Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether we’re aware of it or not, we spend much of our time in this globalised world in the act of translation. Language is a big part of it, of course, as anyone who has fumbled with a phrasebook in a foreign country will know, but behind language is something far more challenging to translate: culture. As a traveller, a mistranslation might land you a bowl of who-knows-what when you think you asked for noodles, and mistranslations in international politics can be a few steps from serious trouble. But translation is also a way of entering new and exciting worlds, and forging links that never before existed. Linda Jaivin has been translating from Chinese for more than thirty years. While her specialty is subtitles, she has also translated song lyrics, poetry and fiction, and interpreted for ABC film crews, Chinese artists and even the English singer Billy Bragg as he gave his take on socialism to some Beijing rockers. In Found in Translation she reveals the work of the translator and considers whether different worldviews can be bridged. She pays special attention to China and the English-speaking West, Australia in particular, but also discusses French, Japanese and even the odd phrase of Maori. This is a free-ranging essay, personal and informed, about translation in its narrowest and broadest senses, and the prism – occasionally prison – of culture. “About six years ago, President George W. Bush was delivering a speech at a G8 summit, when, made impatient by the process of translation, he interrupted his German interpreter: ‘Everybody speaks English, right?’ ...” —Linda Jaivin, Found in Translation

Book excerpt: Document from the year 2016 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Chinese / China, , language: English, abstract: Chinese Made Easy was a project inspired by the ‘Three Language Flavour Project’ of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria. The central aim of the project is to make Chinese easy for non-native speakers of the language and most especially to bring the language to them in their local language. This work translates Chinese into English and then into Yoruba, it's the first of its kind in the history of Nigeria and Africa as a whole. For language to be easily disseminated it has to be absorbed in a form in which the learner can interpret and understand the contents of the language. This principle guided the development of the contents of this work. While this work is useful for those who are keen on the Chinese language, this work also bridges the gap for Chinese citizens who seek to understand and have knowledge of the Yoruba language. It is a piece of works that would help younger learners and adults learn the Chinese language with ease.

Book excerpt: In this latest book by the award-winning author of the hugely influential Male Daughters, Female Husbands, Ifi Amadiume propels gender relations beyond dichotomies and discriminations, and towards a power-sharing argument in discourse, contestation and resistance. Representing the culmination of over 40 years of ground-breaking work on notions of matriarchy at the intersection of the Igbo-African universe and the Western capitalist reality, Amadiume sets forth a blueprint for a bold new matriarchitarianism, critiquing all forms of social injustice with a shared matriarchal-relational humanism. In each chapter of the book, Amadiume applies these principles to a dazzling array of subjects: from religious leadership, kinship and family relations, to sexuality, creative writing and matters of conscience in race, class and gender. African Possibilities explodes our notions of matriarchy into original and compelling arguments, and offers a radical alternative approach to the world's entrenched injustices.

Modern western attitudes towards the imperial past tend either towards nostalgia for British power or revulsion at what seem to be the abuses of that power. The Cambridge Illustrated History of the British Empire adopts neither of these approaches. It aims to create historical understanding about the British empire on the assumption that such understanding is important for any informed appreciation of the modern world. Through striking illustration and a text written by leading experts, this book examines the experience of colonialism in North America, India, Africa, Australia, and the Caribbean, as well as the impact of the empire on Britain itself. Emphasis is placed on social and cultural history, including slavery, trade, religion, art, and the movement of ideas. How did the British rule their empire? Who benefited economically from the empire? And who lost?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary is the fruit of a five-year research work on the meaning of Igbo names, an indispensable resource material for all those who are interested in the culture of the Igbo ethnic group in general, and the cultural dimensions of Igbo names, in particular. Spoken by about 30 million people in southeastern Nigeria, Igbo is the mother tongue of diverse people groups who have their homeland in a block of territory delimited to north by the Edo-Igala-Idoma ethnic groups, Urhobo to the west, the Bights of Benin and Biafra to the south and the Ibibio-Anang to the south. These groups who live in the area so delimited are referred to as Igbo and use the Igbo language to communicate their experience of being-in-the-world as well as their overall worldview. Igbo names are not mere biometric elements or identification labels tagged onto the individual to distinguish them from others; they reflect socio-cultural, philosophical and religious beliefs. They are an expression of long-held societal ethos and often communicate personal life-journeys and life-time family experiences, or even those of the clan. Also, names could reflect parents' aspirations for their children. In other words, names have important meanings and often encapsulate the epistemology and life experiences of their bearers. Suffice it to say that Igbo names are the most important part of a person's identity. It is this wealth of cultural information that this dictionary places at disposal of its user's . The book is divided into two parts for boys' names and girls' names respectively; and each name has not just an English translation, but also a cultural comment as to its inspiration, as well as a pronunciation guide. These two parts are preceded by the technical and theoretical study of Igbo linguistics, phonetics and phonology presented in the introduction. This section is aimed at eliminating the difficulty non-Igbo speakers encounter in pronouncing Igbo words/names. The work is completed by a rich bibliography for further cultural exploration.
