Book excerpt: I have always been haunted by the notion of hatred which not only looks unjustifiable in my view, but also encourages people to commit murder, a crime which has mostly been preceded by hatred and incitement. I have never believed in the saying without hatred, humanity would not have known love or passion. This saying proved to be futile in reality. To prove this, all monotheistic religions came to promote tolerance and spread love among human beings. Personally I still tend to believe that man is born to love, however, over time people have been taught to hate. Up to this moment my belief has never changed that love is the core of humanity, while hatred is an acquired value. In some cases, though, hatred might be justified; the fear instinct, for instance, may drive one to hate the source of that fear. You may like a lion when it is inside the cage. However, once that cage is open the lion becomes a threat to your life. But for a human being to hate another human being or even an animal for no reason other than what has been said in some old books is, from my point of view, a misfortune. Some hatred is based on unfounded narrations which could be no more than witchcraft. However, the world still lives with the results of that terrifying growing hatred; Entire peoples hate each other without even examining the real reasons behind that hatred. In our Arab region where nations of many origins co-exist, we tend to get rid of what we hate forever, be it human being or animal which could cause civilization disruption and psychological shock. I found out that the raven could be used to symbolize this idea. Not only is this bird so peaceful but also friend to peasants and environment. It has good social behaviors and embraces collaboration and team spirit. It learns from its own mistakes through error & trail, and has high IQ. Furthermore, it was mentioned in monotheist books as the bird which taught human beings how to bury their dead (the story of Abel and Cain). Despite all this, the raven is hated more than any other bird by Arabs and Muslims and some peoples of the East. It is, for many, the source of evil omen. The ravens voice is considered one of the roughest sounds on earth. What is even more catastrophic is that some consider the raven as an epidemic that must be eradicated by killing. This book does not literally defend the raven as a bird; it goes deep in hatred, a notion which increasingly controls people's stances and behaviors regardless of their origin, color or tongues.

For the last hundred years, the Ravenwood women have used their gift of dreaming for hire to gather information or to assassinate. As she discovers her family's dark secret, Selene is torn between upholding her family's legacy--a legacy that supports her people--or seeking the true reason behind her family's gift. Her dilemma comes to a head when she is tasked with assassinating the one man who can bring peace to the nations, but who will also bring about the downfall of her own house. One path holds glory and power, and will solidify her position as Lady of Ravenwood. The other path holds shame and execution. Which will she choose? And is she willing to pay the price for the path chosen?

Book excerpt: A matchless warrior is pitted against a near-God in the second epic installment of the Raven’s Blade series. It has long been our lot in life, brother, to do what others can’t. Vaelin Al Sorna was known across the realm as the greatest of warriors, but he thought battles were behind him. He was wrong. Prophecy and rumor led him across the sea to find a woman he once loved, and drew him into a war waged by the Darkblade, a man who believes himself a god—and one who has gathered a fanatical army that threatens all of the known world. After a costly defeat by the Darkblade, Vaelin’s forces are shattered, while the self-proclaimed immortal and his army continue their terrible march. But during the clash, Vaelin regained some of the dark magic that once gave him unrivaled skill in battle. And though the fight he has been drawn into seems near unwinnable, the song that drives him now desires the blood of his enemy above all else…

Book excerpt: Fiction. Sy Kirschbaum has spent almost twenty years in Prague translating legendary Czech dissident Jan Horak's samizdat masterpiece, Blue, Red, Gray. On the cusp of finishing, he is called back to his Maine hometown to see his troubled former lover, Ida Fields, now the wife of their childhood friend Gabe Slatky. But before he can see her, Sy must meet with Gabe for an evening at a local bar, an encounter that becomes a test of their old friendship and their dueling accounts of reality. In the conversation that follows, narratives of past and present--of art and life--interweave with perfect inevitability, yet with unpredictable, even shocking consequences, spiraling Sy and Gabe into confusion, doubt, and despair, without quite eroding, perhaps, the possibility of hope. FIRST, THE RAVEN: A PREFACE is a quietly yet profoundly radical work, as ingenious as a print by Escher or a Möbius strip: the Reader must glide along its whole immaculately ramified length before realizing how deeply life, despite its unceasing, nearly flawless appearance of normalcy, is upside down.

Book excerpt: Heinrich involves us in his quest to get inside the mind of the raven. But as animals can only be spied on by getting quite close, Heinrich adopts ravens, thereby becoming a "raven father," as well as observing them in their natural habitat. He studies their daily routines, and in the process, paints a vivid picture of the ravens' world. At the heart of this book are Heinrich's love and respect for these complex and engaging creatures, and through his keen observation and analysis, we become their intimates too. Heinrich's passion for ravens has led him around the world in his research. Mind of the Raven follows an exotic journey—from New England to Germany, and from Montana to Baffin Island in the high Arctic—offering dazzling accounts of how science works in the field, filtered through the eyes of a passionate observer of nature. Each new discovery and insight into raven behavior is thrilling to read, at once lyrical and scientific.

Upon returning to the Uffizi, no one recognizes her. More disturbingly, she discovers that she’s been absent an entire week. With no recollection of her disappearance, Raven learns that her absence coincides with one of the largest robberies in Uffizi history - the theft of a set of priceless Botticelli illustrations. Book excerpt: Noted scientist and kayak adventurer undertakes a journey of spiritual healing Jon Turk has kayaked around Cape Horn and paddled across the Pacific Ocean to retrace the voyages of ancient people. But, the strangest trip he ever took was the journey he made as a man of science into the realm of the spiritual. In a remote Siberian village, Turk met an elderly Koryak shaman named Moolynaut who invoked the help of a Spirit Raven to mend his fractured pelvis. When the healing was complete, he was able to walk without pain. Turk, finding no rational explanation, sought understanding by traversing the frozen tundra where Moolynaut was born, camping with bands of reindeer herders, and recording stories of their lives and spirituality. Framed by high adventure across the vast and forbidding Siberian landscape, The Raven’s Gift creates a vision of natural and spiritual realms interwoven by one man’s awakening.

Book excerpt: DCI David Brock and DI Kathy Kolla, of Scotland Yard, find themselves pulled into a case of murder, a mysterious death among the houseboats that line the canals around greater London, in Barry Maitland's The Raven's Eye. DI Kathy Kolla of Scotland Yard is called in as a matter of course by the local Paddington police when a woman turns up dead in what appears to be an accident. On her houseboat, Vicky Hawks is found by one of her neighbors having apparently succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning due to improper ventilation of the narrowboat's heating system. But while the cause of death seems apparent and there's no reason for Kolla to think otherwise, something about this death still bothers her. Meanwhile, her boss, DCI Brock, is wrestling with harsh budget cuts and a new Commander who is determined to make fundamental changes to the system—including limiting resources devoted to investigations. Struggling against the limitations imposed by the new order at Scotland Yard, Brock and Kolla find themselves pulling at the loose strings in the death of Vicky Hawks, trying to find out who she really was, what she was up to, and how her death might be related to another earlier tragic accidental death.
