Her unique approach, which she calls “horticultural how-to and woo-woo,” is a blend of vital information you need to memorize and intuitive steps you must simply feel and surrender to. In A Way to Garden, Roach imparts decades of garden wisdom on seasonal gardening, ornamental plants, vegetable gardening, design, gardening for wildlife, organic practices, and much more. She also challenges gardeners to think beyond their garden borders and to consider the ways gardening can enrich the world. Brimming with beautiful photographs of Roach’s own garden, A Way to Garden is practical, inspiring, and a must-have for every passionate gardener.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Garden in Spring What would they say now if they were led into the garden through which we are now going to be conducted by its creator? Never before having seen a place fdr growing plants in, never having heard the names of Ella combe or wolley-dod - or, if they have, connecting them with no vitalising work or idea - haw will their noses not corrugate in scorn on merely perceiving plants - only plants, plants well grown, plants happy, plants well suited and consulted and made at home. But there are others, less rich, who will be glad of traversing such holy ground, and learning how the hills can be made to yield up their secret, and their children taught to forget the far high lands of their birth, and feel themselves contented and at home within a dozen miles of London. The essence of the real garden is the insignificance of the garden itself; the soul of the real garden lies in the perfect pros perity of the plants of which it is the home, instead -of being merely, by the modern reversal of right laws, the expensive and unregarded colour-relief of its titanically compounded cliffs of stucco and Portland cement. Come into Mr. Bowles's garden and learn what true gardening is, and what is the real beauty of plants, and what the nature of their display. A lowly piece of ground, wandering here and there in gentle natural ravines and slopes. No vast structures, but bank added to bank as the plants require it, and nothing asked of the structure except that it be simple and harmonious, and best calculated to serve the need of the little people it is to accommodate - to accommodate. Throughout the book, "cheat sheets" sum up George's key facts and techniques, providing a handy quick reference for anyone starting their first vegetable garden, including how to find the best location, which vegetables are easiest to grow, how to pick out the healthiest plants at the store, when (and when not) to water, how to protect your plants from pests, and what to do with extra produce if you grow too much. If you are a visual learner, beginning gardener, looking for something new, or have struggled to grow vegetables in the past, you'll find this unique illustrated format ideal because many gardening concepts--from proper planting techniques to building raised beds--are easier to grasp when presented visually, step by step. Easy and entertaining, The Comic Book Guide to Growing Food makes homegrown vegetables fun and achievable.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Little Garden: And Your Little Garden Of course, we all know the quaint little old fashioned flower bed in the middle of the lawn is quite a thing of the past; in order to make a perfect landscape we must have a picture in a frame as it were, a lawn, a house, and a bor der. I can safely say, all flowers require sun shine; therefore we must follow Mr. Sun for a day or two, and see just where he casts his beams, for in just those spots must we use our greatest efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Home Garden The following pages were originally written for small children; as such they appeared in the Coun try Gentleman under the title The Child's Gar den. Gardening is such a big problem I was anxious to make it understandable to the begin ner's mind. Since our entrance into the World's War the knowledge of the Vital importance of food pro duction has led me to put these chapters into book form for children older grown. The fact that flowers occupy some of the space may help to cheer us as we work at the big task of increasing the world's food supply. The wonderful work the Boy Scouts of America are doing to help increase this supply, has, more than any other cause, led me to rewrite these chap ters. Under the' wonderful leadership of my life partner, the Chief Grub Scout, I am sure they will achieve yet greater results. Nowadays everybody with a garden larger than a tablecloth rushes into print concerning it, and expects us to follow through the whole procession of the seasons on that particular and precious plot. We are confronted with each plant, grass-blade, and worm-cast we have the usual quotations from the poets; the usual round of successes during some little passing outburst of climate; the customary failures under our normal conditions of weather. And now I am going to do it all over again; because to remain silent, if you have a garden, is to be noto fious. That we may escape charges of eccentricity, therefore, we should all write garden books. In my case the time has come; the task can be evaded no more. