Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collusion with Injustice details with lyricism and moving honesty the story of one family's experience with the Northern Ireland civil war of the 1970s. The story first began when Grandfather Owen Coogan joined the British Army in 1877 at Crinkle, Kings County. After serving twenty years overseas, Grandfather returned home in 1895. He married Bridget McCormack in 1897 at Birr, Kings County. Soon after Bridget's first child is born, Grandfather purchased a farm near Sharavogue, Kings County, now known as County Offaly. In 1921, Grandfather, Bridget, and nine of their eleven children were held at gunpoint by the IRA and their homestead was set on fire. Grandfather's family then migrated to Northern Ireland in Cooneen County Fermanagh, a place made famous by the Cooneen poltergeist. Author Philip Coogan's life changed overnight in December 1971, when a bomb destroyed his thriving garage business in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland. His troubles intensified and Philip survived repeated assassination attempts. Feeling defrauded and conspired against, Philip was not allowed to rebuild his garage by planning authorities. "I received no compensation for my injuries or large building site. My health deteriorated and I suffered severe post-traumatic shock disorder and other illnesses." In January 1973, the family fled over the border to safety and Philip was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He emerged a broken man, just waiting to see what would happen next.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin O'Hara's journey of self-discovery begins as a mad lark: who in their right mind would try to circle the entire coastline of Ireland on foot—and with a donkey and cart no less? But Kevin had promised his homesick Irish mother that he would explore the whole of the Old Country and bring back the sights and the stories to their home in Massachusetts. Determined to reach his grandmother's village by Christmas Eve, Kevin and his stubborn but endearing donkey, Missie, set off on 1800-mile trek along the entire jagged coast of a divided Ireland. Their rollicking adventure takes them over mountains and dales, through smoky cities and sleepy villages, and into the farmhouses and hearts of Ireland's greatest resource—its people. Along the way, Kevin would meet incredible characters, experience Ireland in all of its glory, and explore not only his Irish past, but find his future self. “One of the finest books about contemporary Ireland ever written...In a style evocative of Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, O'Hara writes memorably of his most unusual way of touring his ancestral home of Ireland.” —Library Journal At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: The death in May 2000 of John Cardinal O'Connor, archbishop of New York, was a vital loss to countless millions. A shining, openhearted crusader for traditional values in an increasingly bewildering culture, O'Connor was a pioneer for the new face of Catholicism, mapping out an unequivocal political and ethical code that stood for unconditional charity, civil liberties, and social justice. His widespread influence and spiritual presence are still felt strongly today. Now, for the first time, one of last century's most inspiring voices for humanity, conscience, and compassion is celebrated and remembered through the words of those who knew him best. Renowned author and journalist Terry Golway shares a diverse collection of intimate stories and accounts: from former New York Mayor Ed Koch, one of the archbishop's closest friends, to fellow clerics he inspired, to all manner of laypersons around the country whose lives were touched and changed by this vital pillar of the Roman Catholic Church. With never-before-seen photographs throughout, along with fascinating, previously unpublished correspondence to and from O'Connor, Full of Grace is a gorgeous tribute and an unprecedented remembrance, affording full access to the vast heart of the extraordinary man who once famously understated, "I hope that in each place I've gone, I saved some souls."

Book excerpt: The Virgin Mary continues to attract devotees to her images and shrines. In Moved by Mary, anthropologists, geographers and historians explore how people and groups around the world identify and join with Mary in their struggle against social injustice, and how others mobilize Mary to impose ideas and rules and legitimize acts of violence and suppression. Far from an outdated practice of little relevance to the modern world, Marian pilgrimage expresses the deep and urgent concerns of a wide range of people. With examples of Marian pilgrimages from all over the world, Moved by Mary explores the ways in which men and women of different ages and religious, political, social-economic and ethnic backgrounds empower themselves to deal with modern-day issues with Mary ́s help. The ethnographic cases reveal the cultural and devotional variation of Marian pilgrimage, but also global similarities. Collectively, the contributors to Moved by Mary show how in many places religion dramatically suffuses everyday life.

But that's what Joe McGowan, of once-notorious builders Brennan and McGowan, has done with Clearing the Hurdles, in which he recounts his life and times, including a four-week stint being cross-examined by lawyers at the planning tribunal in Dublin Castle; he calls it the "Theatre of Ice". . . . [The book] will be of compelling interest to those with a passion for horses as well as anyone involved in the precarious, up-and-down business of house-building.'—Frank McDonald, An Irishman's Diary, the Irish Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Monsignor Fachtna Joseph Harte, walking with Christ every day of the year was a privilege that was unrivalled. In this memoir, he narrates his journey to priesthood-from answering the call, to walking the roads with the Lord, proclaiming His kingdom, listening to Him in one's heart, and going among His people with compassion and love. They Shall Bear You Up begins in the country parish of Kilfian, near Killala Co Mayo in the Diocese of Killala, where Harte knew from an early age he desired to serve the church. He discusses his family background, his upbringing, and his experiences of the Irish strife against the British. The story follows his schooling and his subsequent move to the United States, where he was called to begin a ministry of tourism in Orlando, Florida, holding the first service in a hotel ballroom in 1975. He served in Orlando until his retirement October 31, 2007 .A testimony of faith, They Shall Bear You Up emphasizes that as human beings we are never alone and that for those who wish to carry out God's will in their lives, "nothing is impossible with God." Through many and varied stories, Harte shows that the priesthood is not for weaklings, but for men of strong faith who live close to the angels.
