Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life as Soldier and Sportsman When a mere layman writes a book it is customary for him to inscribe a preface or, as Izaak Walton would say, an "epistle" to the readers. My original idea was to write and have printed a few personal reminiscences of the days and weeks I have spent in various sports, for the young folks who may come after me; in fact, I contemplated writing a sort of boys' book. However, it came to pass that I met, and discussed the subject with, Mr Arthur F. Meyrick who, like myself, is getting on in years. He is a most enthusiastic student of racing and other sports, and in addition to suggesting that I should write a larger volume, on more general subjects, he volunteered to contribute to my book by supplying details of the Grand National from Lottery to Troytown. Gradually, as the copy grew, so did the number of new ideas. Thus it came about that causeries on other sports suggested themselves to me. When a young man, Mr Meyrick followed in the footsteps of his father in the journalistic world, and knew most of the celebrities of his time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Eventful Life of a Soldier As to my being really an actor in the scenes I have de scribed, I believe little doubt now exists in the public mind. I could at once dissipate it, by giving my name and the number of my regiment and I would have done so, were it not that it might point out too minutely some ill-favoured characters which I have given in the work. Fear for myself would not prevent-me; but I have no personal enmity to gratify, and I shall feel sufficiently satisfied, if the picture drawn deter others from following their example. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others. If a man failed to answer to his name he was marked for extra duty - fatigue duty - which was all sorts and kinds; not very laborious on those who were accustomed to labor at home. On Sunday morning we had to fall in for inspection. That meant every' thing a soldier had, his gun accoutrements, knapsack what he had in it and his tent. If any portion failed to pass inspection he had to make it so it would pass, if it was his brass plates on his accouterments, his gun, or even the brass buttons on his coat, for these were expected to shine as much as possible. At first many of the boys were rather negli gint about how they looked on inspection. But the lessons received we.e sufficient to make us all put on a good appearance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life Some fourteen years ago I published a volume of memoirs, in the compiling of which I had the kind assistance of the Duke of Beaufort and Mr. G. A. B. Dewar. It having been suggested to me that I have run through a good many experiences since then, I have been tempted to venture into print once more, and the result is the present volume. A portion of the former book, which deals with my earlier experiences, has naturally been retained, but, with the assistance of Mr. Harold Simpson, it has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date, and I have added another fourteen years of sport and adventure by land, sea, and air. If any apology is needed, I ofier it here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Army Life of My Mother and Father: A Chronological Account My Mother, the former Nelsie Patrick Hughes, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, which is situated on the banks of the Missouri River. My maternal grandfather, of Welsh ancestry, came to Nebraska from Virginia in 1856. A graduate of Georgetown Academy, he had entered the banking field and later established himself with the Nebraska National Bank in Omaha. One of the pioneers of Omaha, he was beloved by everyone. Mention of him is made in "The History of Omaha" by Alfred Sorenson. My maternal grandmother, Margaret Berlin, of Dutch and Irish descent, first came to Nebraska when her family moved from Pittsburgh (East Liberty), Pennsylvania, to farm near Irvington, Nebraska, a few miles west of Omaha. Margaret Berlin had a clever and industrious uncle, Nelson Patrick, who had made money in stocks, bonds, and railroads and had investments around Omaha, among them the beautiful piece of property which, after his death, became the famous Happy Hollow Golf Club and is now the fashionable girls' school, Brownell Hall. The spacious home he built there - the home that has seen so many gay parties and distinguished visitors - was eventually the scene of my mother's wedding. My grandfather and grandmother met in Omaha's Lutheran Church, which they both attended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They have been set down rather as the Spirit moved me to write, and if somewhat disjointed, I trust they will appeal to other rovers like myself. If variety is the Spice of life, perhaps even such tales as these may find their readers amongst those who have followed the Open road.
