Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary account of how a laborer's son rose to challenge the power of despots, I Refuse to Die is both the autobiography of one gifted man who rose above the horrors of colonization, and an uncensored history of modern Kenya. The book is infused with the freedom songs of the Kenyan people, as well as dream prophecy and folk tales that are part of Kenya's rich storytelling tradition. Tracing the roots of the Mau Mau rebellion, wa Wamwere follows the evolution and degeneration of Jomo Kenyatta and the rise of Daniel arap Moi. In 1979, wa Wamwere won a seat in the parliament, where he represented the economically depressed Nakuru district for three years. An outspoken activist and journalist, wa Wamwere was framed and detained on three separate instances, spending thirteen years in prison, where he was tortured but not broken. His mother and others led a hunger strike to free him and fellow political prisoners. Their efforts brought about a show trial at which Koigi was sentenced to four more years in prison and "six strokes of the cane," and escaped Kenya—and probably execution—only through the exertions of human rights groups and the government of Norway.

The invasions of the North Vietnamese Communists had caused total destruction throughout the entirety of his parents village when he was just four years of age. He had witnessed the killings and the brutality of the evil Communists throughout his childhood. After the Fall of Saigon, his family had suffered great hardship from the Vietcong. It was clear that there was no future for the young generation; his family had determined to find ways for their son to escape the Communist regime. He had tried numerous times to escape with no success; nevertheless, God had protected him and he did not get killed or caught by the Vietcong. He finally escaped successfully on his eleventh attempt and his boat was so lucky to get rescued by a German ship in the unforgiving ocean. He settled in the United States of America after years of long waiting in the refugee camp. He has found the life of freedom and dignity in America from the hell of the evil Communists. He has appreciated so much about his new country harboring him and he was determined to serve and help protect the freedom and democracy for his new motherland. He joined the United States Navy and became a sailor, serving multiple deployments. He was very happy and dreamed to become a Navy jet fighter pilot someday. Unfortunately, he got injured while performing his duty. His medical separation from the US Navy saddened his heart and soul. Now he, as a disable veteran, had to fight for survival for himself and his family with two small daughters. He had to return to college and further his education. He overcame all major obstacles and impediments mentally and physically; he graduated from a Doctor of Pharmacy program from Nova Southeastern University. Since then, he has been working as a pharmacist to support his family. He was extremely happy to have another opportunity to serve his patients, his community. However, his old injury continues to aggravate him over the years; nonetheless, he continues to fight to support his family and serve the people he loves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard LaFayette Jr. (b. 1940) was a cofounder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a leader in the Nashville lunch counter sit-ins, a Freedom Rider, an associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the national coordinator of the Poor People's Campaign. At the young age of twenty-two, he assumed the directorship of the Alabama Voter Registration Project in Selma -- a city that had previously been removed from the organization's list due to the dangers of operating there. In this electrifying memoir, written with Kathryn Lee Johnson, LaFayette shares the inspiring story of his years in Selma. When he arrived in 1963, Selma was a small, quiet, rural town. By 1965, it had made its mark in history and was nationally recognized as a battleground in the fight for racial equality and the site of one of the most important victories for social change in our nation. LaFayette was one of the primary organizers of the 1965 Selma voting rights movement and the Selma-to-Montgomery marches, and he relates his experiences of these historic initiatives in close detail. Today, as the constitutionality of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is still questioned, citizens, students, and scholars alike will want to look to this book as a guide. Important, compelling, and powerful, In Peace and Freedom presents a necessary perspective on the civil rights movement in the 1960s from one of its greatest leaders.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking modern slave narrative, Francis Bok shares his remarkable story with grace, honesty, and a wisdom gained from surviving ten years in captivity. May, 1986: Selling his mother's eggs and peanuts near his village in southern Sudan, seven year old Francis Bok's life was shattered when Arab raiders on horseback, armed with rifles and long knives, burst into the quiet marketplace, murdering men and women and gathering the young children into a group. Strapped to horses and donkeys, Francis and others were taken north, into lives of slavery under wealthy Muslim farmers. For ten years, Francis lived alone in a shed near the goats and cattle that were his responsibility. Fed with scraps from the table, slowly learning bits of an unfamiliar language and religion, the boy had almost no human contact other than his captor's family. After two failed attempts to escape-each bringing severe beatings and death threats-Francis finally escaped at age seventeen, a dramatic breakaway on foot that was his final chance. Yet his slavery did not end there, for even as he made his way toward the capital city of Khartoum, others sought to deprive him of his freedom. Determined to avoid that fate and discover what had happened to his family on that terrible day in 1986, the teenager persevered through prison and refugee camps for three more years, winning the attention of United Nations officials and being granted passage to America. Now a student and an anti-slavery activist, Francis Bok has made it his life mission to combat world slavery. His is the first voice to speak for an estimated twenty seven million people held against their will in nearly every nation, including our own. Escape from Slavery is at once a riveting adventure, a story of desperation and triumph, and a window revealing a world that few have survived to tell.

