reiner displays the wit and warmth that have made him one of the most beloved figures in the entertainment business. This charming memoir will delight anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes look at five decades of Hollywood and television history.

Book excerpt: Alone, in his early forties and calling himself Joe Homeless, he wanders the streets of New York City. He is not a drug addict; he is not an alcoholic; he has never been a convict. But one thing he is--he is unwanted. My Life On The Street is the savage, poignant memoir of one of the world's homeless, faceless persons. Joe once had a job, money and a home. But now, his only home is the street. How he got there, what he does there and how he survives are his passionate themes. Deserted by family and friends, Joe has existed in an atmosphere of fear and violence for over ten years. He has survived hunger, freezing temperatures, wild dogs and physical abuse. He has been hunted like an animal by vigilante block associations armed with baseball bats. Along the way Joe found and repaired an old tape recorder and began dictating his experiences in basements and on rooftops--anywhere he could find a quiet spot alone. Years and several tape recorders later, he had over thirty cassettes that told his story. From rush hour subway platforms, Joe recruited a staff of volunteers: musicians and writers, editors and lawyers who transcribed and edited Joe's account of his decade on the streets. Joe finally found help on the street from these people who either admired his guts and persistence, or felt a social responsibility to get his manuscript published. And, although Joe wanted his story told to "make a buck and get me off the street", he also wants to "make things better for everybody else in the street" by letting people know the truth about a homeless existence. Joe Homeless is a pen name adopted to protect the author's identity on the streets, where he feels threatened by police, residents andhis fellow homeless.

Book excerpt: Much has been written about Tommy Mottola, one of the most powerful, visionary, and successful executives in the history of the music industry. He discovered, developed and launched the careers of many superstars, including Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Estefan, and is credited with creating the "Latin Explosion." He has had the privilege of working alongside Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Barbara Streisand, the Dixie Chicks, Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, Tony Bennett, and Ozzy Osbourne, amongst other music giants. This is his story--a story of the modern music industry, from Elvis to the iPod--through the eyes of the man who made much of it happen. Hitmaker recounts how a kid from the Bronx--and a college dropout--became one of the music industry's most creative and controversial CEOs. For the first time, Tommy lays bare the facts behind the most sensational aspects of his life, such as being married to and developing the career of Mariah Carey, managing Michael Jackson's emotional ups and downs, and the power struggle with his onetime boss and mentor Walter Yetnikoff. Hitmaker will take you inside this world of power, money, and fame as he recounts the fascinating dealings with countless icons, and what it was like to be at the top when the business suddenly changed. Tommy's story is one that will never be duplicated--and here it is, in his own voice, for the first time.
