Amerika was repeatedly told she would never be anything or there was no hope for her by influential people in her life. She believed them for so long. She had big dreams, but they were fading away. She decided to take back the keys to her life and prove the negative people wrong. She broke away from the 9 to 5 desk job and began living her dreams. Over time she discovered what her grand vision for life looked like. Follow her story as she tries out for the police department, gets a job as a flight attendant, becomes a pilot and now an author. Her vision for life is to share her story with others and inspire them to find a grand vision of their own. It's never too late to start living your dreams.

Book excerpt: I tell about my boyhood in the 1920s and 1930s on a small farm, living in relative poverty (by current living standards), when I wouldn’t have dreamed that I would have the life that I have lived: – a law school degree from the University of Oregon – a successful and interesting career – an enjoyable family life with four children despite the loss of two wives to cancer – combat in WWII and military service in the Korean War – extensive involvement with government (state and federal) – interesting experiences with foreign governments—The Bahamas, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Iran – involvement in the Rockefeller for President campaigns that could have changed history – historic battles over land use planning and workmen’s compensation at the state and federal levels – campaigns for Congress in 1982 and 1984 – over twenty years as a volunteer with Oregonians In Action, fi ghting for property rights and reforming Oregon’s badly fl awed land use system – extensive travels all over the world, except the continent of Africa In the last chapter, I write about my outlook on the future of this country. I comment on the Moshofsky children’s rise from poverty to prosperity and the huge technological advances after my boyhood in the 1920s, which were made possible by the free market, private enterprise system. I warn that the system is in jeopardy because of the fl awed policies of the Obama administration, and urge everyone to do everything they can to be sure that he is a one-term president. I have included in the APPENDIX a speech I gave in 1972 on environmental extremism, a 1975 article on excessive government intrusion in land use, and my Jobs for Oregon program in my 1982 campaign for Congress.

Five Air Force general officers, each with decades of global, high-level leadership experience, offer their insight into the five characteristics every effective leader must possess. By offering their own stories and profiling men and women they've led and who have led them, these five generals showcase leadership in action. The stories within place you at 30,000 feet, from being forced to eject from an F-16 to witnessing the harrowing landing of a badly damaged U-2 flown by a badly injured pilot. They'll also place you on the ground in the midst of combat, with warning sirens blaring as an Iraqi missile rapidly descends onto a base where significant leadership decisions are being made. And they'll offer you a unique glimpse of the high-quality men and women of the United States Air Force. In all respects, Leadership from 30,000 Feet will challenge you to become a better leader today.

Book excerpt: In this candid and witty autobiography, Nobel laureate Herbert A. Simon looks at his distinguished and varied career, continually asking himself whether (and how) what he learned as a scientist helps to explain other aspects of his life. A brilliant polymath in an age of increasing specialization, Simon is one of those rare scholars whose work defines fields of inquiry. Crossing disciplinary lines in half a dozen fields, Simon's story encompasses an explosion in the information sciences, the transformation of psychology by the information-processing paradigm, and the use of computer simulation for modeling the behavior of highly complex systems. Simon's theory of bounded rationality led to a Nobel Prize in economics, and his work on building machines that think—based on the notion that human intelligence is the rule-governed manipulation of symbols—laid conceptual foundations for the new cognitive science. Subsequently, contrasting metaphors of the maze (Simon's view) and of the mind (neural nets) have dominated the artificial intelligence debate. There is also a warm account of his successful marriage and of an unconsummated love affair, letters to his children, columns, a short story, and political and personal intrigue in academe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bass player and founding member Dire Straits shares a behind-the-scenes history of the British rock band. One of the most successful music acts of all time, Dire Straits filled stadiums around the world. Their albums sold hundreds of millions of copies and their music—classics like “Sultans of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Money for Nothing,” and “Brothers in Arms” —is still played on every continent today. There was, quite simply, no bigger band on the planet throughout the eighties. In this powerful and entertaining memoir, founding member John Illsley gives the inside track on the most successful rock band of their time. From playing gigs in the spit-and-sawdust pubs of south London, to hanging out with Bob Dylan in LA, Illsley tells the story of the band with searching honesty, soulful reflection, and wry humor. Starting with his own unlikely beginnings in Middle England, he recounts the band’s rise from humble origins to the best-known venues in the world, the working man’s clubs to Madison Square Garden, sharing gigs with wild punk bands to rocking the Live Aid stage at Wembley. And woven throughout is an intimate portrait and tribute to his great friend Mark Knopfler, the band’s lead singer, songwriter, and remarkable guitarist. Tracing an idea that created a phenomenal musical legacy, an extraordinary journey of joy and pain, companionship and surprises, this is John Illsley’s life in Dire Straits. Praise for My Life in Dire Straits “A forensic and uplifting journey through the sheer hard work, pitfalls, and thrills of navigating a great rock and roll band to the pinnacle of success. I so enjoyed the ride! Onwards, John!” —Roger Taylor, drummer, songwriter, and founding member of Queen “Reading John Illsley’s book, I relived so many moments. He captures the early days of the “English bands” and their story—the ups and downs, relationships, craziness, and fun. Of course, the music was key. This really happened!” —Mike Rutherford of Genesis “Fascinating. . . . Illsley is brutally frank about the toll that the band’s fame had on his relationships, most notably his marriage (“a victim,” he writes, “of my life on the road”). Fans will be mesmerized.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Book excerpt: In this long-awaited first book, founder of Lifespring, ARC International and Extraordinary People Robert White looks at why some people live fulfilled, successful lives; while for others, contentment and real success always seem to be just out of reach. How is it that some people know what they want and go for it, while others flounder and struggle and never seem to discover their real goals and purpose in life? Why are some people able to live extraordinary and joyful lives while, for others, life seems repetitive, flat, a giant yawn, an exercise in high drama or run by fear? Robert White does not pretend to have all the answers. However, after over thirty years founding and leading companies that have graduated over one million participants from high-impact personal and organizational effectiveness seminars, he's in a good position to help you explore what works - and doesn't work - in your life.