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Garden in Summer The garden gave me a curious effect of the over lapping Of Spring and Summer this season in an unusually early offering of Sweet Peas, from plants raised in pots and planted out betimes, while I was still able to gather a good bunch of Daffodils, and for over a fortnight I had these unusual companions side by side on a flower table. Of course the first Sweet Peas are generally the best; on the other hand these last Daffodils were the worst Of the season, but were Of great interest to me, for they represented an experiment I had undertaken to find out what is the best way to treat bulbs from New Zea land, and how soon they can be acclimatised to our seasons and fit for the Show table. For why should we everlastingly apply to Flora for everything that is beautiful in the embellishment of our gardens Fruit-trees have flowers as well, and thus they Offer us a double supply of beauty; being beautiful when in flower and beautiful when in fruit - pleasing to the eye and to the taste, and ornamental as well as useful - doubly gratifying and doubly enjoyable. Plants with bright seed-vessels are always in demand for their ornamental qualities; but, after all, these only please the eye, instead of furnishing, like the fruit-trees, entertainment for man and beast. Red-cheeked apples, it is argued, are quite as decorative as red-berried shrubs; and the bird's-eye cherry is scarcely more desirable when in flower than any other cherry, while the ripe fruit, preserves, etc., of the ordinary kind will cause the empty blossoms to go up at full sail. Book excerpt: Can you really have a productive garden without plowing, hoeing, weeding, cultivating, and all the other bothersome rituals that most gardeners suffer through every growing season? "Sure," says Ruth Stout, a prolific author and writer at 80 years young. The reason that Ruth can throw away her spade and hoe and do her gardening from a couch is a year-round mulch covering, 6 to 8 inches thick, that covers her garden like a blanket. Thousands of curious gardeners have visited her Redding, Connecticut garden, including university scientists and horticulture experts. The experts have been dazzled by the technique used by the queen of mulch! But the results of 41 years of gardening experience can't be denied. The Ruth Stout No-Work Gardening Book gives Ruth's unique advice on growing techniques and tells how she has escaped the bugaboos that haunt most gardeners. Her poison-free method of combating slugs and other insects, her scheme for growing tasty vegetables all year, her method of foiling both drought and frost -- these and many other growing secrets are revealed -- secrets that have brought this perky organic gardener season after season of growing pleasure. If you're tired of being a slave to your garden, yet still want to enjoy it without the bother of sprays, weeding, hoeing or other toilsome garden chores, The Ruth Stout No-Work Garden Books has the information you need. It's completely tested gardening method, perfected during more than 40 years experience and reported in the pages of Organic Gardening magazine, eliminates gardening strain and toil, and does it organically with no dangerous chemical fertilizers or toxic sprays. Take it easy. Put nature to work in your garden.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of our finest writers on one of her greatest loves. Jamaica Kincaid's first garden in Vermont was a plot in the middle of her front lawn. There, to the consternation of more experienced friends, she planted only seeds of the flowers she liked best. In My Garden (Book) she gathers all she loves about gardening and plants, and examines it generously, passionately, and with sharp, idiosyncratic discrimination. Kincaid's affections are matched in intensity only by her dislikes. She loves spring and summer but cannot bring herself to love winter, for it hides the garden. She adores the rhododendron Jane Grant, and appreciates ordinary Blue Lake string beans, but abhors the Asiatic lily. The sources of her inspiration -- seed catalogues, the gardener Gertrude Jekyll, gardens like Monet's at Giverny -- are subjected to intense scrutiny. She also examines the idea of the garden on Antigua, where she grew up. My Garden (Book) is an intimate, playful, and penetrating book on gardens, the plants that fill them, and the persons who tend them.

The reading was mostly of the greater gardens, the appearance of which more often reflected the personal taste of the designer or the gardener than the garden-love of the owner. Indeed, the very sight of some gardens was irritating, because of their expensive elaboration. In one notable instance, the great formal garden I repeatedly visited contained no suggestion of its owner, and I came to think of it in the name of the soft-voiced Scotchman who kept it growing and glowing. In another garden, of which I kept for some time a photographic record, the owner was unsympathetic, unrelated; he was doing a garden as part of his spending job as a rich man. But one garden that I saw told another story. It had been started lovingly more than a generation before by a fine-spirited clergyman. With his own hands he planted in it, and his daughter, who lived in it when I visited it, was adding her ideals to those of her father in that yet growing garden. This seemed altogether worth while.
