The last recipe shown fits the dietary preferences of my current self; these recipes are vegan. This book can be used in many different ways and has no specific order. Book excerpt: "Eating with others is holy work." That theological conviction inspires a compelling invitation to everyday discipleship that is centered around shared meals. A life shaped by the table is one shaped by community, pastor and author Greg Mamula argues. We share common dishes, and the narrative of our lives begins to intertwine as we listen to our tablemates' stories and tell our own in turn. This new book presents a uniquely holistic approach to table fellowship as a spiritual discipline. Many table fellowship resources begin and end at the table, and many spiritual discipline resources limit the theological significance of the table to the Eucharist, led by clergy. Table Life is an intentional and interactive process of reflection and action, meals and mission, listening and storytelling, scripture and perspective, communion and neighboring. These disciplines connect the individual with Christ, the local church, their neighborhood, and their community contexts. Discover how participating in the spiritual disciplines of eating together, listening, storytelling, scripture reading, and communion in the context of a community you begin to be shaped into people who recognize and celebrate the presence of Christ in every aspect of life"--

Book excerpt: Crossing the Unknown Sea is about reuniting the imagination with our day to day lives. It shows how poetry and practicality, far from being mutually exclusive, reinforce each other to give every aspect of our lives meaning and direction. For anyone who wants to deepen their connection to their life’s work—or find out what their life’s work is—this book can help navigate the way. Whyte encourages readers to take risks at work that will enhance their personal growth, and shows how burnout can actually be beneficial and used to renew professional interest. He asserts that too many people blindly trudge through a mediocre work life because so many “busy” tasks prevent significant reflection and analysis of job satisfaction. People often turn to spiritual practice or religion to nurture their souls, but overlook how work can actually be our greatest opportunity for discovery and growth. Crossing the Unknown Sea combines poetry, gifted storytelling and Whyte’s personal experience to reveal work’s potential to fulfill us and bring us closer to ultimate freedom and happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside of Italy, the country’s culture and its food appear to be essentially synonymous. And indeed, as The Italian Way makes clear, preparing, cooking, and eating food play a central role in the daily activities of Italians from all walks of life. In this beautifully illustrated book, Douglas Harper and Patrizia Faccioli present a fascinating and colorful look at the Italian table. The Italian Way focuses on two dozen families in the city of Bologna, elegantly weaving together Harper’s outsider perspective with Faccioli’s intimate knowledge of the local customs. The authors interview and observe these families as they go shopping for ingredients, cook together, and argue over who has to wash the dishes. Throughout, the authors elucidate the guiding principle of the Italian table—a delicate balance between the structure of tradition and the joy of improvisation. With its bite-sized history of food in Italy, including the five-hundred-year-old story of the country’s cookbooks, and Harper’s mouth-watering photographs, The Italian Way is a rich repast—insightful, informative, and inviting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Life Planned and Unplanned is the book title, but it is the unplanned part of my life that I could not have imagined during my youth in Galesburg, Illinois. As the son of Swedish immigrants and from a large family, I couldnt envisage much of a future. They were the Depression years. Those families that had positions with the CB&Q or the Santa Fe railroads seemed not to be affected. Those in construction, especially of houses, were, and drastically! Construction had come to an abrupt halt. Home builders, like my father, had to be content with the occasional small repair jobs. The help of my older brother Lewis and my sisters Ellyn, Dodney, and Carole were a great aid to my parents. I sold magazines door-to-door and later had newspaper routes, along with my brother Carl. After finishing high school, together with a friend, I earned my tuition for a year of business college doing maintenance work of that school. After a year of working experience, I joined my two brothers in the military service in World War II. We had been attacked as a nation, and everyone seemed to accept the war and sacrifices to bring it to a successful conclusion.

Book excerpt: Melbourne, the late 1940s. A young conservative Australian poet named Christopher Chubb decides to teach his country a lesson about pretension and authenticity. Choosing as his target the most avant-garde of the literary magazines, he submits for publication the entire oeuvre of one Bob McCorkle, a working-class poet of raw power and sexual frankness, conveniently dead at twenty-four and entirely the product of Chubb's imagination. Not only does the magazine fall for the hoax, but the local authorities also sue its editor for publishing obscenity. At the trial someone uncannily resembling the faked photograph of the invented McCorkle, leaps to his feet. At this moment a horrified Chubb is confronted by the malevolent being he has himself manufactured...
