Book Synopsis MEMOIR: DYNAMITE, CHECK SIX by : Ray Jones
Download or read book MEMOIR: DYNAMITE, CHECK SIX written by Ray Jones and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book isn't primarily about relationships. There's no romance involved--not even any close friendships. It's mostly about flying machines and their missions. But people are important. After all, pilots fly the machines. There are a lot of characters here that aviation buffs will immediately recognize: Lots of record-setting test pilots, and even some astronauts. Older non-buffs will also see familiar names: an aviation legend, first-ever moon walkers, a couple of popular entertainers, a famous TV-news anchor and even two former presidential candidates. Watch closely, some of them just flash past. Airplanes star in this tale. None of them were perfect, but many of them excelled performing their assigned tasks. North American Aircraft's F-86F was a beautiful machine. But it was also a breathtakingly-good MiG killer. Because of its fine flying qualities, it was fun to fly--a sports car among sedans. Fairchild/Chase Aircraft's C-123B was an outstanding assault transport. It was almost perfect for its mission in Vietnam, but it could be a real handful for any pilot to fly. I have lots of "favorite" airplanes, but Douglas' A-1H Skyraider stands out. There has never been a better attack fighter in terms of accuracy in iron-bomb delivery, weapons load-carrying ability or endurance. Lockheed's F-104A or C models were many pilot's dream machines. Their luster dimmed somewhat for me after I flew them. But they were certainly suitable for training Test Pilot School students to perform zooms and shuttle-aircraft type approaches and landings. I'll stop with these four. There's much more on airplanes inside--about 192,000 words worth. That's a lot to slog through and you may find some parts too technical or too detailed. Ignore them. There are also many numbers, but most aren't important. Browse for good stuff. If you want more info on some airplane, Google her up.
Book Synopsis Doing Academic Careers Differently by : Sarah Robinson
Download or read book Doing Academic Careers Differently written by Sarah Robinson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should academic careers always unfold in exactly the same way? Is there one best way of being an academic? This book says no. Assumptions about who academics are and what they should do are becoming increasingly narrow and focused on achieving so-called ‘excellence’ in teaching and research above anything else. This book problematises this and explores the scope for doing academic careers differently. Authors paint individual or group portraits of their academic careers, working with metaphors which challenge the dominant discourses of how academic careers should be led. From rejecting the pressure to focus on ‘one big thing’, to prioritising nurture and care, transcending disciplinary boundaries, reshaping own daily practice, connecting with communities, and being academics outside academia, the chapters in this book offer those considering, starting, or developing an academic career a treasure trove of many alternative possibilities. Presented as a portrait gallery through which readers are encouraged to meander at will, this compilation of insights into alternative academic lives will help to inspire and encourage current academics to re-think and take ownership of their careers in their own terms, according to their own strengths, weaknesses, and circumstances.

Terry McGlynn’s straightforward, no-nonsense approach avoids off-putting pedagogical jargon and enables instructors to become true ambassadors for science. For years, McGlynn has been addressing the need for practical and accessible advice for college science teachers through his popular blog Small Pond Science. Now he has gathered this advice as an easy read—one that can be ingested and put to use on short deadline. Readers will learn about topics ranging from creating a syllabus and developing grading rubrics to mastering online teaching and ensuring safety during lab and fieldwork. Book excerpt: It’s the year 2000, and twenty-four-year-old Kate moves into a new apartment to find a new state of independence in a new millennium. Almost immediately, she starts crushing on a hot guy who lives in her building. Deciding to take a break from her boyfriend Dexter, Kate believes the only thing now separating her from the fresh object of her sexual fantasies is the thin wall between their neighboring apartments. A former 1920s hotel, Camden Court has housed many lonely lives over the decades—and is where a number of them have come to die. They're not all resting in peace, however, including ninety-year-old Olive, who dropped dead in Kate’s apartment and continues to make her presence known. For Olive has a secret she’s dying to tell. One linking her to the sex, scandal, and sacrifice of a young dreamer named Lon. As the past haunts the present, Kate’s romantic notion that the thrill-of-the-chase beats the reality-after-the-catch unexpectedly entwines her modern-day love life with Lon’s Jazz Age tragedy. With a little supernatural and a lotta' razzle-dazzle, Seven for a Secret is where historical fiction meets contemporary rom-com—from the Roaring Twenties when the “New Woman” was born, to the modern Noughties when she really came of age.

Book excerpt: Yu Hua’s beautiful, heartbreaking novel Cries in the Drizzle follows a young Chinese boy throughout his childhood and adolescence during the reign of Chairman Mao. The middle son of three, Sun Guanglin is constantly neglected ignored by his parents and his younger and older brother. Sent away at age six to live with another family, he returns to his parents’ house six years later on the same night that their home burns to the ground, making him even more a black sheep. Yet Sun Guanglin’s status as an outcast, both at home and in his village, places him in a unique position to observe the changing nature of Chinese society, as social dynamics — and his very own family — are changed forever under Communist rule. With its moving, thoughtful prose, Cries in the Drizzle is a stunning addition to the wide-ranging work of one of China’s most distinguished contemporary writers.

Book Synopsis Island Splashes by : Crystal G. Reece
Download or read book Island Splashes written by Crystal G. Reece and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is important is the circles of influence that have helped me to become who I am today. God has used each splash to divinely order every step to ripple through every part of my life, ministry, and story. I pray to continually make splashes with those impacts from here to the uttermost parts of the earth, by living out each lesson learned. Never forget that regardless of the size of the splash, each one of them continues to ripple across the ocean of life. - Crystal Reece, Author "Her story is our story. It's the life of contrasts the writer of Ecclesiastes told us about. Sadness and joy, tears and victory, grief and dancing, crawling and flying ... it's all there. But, unlike so many, the fragile segments of Crystal's life are held together by the God-thread of unwavering trust. It is this very thread that reaches out and weaves you into the amazing tale of a life of selfless devotion to the God of the universe. More than a memoir, this is a story that can become yours if you let it." - Melani Shock, Pentecostals of Alexandria, and author of Eat This Book "If you expect this book to be about a young woman's call to do missions work, it is. Do you perceive it to be about prayer? You are correct. Do you view this as a how-to book on finding God's will and experiencing His provision? Right again; it's all this and more! This book illustrates how God strategically places influencers in our lives to 'splash' us, as Crystal so ably states, causing ripple effects. As you read, may your heart be stirred, causing you to splash others with the all-encompassing love of Jesus Christ!" - David and Kathy Brott, missionary envoys; Global Missions UPCI
