Book excerpt: While kicking a ball through the dusty streets of his Brazilian hometown, young Edson Arantes do Nascimento was given the nickname Pelé so casually that no one remembers its meaning. Today, the name is famous worldwide as belonging to history's greatest soccer player. Here, in Pelé's own words, is his incredible life story: his five goals in the last two games of the 1958 World Cup at the tender age of 17, his glory years with his Brazilian club FC Santos, his role in four World Cup tournaments, his comeback as a member of the storied New York Cosmos, and his lifelong role as goodwill ambassador for the world's favorite sport. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'Wrighty's characteristic honesty means his book is far more engrossing than most bland football memoirs' Sunday Times Ian Wright, Arsenal legend, England striker and TV pundit extraordinaire, is one of the most interesting and relevant figures in modern football. His journey from a South London council estate to national treasure is everybody's dream. From Sunday morning football directly to Crystal Palace; from 'boring, boring Arsenal' to inside the Wenger Revolution; from Saturday afternoons on the pitch to Saturday evenings on primetime television; from a week in prison to inspiring youth offenders, Ian will reveal all about his extraordinary life and career. Ian will also frankly discuss how retirement affects footballers, why George Graham deserves a statue, social media, why music matters, breaking Arsenal's goal-scoring record, racism, the unadulterated joy of playing alongside Dennis Bergkamp and, of course, what he thinks of Tottenham. Not a standard footballer's autobiography, Ian Wright's memoir is a thoughtful and gripping insight into a Highbury Hero and one of the greatest sports stars of recent years.

In his second season, 1963-64, he scored 46 goals - a club record that stands to this day - and became European Footballer of the Year. He then helped United to league titles in two of the next three terms, delivering 39 and 25 goals respectively. Now, having reached 70 years old, Denis looks back on his remarkable career and reflects on both the highs and the lows from his time on the pitch and beyond, as captured in lavishly reproduced photographs, many of them in full colour. Denis Law: My Life in Footballis a book no true fan of football can afford to be without.

