Book excerpt: Welcome to the twisted world of anagrams ... What's in a name, like Jeremy Clarkson ( Only Cars Jerk Me) or Gordon Ramsay ( My Gonads Roar)? A few vowels and some consonants - or a whole new identity just waiting to burst free? In My Gonads Roar, expert wordsmith Richard Napier rearranges hundreds of famous names to create a parallel universe - like the world we know, but funnier, ruder, and much more vitriolic.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of P.S., I Love You, a fiercely feminist story collection that illuminates, sometimes in fantastical ways, how women of all kinds navigate the world today—now an Apple TV+ series from the creators of GLOW starring Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever, and Alison Brie! In this singular and imaginative story collection, Cecelia Ahern explores the endless ways in which women blaze through adversity with wit, resourcefulness, and compassion. Ahern takes the familiar aspects of women's lives—the routines, the embarrassments, the desires—and elevates these moments to the outlandish and hilarious with her astute blend of magical realism and social insight. One woman is tortured by sinister bite marks that appear on her skin; another is swallowed up by the floor during a mortifying presentation; yet another resolves to return and exchange her boring husband at the store where she originally acquired him. The women at the center of this curious universe learn that their reality is shaped not only by how others perceive them, but also how they perceive the power within themselves. By turns sly, whimsical, and affecting, these thirty short stories are a dynamic examination of what it means to be a woman in this very moment. Like women themselves, each story can stand alone; yet together, they have a combined power to shift consciousness, inspire others, and create a multi-voiced Roar that will not be ignored. Includes a Reading Group Guide.

Book excerpt: A powerful story of sexual awakening during the Second World War, My Queer War, from the noted memoirist and critic James Lord tells the story of a young man's exposure to the terrors, dislocations, and horrors of armed conflict. In 1942, a timid, inexperienced twenty-one-year-old Lord reports to Atlantic City, New Jersey, to enlist in the U.S. Army. His career in the armed forces takes him to Nevada, California, Boston, England, and, eventually, France and Germany, where he witnesses firsthand the ravages of total war on Europe's land and on its people. Along the way he comes to terms with his own sexuality, experiences the thrill of first love and the chill of disillusionment with his fellow man, and in a moment of great rashness makes the acquaintance of the world's most renowned artist, who will show him the way to a new life. My Queer War is a rich and moving record of one man's maturation in the crucible of the greatest war the world has known. If his war is queer, it is because each man's experience is strange in its own way. His is a story of universal significance and appeal, told by a wry and eloquent observer of the world and of himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do (im)migrant writers negotiate their representation of a multilingual world for a monolingual audience? Does their English betray the presence of another language, is that other language erased, or does it appear here and there, on special occasions for special reasons? Do words and meanings wander from one language and one self to another? Do the psychic and cultural worlds of different languages split apart or merge? What is the aesthetic effect of such wandering, splitting, or merging? Usually described as “code-switches” by linguists, fragments of other languages have wandered into American literature in English from the beginning. Wanderwords asks what, in the memoirs, poems, essays, and fiction of a variety of twentieth and twenty first century writers, the function and meaning of such language migration might be. It shows what there is to be gained if we learn to read migrant writing with an eye, and an ear, for linguistic difference and it concludes that, freighted with the other-cultural meanings wrapped up in their different looks and sounds, wanderwords can perform wonders of poetic signification as well as cultural critique. Bringing together literary and cultural theory with linguistics as well as the theory and history of migration, and with psychoanalysis for its understanding of the multilingual unconscious, Wanderwords engages closely with the work of well-known and unheard-of writers such as Mary Antin and Eva Hoffman, Richard Rodriguez and Junot Díaz, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Bharati Mukherjee, Edward Bok and Truus van Bruinessen, Susana Chávez-Silverman and Gustavo Perez-Firmat, Pietro DiDonato and Don DeLillo. In so doing, a poetics of multilingualism unfolds that stretches well beyond translation into the lingual contact zone of English-with-other-languages that is American literature, belatedly re-connecting with the world.

Book excerpt: When a nurse asked John if he could have one wish, he had just watched TV news depicting ISIS beheading Christians, so he answered, "Bring me back as an infantry platoon leader to go fight ISIS." He wakes up parachuting into Syria in combat gear but quickly learns he forgot to say "male infantry platoon leader" now that the president has opened combat positions to women. In the ensuing battle, she is wounded but is recommended for the Medal of Honor. Upon being discharged from Walter Reed, the president orders her to remain in DC so that he can show her off as proof that he was right in his decision. How does she go to the State of the Union Address when she doesn't know how to put on makeup or pantyhose? But, after some comic misadventures, she figures it out. But then, she must go to a White House dinner in honor of Prime Minister Netanyahu. She is assigned Major Michael David as her escort as she hardly has a significant other. Strange things happen when she is with him that makes her wonder whether he is the Archangel Michael, which he denies. The Army wants to reclassify unfit for combat, so she accepts the prime minister's offer to make her an Israeli soldier. During a combat jump with the IDF, her chute doesn't open but two arms enfold her and lower her to the ground. Major Michael was along as an observer. She's convinced he unfolded his wings to save her, but he says he had a maneuverable parachute that let him catch her. Although unconvinced, it is the least of her problems. He proposes to her. Can she marry a man when something is left of the male brain in her? Much less marry an archangel?
