Book excerpt: My sister and I are the only survivors of the black heirs of the Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson. Katie, my sister Lucille, my brother Jimmy and myself were all gifted by the quirky, off-kilter spirit of the famous general. Each of us inherited his burning ambition, his religiosity, his foolhardiness, and his brazen sexuality. I went ape with the sexuality. For me, the specter of Jackson always hovered in the background. From the roaring twenties to the here and now, it has been a difficult but exciting journey for Katie and me. Sadly, it is time for the flip side. There will be a quiet ride to a quieter cemetery, hopefully with a view. Place a lemon on my gravestone and like "Stonewall" Jackson in battle, my soul will have a tangy fruit to chew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to a young black boy in Depression stricken North Carolina when he learns he is the direct descendant of a Confederate legend? Follow David Jonathan Sawyer on a fabulous journey down the Rose Hill Road, past sunny fields white with cotton, into his favorite swamp, where he learns his family's dark and tragic secret. A boy who would rather play with June bugs and get into mischief must confront the terrifying past ¿ and the ominous present, where segregation is enforced by the same Klansmen who would dig his father a well, or sell him a cow. To venture from the swamp with his burden is to see the world in a different light. Each challenge, insult, or danger adds to his strength and wisdom until, like his famous ancestor, he can prevail against impossible odds. Along the way he finds a simple truth: that all men should be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. A witty, warm, and wonderful book.

Young David looks on in awe as the spirit of Stonewall Jackson takes control. Is there anything that he can do to stop the sometimes vindictive spirit of his ancestor? Or, does he glory in the knowledge that he is gifted with the same cunning and daring as the renowned hero of the old South? Find out what happens when he learns the truth.

Book excerpt: Over the past 120 years scores of books have been written about Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. No books, however, have been written about his widow, Mary Anna, who lived another fifty years following her husband's death, and who was recognized by five U.S. presidents. This book also details the life of Julia, who was but six months old when her father died, and was followed almost daily by newspaper reporters who sought to learn as much as possible about the daughter of the famed Stonewall Jackson. It further expounds on the lives of Julia's son and daughter, the only grandchildren of Stonewall Jackson. The book further covers the life of Col. Thomas J.J. Christian, Jr., Stonewall's great-grandson, who not only possessed many of the same attributes of his famous ancestor, but whose life was tragically cut short during World War II, leaving a widow and six month old daughter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians' attempts to understand legendary Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson have proved uneven at best and often contentious. An occasionally enigmatic and eccentric college professor before the Civil War, Jackson died midway through the conflict, leaving behind no memoirs and relatively few surviving letters or documents. In Inventing Stonewall Jackson, Wallace Hettle offers an innovative and distinctive approach to interpreting Stonewall by examining the lives and agendas of those authors who shape our current understanding of General Jackson. Newspaper reporters, friends, relatives, and fellow soldiers first wrote about Jackson immediately following the Civil War. Most of them, according to Hettle, used portions of their own life stories to frame that of the mythic general. Hettle argues that the legend of Jackson's rise from poverty to power was likely inspired by the rags-to-riches history of his first biographer, Robert Lewis Dabney. Dabney's own successes and Presbyterian beliefs probably shaped his account of Jackson's life as much as any factual research. Many other authors inserted personal values into their stories of Stonewall, perplexing generations of historians and writers. Subsequent biographers contributed their own layers to Jackson's myth and eventually a composite history of the general came to exist in the popular imagination. Later writers, such as the liberal suffragist Mary Johnston, who wrote a novel about Jackson, and the literary critic Allen Tate, who penned a laudatory biography, further shaped Stonewall's myth. As recently as 2003, the film Gods and Generals, which featured Jackson as the key protagonist, affirmed the longevity and power of his image. Impeccable research and nuanced analysis enable Hettle to use American culture and memory to reframe the Stonewall Jackson narrative and provide new ways to understand the long and contended legacy of one of the Civil War's most popular Confederate heroes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Campaigns: Of Lieut.-Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, (Stonewall Jackson;) The cause for which General Jackson fought and died, has been overthrown. But it is believed that this fact has not diminished the affectionate reverence for his memory, and interest in his exploits, felt by those who labored with him in that cause. On the contrary, they regard the events which have occurred since his lamented death, as farther evidences of his genius and prowess. Although he who undertakes to write the history of an acknowledged failure usually has a hopeless and discouraging topic, yet the lustre of Jackson's exploits and character is too bright to be dimmed, even by disaster: and his is universally admitted, by his friends and foes, to be a name so spotless that it shines independent of the cause with which he was connected. My chief motive for supplying this customary exordium to my book, is the wish to answer the natural question in the reader's mind, what right I suppose myself to have, to claim qualification for the task I have assumed. My answer is, that it has been entrusted to me by the widow and family of General Jackson, supported by the urgency of his successor in command, Lieutenant-General Ewell, of his venerable pastor, and of many other friends, in, and out of the army. One advantage for my work, I may claim, which brings far more of responsibility than of credit to me, in the possession of the fullest collection of materials. The correspondence of General Jackson with his family, his pastor, and his most prominent friends in public life, has been in my hands, together with copies of all the important official papers on file in the "War Department of the late Confederate Government.