Book excerpt: An instant New York Times bestseller! “Rapinoe's 'signature pose' from the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup is synonymous to the feeling we got when finishing this book: heart full, arms wide and ready to take up space in this world.”—USA Today Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women's World Cup champion, reveals for the first time her life both on and off the field. Guided by her personal journey into social justice, brimming with humor, humanity, and joy, she urges all of us to ask ourselves, What will you do with your one life? Only four years old when she kicked her first soccer ball, Megan Rapinoe developed a love – and clear talent – for the game at a young age. But it was her parents who taught her that winning was much less important than how she lived her life. From childhood on, Rapinoe always did what she could to stand up for what was right—even if it meant going up against people who disagreed. In One Life, Megan Rapinoe invites readers on a remarkable journey, looking back on both her victories and her failures, and pulls back the curtain on events we know only from the headlines. After the 2011 World Cup, discouraged by how few athletes were open about their sexuality, Rapinoe decided to come out publicly as gay and use her platform to advocate for marriage equality. Recognizing the power she had to bring attention to critical issues, in 2016 she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to protest racial injustice and police brutality—the first high-profile white athlete to do so. The backlash was immediate, but it couldn’t compare to the overwhelming support. Rapinoe became a force of change. Here for the first time, Rapinoe reflects upon some of the most pivotal moments in her life and career – from her realization in college that she was gay, through the disputes with soccer coaches and officials over her decision to kneel, to the first time she met her now-fiancé WNBA champion Sue Bird, and up through suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination and equal pay. Throughout, Rapinoe makes clear the obligation we all have to speak up, and the impact each of us can have on our communities. Deeply personal and inspiring, One Life reveals that real, concrete change lies within all of us, and asks: If we all have the same resource—this one precious life, made up of the decisions we make every day—what are you going to do? "One Life makes it clear that Rapinoe’s greatest accomplishments may ultimately come away from the soccer pitch. She’s a new kind of American hero."—San Francisco Chronicle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The day had gone badly: Celtic had just lost to their Old Firm rivals Rangers in the 1999 Scottish Cup final, and now Alan Stubbs had to provide a sample for a random drugs test. Little did he know, but it would help save his life... The results of the test showed he had testicular cancer, and suddenly, at the age of 27 and at the peak of fitness, he realised that he had the biggest battle of his life in front of him. In this compelling and moving memoir, Stubbs recalls his despair at the time and explains how, with the support of family, friends and fans as well as terrific doctors, he pulled through to resume his career at the top. And what a career it was. First he helped Bolton Wanderers climb up two divisions to reach the Premier League in 1995. The following season, he moved to Celtic for a record fee, helping them to break the stranglehold on the league title held by Rangers. After recovering from cancer, he moved to Everton, his hometown club, where he would spend most of the rest of his playing career, lining up alongside (among others) an ageing Paul Gascoigne and an emerging Wayne Rooney. A knee injury forced him to retire in 2008, but he is now on the coaching staff at Everton. A player who has seen the game at all levels, he has also had to contend with the most shocking challenges in life, which makes his story an unmissable read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up as a young boy in East Africa, in a country called Kenya. Had the same challenges and difficulties that every young boy faces growing up in Africa. I grew up in a Christian home. My parents were full-time ministers of the Gospel with The Salvation Army Evangelical organization. I am the fourth born in a family of three older sisters and three younger brothers. Seven of us grew up in the same home where the fear of God, discipline and respect for authority was emphasized. I really can't remember a day we missed church as a family. I can't remember a day we did not have family devotion every night before we went to bed. These are small and important things that my parents emphasized in our lives that gave us the foundation for life that has helped us over the years. They taught us to put God first in our lives and that form of discipline has stayed with most of my family members. My parents are now both deceased. However, the legacy and upbringing that they impacted in our lives has made us who we are today. "Thank you dad and mom for your tireless efforts to bring us up in the best way you thought for us." As a result of their assignments as Salvation Army ministers of the Gospel, we travelled and lived in different parts of Kenya. I was born in the Coastal port town of Mombasa. My younger brothers Andrew and Bramwel were born in Nakuru. Peter Mwololo was born in Tesoland, Western Kenya. My older sisters: Florence and Tru Mwololo were born in Bunyore, Kenya. Catherine was born in Nakuru too. Do you see the diversity even in our places of birth? Although we speak Kamba as our ethnic tribe, we were born in parts of Kenya that speak different dialects than the one we speak. We therefore grew up speaking different tribes in respect to the places where our parents were on their mission assignments. We were kind of missionaries in Kenya. This book is about my life with family, the popular game of soccer and how it influenced my life, and my faith in God and My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I believe my family life, my career as a semi-pro soccer player and my faith have made me who I am today. This book is also about people who grew were around me, including my family members, soccer mates right from junior high, high school , during my employment period and playing at top flight and International levels of soccer.I pray that as you read this book, you will be encouraged and motivated to realize that your life has a purpose no matter what your upbringing is and where you were born. You have a story to tell and you are not just an accident going to happen somewhere. Write your own autobiography to encourage and help somebody who feels like they have no identity in this life.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for International Autobiography at the British Sports Book Awards Mesut Ozil is a midfield magician, casting an elegant spell over opponents and conjuring passes through gaps lesser mortals can't even see. After an eventful sojourn among the Galacticos of Real Madrid he has savoured silverware at Arsenal, while in 2014 he lifted the World Cup with Germany. But his life and career have been a test of resilience. Growing up in Germany's Turkish community, he faced prejudice from those who claimed his dual identity would prevent him giving his all for the national team. Later came questions over a different type of commitment, the kind levelled against those, like Mesut Ozil, who excel in football's finer arts rather than relying simply on running and ruggedness. He has proved concerns on both these issues lack substance. In Gunning for Greatness, Mesut Ozil reveals the inside stories of his relationships with Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, his quest to help the under-fire Frenchman restore Arsenal's pre-eminence - and how he silenced the sceptics by conquering the world.

Book excerpt: The autobiography of the best male soccer player to ever come out of Canada. Before Kaká, Rooney, and Zlatan, DeRo was the godfather of Major League Soccer. DeRo is the life story of one of the greatest athletes Canada has ever produced. Born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Dwayne De Rosario wasn't expected to make it out of high school, let alone to the top of soccer world. As part of a family of five, growing up in a one-bedroom apartment, he had to work for everything he had and sometimes that meant doing things he realized he didn't want to do. It was soccer that saved him from a life on the street that left many of his childhood friends imprisoned -- or dead. For the first time, Dwayne shares many heartbreaking, life-altering stories from his mischievous childhood, an upbringing that made him the hungry, successful, superstar athlete he became. His strong Caribbean heritage shaped the person and the player the world knows as a four-time MLS Cup champion, seven-time MLS All-Star, Canadian national team captain, and record goal-scorer. He helped put Canadian soccer on the map, and it's clear that pursuit of greatness didn't come without struggle, both on and off the field. Now, DeRo hopes to inspire, and train, the next great Canadian soccer star.

Book excerpt: I had an incredible moment while I was living in my home country, and I lived, for a while, with my parents and grandparents in a suburb. I had some people in the family travel to a new country, and I used to play with young friends in my town and went to school from kindergarten to high school. I had extraordinary intelligence as a part of my talents, and my friends and I had a team of soccer players. I was in the choir at a church in the city. I had intimate relationships when I was a teenager, and I had some people pass away in my family. I was a Latino practice dancer at a club in the city, and I went to another high school in the city of my country. I had my life instantly changed when I had the opportunity to come to a new country to live a new life with my parents.