The Power to Navigate Life is arguably the most complete and powerful teachings on the mastering of life. Do you wish you could enjoy better health? Mentally, emotionally, and physically? Do you wish you could better understand the reason for your health issues? The number one problem affecting people nowadays is a preoccupation with their thoughts, which causes mental, emotional, and physical problems. My book will help you: * Better understand the function between your mind and body to achieve mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. * Empower you to realise your strengths, talents and genius. * Draw awareness to your personal power, which lives in us all. * Identify and detach from self-imposed limitations; the inner critic and self-defeating behaviours holding you back from living well. * Draw awareness on the power of infinite possibilities and how to reveal your highest potential. * Realise there are no mistakes in life; simply the exchange of energy from one form to another. * Identify areas of your life that are disempowering, so you can take decisive action to move forward. Book excerpt: This is the inspiring account of her adventures, of hiking thousands of miles (mostly alone) from Mexico to Canada, through the Mojave Desert and the High Sierra, and then in the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine. When she hasn't been hiking, she has been designing ultralight backpacking gear; award winning gear that has been acclaimed not only nationally but internationally as well. She shares her ultralight hiking expertise here, as well as some of her designs and sewing techniques. There are detailed instructions for making 12 important gear items, including her 8 ounce silnylon backpack. She also includes her latest gear list (with weights) and information on resupply and ultralight hiking in winter. Just want to say a "thumbs up" to Brawny's new book "My Journey to Freedom and Ultralight Backpacking." There is a lot of information regarding what she carried for the PCT and AT, ultralight gear, cook systems, shelters, clothing, etc., along with chapters on how to make your own gear. It might be helpful to some of you who are trying to eliminate the excess bulk and weight. You can read more about it and also order it on www.trailquest.net. It's $14.95 plus $2.00 for shipping. It's autographed, too! Congratulations to Brawny for a terrific book! ----Carol Reese I picked up Brawny's book with some mixed feelings. But you know, now I can't put it down! I'm SO impressed by her. She did her hikes on a shoestring budget by making/modifying most of her gear. She took responsibility for her own happiness, and she rebuilt a life as full and rich as I could ever hope to have! --J.W. My copies of Brawny's book arrived Thursday. Most excellent. I have not finished reading yet, but very much like the style in which it is written. Some books have a feeling that the author is trying to make you like what they are writing so what is presented is subject to skepticism, but all I feel from Brawny's book is genuine. I enjoyed some of the insights which were either not noted in her journals, or reflected on again from a slightly different perspective (maybe with hot coffee in a real mug, with real food simmering on a stove, and possibly rain OUTSIDE, lol). Even though I have read Brawny's journals and knew some of the information, I still enjoyed reading it again. I am only sad that when I finish the book, I will have finished it!!! Sort of like running out of trail on a long hike, I would think. Anyway, thank you for putting your experiences into a good read. -- Joanne Feige I have just finished reading, and very thoroughly enjoying, Brawny Wellman's great new book, "My Journey to Freedom & Ultralight Backpacking." I very highly recommend it to all. Read about it here: http: //www.trailquest.net/dlgcmyjourney.html It's a great read, for many reasons. Mainly, she's a power-hiker who has logged 5000 miles in the last 3 years, carrying mostly homemade gear, and thru tremendous attention to detail, has truly refined her gear & methods of ultralighting. Brawny's sentiments on the "why's" of long-distance hiking, her treatment of, and definitions of the "journey," are themselves worth the price of admission. Get a copy today, before it makes Oprah's list and gets discovered. -- Brian in Oregon I got the book on friday, and read almost all of it over the weekend. Really interesting to read. Brawny she has put together a very interesting, helpful book; and good to read trailstories, nice nature descriptions, and all the tips. A superb combination. A book, one has to read, if he/she is interested in (ultra)lightweight-hiking. And congratulations to Brawny, that she can enjoy her life now. My mother took almost 20 years after her divorce to free herself mentally from her unhappy marriage. --Harald Loeffel, Austria

