Its gradual extermination is chronicled by E. Douglas Branch, who drew on rich materials, including Indian legends, old letters and diaries, and tales of frontier travelers. No one has ever written more memorably about the great herds, their habits and haunts, their importance to the Indians, their discovery by awed whites, their decimation by huge cultural and economic forces.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men I Have Fished: Sketches of Characters and Incidents With Rod and Gun, From Childhood to Manhood; From the Killing of Little Fishes and Birds to a Buffalo Hunt These sketches originally appeared in the Forest and Stream. Read between the lines, and at times in them, will be found the wanderings of a boy who had no further object in view than to be in the woods and on the waters, and who had no taste for anything like the harness of civilization. During the years of vagabondizing many things occurred which at the time seemed to deserve little notice, but subsequently grew into pleasant memories; and I began to write them up, naturally expecting that my immediate relatives and personal friends would read them with some interest. I was surprised and gratified to find how many strangers said pleasant things of them, and to know that there was a demand for them in book form. The present volume comprises the twenty-four chapters which appeared between July 11 and Dec. 26, 1896. Other sketches of "Men I Have Fished With" have been printed since, and at this writing, in October, 1897, the series is in progress. I have aimed to make a sketch of the boy or man of whom I wrote, so that the reader, gentle or otherwise, would know him, as I thought I did, and I find myself telling how to bob for eels, camp out and sleep in barns, kill deer with wooden plugs, taking my first trout on a worm, hunting turtles with Colonel Raymond in boyhood and reviewing his famous setters in after years, shooting turkeys, spearing eels through ice, and many other things too numerous to mention, up to the time when I was glad to get back home. Book excerpt: How far will states and communities go to attract mega-projects that offer thousands of good jobs and tens of millions in tax revenue? Ezra Drake finds out when he's recruited to help Alabama lure a giant pharmaceutical plant to the state. Years ago, Ezra left Alabama for the Ivy League and then Germany. He's now a fast-riser at Silverman Bach in New York. A turn of events puts him back in Alabama as part of an elite team that lures mega-projects to energize the economy. Mercedes-Benz, Airbus, and other mega-projects had transformed the state. Alabama wants more. Call it "buffalo hunting" or "smokestack chasing," Ezra's team understands it's all about recruiting companies and talent to successfully compete in the modern economy. Instead of firearms, Ezra's team hunts with big data and persuasion. Competing against other cities and states is tough, but Ezra finds it even tougher battling forces that want to keep Alabama as it is and was, and not what it might become. Will Ezra and Alabama succeed in winning the pharma mega-project? Will Ezra find success, peace, and happiness in Alabama?

Book excerpt: From the host of the Travel Channel’s “The Wild Within.” A hunt for the American buffalo—an adventurous, fascinating examination of an animal that has haunted the American imagination. In 2005, Steven Rinella won a lottery permit to hunt for a wild buffalo, or American bison, in the Alaskan wilderness. Despite the odds—there’s only a 2 percent chance of drawing the permit, and fewer than 20 percent of those hunters are successful—Rinella managed to kill a buffalo on a snow-covered mountainside and then raft the meat back to civilization while being trailed by grizzly bears and suffering from hypothermia. Throughout these adventures, Rinella found himself contemplating his own place among the 14,000 years’ worth of buffalo hunters in North America, as well as the buffalo’s place in the American experience. At the time of the Revolutionary War, North America was home to approximately 40 million buffalo, the largest herd of big mammals on the planet, but by the mid-1890s only a few hundred remained. Now that the buffalo is on the verge of a dramatic ecological recovery across the West, Americans are faced with the challenge of how, and if, we can dare to share our land with a beast that is the embodiment of the American wilderness. American Buffalo is a narrative tale of Rinella’s hunt. But beyond that, it is the story of the many ways in which the buffalo has shaped our national identity. Rinella takes us across the continent in search of the buffalo’s past, present, and future: to the Bering Land Bridge, where scientists search for buffalo bones amid artifacts of the New World’s earliest human inhabitants; to buffalo jumps where Native Americans once ran buffalo over cliffs by the thousands; to the Detroit Carbon works, a “bone charcoal” plant that made fortunes in the late 1800s by turning millions of tons of buffalo bones into bone meal, black dye, and fine china; and even to an abattoir turned fashion mecca in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, where a depressed buffalo named Black Diamond met his fate after serving as the model for the American nickel. Rinella’s erudition and exuberance, combined with his gift for storytelling, make him the perfect guide for a book that combines outdoor adventure with a quirky blend of facts and observations about history, biology, and the natural world. Both a captivating narrative and a book of environmental and historical significance, American Buffalo tells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.

There are three great travelers whom the Editor of this Magazine knows well, and whom at various times he has specially introduced to its read ers. The scenes of their explorations lie far apart, all of them being in regions heretofore almost unknown. No three men can be found differing more widely in personal appearance. Mr. Charles F. Mr. John Ross Baowun, now Ameri can Minister to China, born in Ireland, but. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Buffalo, 1924 The county had no money for public schools that year, nor the year following, so Prof. Hop wood set out to canvass the community for sub scription students. School opened early in Sep tember, and both of these good souls entered with enthusiasm into the work. During the first quarter they found it necessary to live nearer to the school; hence, they leased a small two-room. Cottage and one acre of ground adjoining the school lot. Later this was bought from S. W. Hyder for for a private home. Its im mediate dooryard is now occupied by the large locust tree in front of Hardin Hall.
