Book excerpt: The drasha, or traditional sermon delivered during services, is a rabbi's primary means of conveying Torah ideology and inspiration to his congregants. Many a shulgoer has recounted how, in trying moments of life, the refrain of a rabbi's drasha echoing in his or her head has provided the fortitude and clarity to rise to life's challenges. An engaging and thought-provoking speaker, Rabbi Avraham Steinberg now turns his talents to the art of written sermonics. Rabbi Steinberg gleans nuggets from the classic commentators of old, the greats of the yeshiva world today, the illustrious Chassidic rebbes, and the giants of the Mussar movement, and then adds his own insights and modern-day applications, to fashion drashos that are at once rich in tradition as well as contemporary and pertinent. The weekly Torah portion has always been the lens through which believing Jews have viewed and understood the events of their lives. Whether you're a rabbi or a layperson, you'll appreciate traveling through the year, parsha by parsha, enjoying the warmth and wisdom of this timeless collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of History, Science, and Scriptures. Multiple sources of history and science have been pulled together for great validity and accuracy of the information. For Bible accuracy of the First Five Books of Scripture referred to as the Torah, and the Pentateuch, multiple sources have also been utilized for a more complete assessment of Biblical events. Through many years of research and study, the books of Bereshis/Genesis, Shemot/Exodus, VaYikra/Leviticus, Bamidbar/Numbers, and Devarim/Deuteronomy, have been pulled together from the Authorized King James Bible; The Septuagint; The Book of Enoch; The Cabala Talmud; The Book of Yashar; The Orthodox Jewish Bible, and more. The stories in each of these books that discuss the same topics, all of those Scriptures have been brought together for greater clarity and overstanding of the story. In addition, all of the Scriptures from other parts of Scripture within each book that apply to the same topic, have all been compiled into the story. In pulling all of the parts together, the origin of sin is brought to the forefront of Biblical History. To fortify what is revealed in the Scriptures, Science, Paleontology, and Geology, are also incorporated to reinforce what the Scriptures tell us. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has proven that humanity is much older than seven thousand years In the Scriptural presentation of Creation itself, Science has proven that in the Seven Days of Creation, many eons have passed. Science by way of Carbon Testing tells us the Triassic Period: Mesozoic, Jurassic, and Cenozoic Periods occurred hundreds of thousands of years ago. History, Science, and Scripture together synchronize the chronology of the world, and of humanity. This book will be a great addition to your library.

Book excerpt: Prince Siddhartha, raised behind palace walls and showered with every extravagance, abandoned his protected life to embark on a spiritual journey. He ultimately reached enlightenment and became known as the Buddha, which means "one who is awake." He then spent his life teaching that all have the potential to awaken... Meet Syd Arthur! Living in the cloistered world of suburbia, Syd is a middle-aged Jewish woman who is potentially awake, but likes to start her day with a strong cup of coffee, just in case. Her daughter has just left for college and her diet is once again off track. While for most of her life she's been convinced that happiness can be attained by a magic number on the bathroom scale — or a really great shopping day at Bloomingdale's—she finds herself in the grocery store with an empty cart wondering if there just might be something more. When East unexpectedly meets West, Syd embarks on a journey as a spiritual seeker. Soon she's in over her chakras as her search takes her from yoga studio to meditation hall to ashram gift store to the pages of Zensational catalogue. Her Mah Jongg group insists it's merely a midlife crisis. But nothing's going to stop Syd's journey toward Nirvana—not even the hottest sale at Nordstrom's. Follow Syd as she finds her bliss and discovers a richness that rivals a Godiva truffle, making for one delicious enlightenment. "What do you wear to the meditation center?" I had asked Montana. "I mean, when I go to temple, I usually wear a suit. Sometimes a pantsuit, but mostly a skirt and a blazer." "Okay, you definitely don't need to wear a suit, Syd. Just wear something comfortable to sit in. And I promise you Om Guru is not about the clothes. No one cares what you wear. People there are concerned about the inner you, about your journey to realize and meet the Self." I thought for a minute and then said, "So let me ask you it this way. When I meet my Self, should I meet her in country club casual or something more dressy?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up until the advent of Nasser and the 1956 War, a thriving and diverse Jewry lived in Egypt – mainly in the two cities of Alexandria and Cairo, heavily influencing the social and cultural history of the country. Histories of the Jews of Egypt argues that this Jewish diaspora should be viewed as "an imagined bourgeoisie". It demonstrates how, from the late nineteenth century up to the 1950s, a resilient bourgeois imaginary developed and influenced the lives of Egyptian Jews both in the public arena, in institutions such as the school, and in the home. From the schools of the Alliance Israélite Universelle and the Cairo lycée français to Alexandrian marriage contracts and interwar Zionist newspapers – this book explains how this imaginary was characterised by a great capacity to adapt to the evolutions of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Egypt, but later deteriorated alongside increasingly strong Arab nationalism and the political upheavals that the country experienced from the 1940s onwards. Offering a novel perspective on the history of modern Egypt and its Jews, and unravelling too often forgotten episodes and personalities which contributed to the making of an incredibly diverse and lively Jewish diaspora at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East, this book is of interest to scholars of Modern Egypt, Jewish History and of Mediterranean History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Septuagint is the only extant Greek translation from a Hebrew MSS that is currently lost to us. The Greek Septuagint and its Autograph, were extensively used before the Christian era as has been testified to by historians and many similarities manifest in the Dead Sea Scrolls. During the age of the Messiah and the Apostles it appears they exclusively used either the Greek Septuagint or its Autograph as is demonstrated by the parallels found in their quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures [O.T]. The Septuagint persevered into the age of the early Church Fathers where after it inexplicably fell into disuse. This is a fresh approach to Sir Brenton's translation, in that this it restores the original Hebrew Names as found in the Masoretic Text. While this approach may seem like a glaring paradox it may however be reasoned that a more satisfying though not perfect English translation has subsequently evolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ḥayei Adam, an abridged code of Jewish law, was written by Rabbi Avraham Danzig (1748-1820) and was first published in 1810. This code spread quickly throughout Europe, and the demand for it required a second publishing which the author printed in 1818. Beyond a Code of Jewish Law attempts to understand the implicit message of its author and discuss various approaches of its writer to both Judaism and Jewish law. While the Ḥayei Adam without any doubt unveils Rabbi Danzig to be a brilliant rabbinic scholar, with a comprehensive knowledge of Jewish law as well as a coherent and concise system of presentation, it also expresses his great concern for the Jewish community and each individual Jew. Aspects of this concern such as Hasidism, musar, kabbalah, are explored.