Book excerpt: "How can you expect to be called out of the darkness and into the marvelous light if you've never been through the darkest places in life?"Mary Barber has lived a life. From the gritty streets of Detroit to her ministry in Los Angeles - the light of Christ has kept her and sustained her through addiction, death, divorce and the darkest of times. She has loved fiercely and lost hard - despite it all, she comes out on top every time with her trademark infectious smile and boundless positivity in the face of the enemy. This is her story, her testimony to how she conquered it all through Christ."I had to learn on this journey to stop complaining about what we don't have, and what people don't do for us. Start thanking God for what you do have, and work with what you've got so that he can surround you with the right divine connection to get you to the next dimension. You might not see the external work, but as he works on you, and you allow yourself to be used as a vessel and move self out the way, the internal will start changing." Mary Barber is an author, evangelist, entrepreneur and radio host. She hails from a large family in Detroit. Her upbringing challenged and strengthened her through both intense low points and amazing highs that shaped her into the passionate and determined woman she is today. With her children grown, she fulfilled a life-long calling to move to California and minister under Bishop Charles E. Blake. Mary loves living in California and knows that her faith walk has guided her to her home. She gained her Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology in Michigan and has worked extensively as a traveling nurse. Mary is passionate about encouraging, motivating and coaching others to achieve their dreams and overcome their circumstances - she also completed her Missionary Evangelist License and is getting ordained in 2020. She credits her father, Leroy with setting the example as an engaged and loving man who raised her with integrity and stood passionately by her mother's side for 50 years. When she isn't winning souls for Christ, Mary loves to travel, spend time with family, eat good food, write, exercise, meditate, go to the beach, bowl and watch movies to relax and unwind. Her dream is to open a transitional home for the disabled and mentally ill, and to build her own Mission Ministry in foreign countries to help those in need. Mary has 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren. This is Mary's first book.

Book excerpt: Foreword by Kim Kardashian West The true-life story of the woman whose life sentence for non-violent drug trafficking was commuted by President Donald Trump thanks to the efforts of Kim Kardashian West—an inspiring memoir of faith, hope, mercy, and gratitude. How do you hold on to hope after more than twenty years of imprisonment? For Alice Marie Johnson the answer lies with God. For years, Alice lived a normal life without a criminal record—she was a manager at FedEx, a wife, and a mother. But after an emotionally and financially tumultuous period in her life left her with few options, she turned to crime as a way to pay off her mounting debts. Convicted in 1996 for her nonviolent involvement in a Memphis cocaine trafficking organization, Alice received a life sentence under the mandatory sentencing laws of the time. Locked behind bars, Alice looked to God. Eventually becoming an ordained minister, she relied on her faith to sustain hope over more than two decades—until 2018, when the president commuted her sentence at the behest of Kim Kardashian West, who had taken up Alice’s cause. In this honest, faith-driven memoir, Alice explains how she held on to hope and gave it to others, from becoming a playwright to mentoring her fellow prisoners. She reveals how Christianity and her unshakeable belief in God helped her persevere and inspired her to share her faith in a video that would go viral—and come to the attention of celebrities who were moved to action. Today, Alice is an icon for the prison reform movement and a humble servant who embraces gratitude and God for her freedom. In this powerful book, she recalls all of the firsts she has experienced through her activism and provides an authentic portrait of the crisis that is mass incarceration. Linking social justice to spiritual faith, she makes a persuasive and poignant argument for justice that transcends tribal politics. Her story is a beacon in the darkness of despair, reminding us of the power of redemption and the importance of making second chances count. After Life features 16 pages of color photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the country-wide famine escalated. By the time she was eleven years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun was in danger of the same. Finally, her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister, not knowing that they were embarking on a journey that would take them nine long years to complete. Before finally reaching South Korea and freedom, Eunsun and her family would live homeless, fall into the hands of Chinese human traffickers, survive a North Korean labor camp, and cross the deserts of Mongolia on foot. Now, Eunsun is sharing her remarkable story to give voice to the tens of millions of North Koreans still suffering in silence. Told with grace and courage, her memoir is a riveting exposé of North Korea's totalitarian regime and, ultimately, a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
